Variation for Health-Enhancing Compounds and Traits in Onion (Allium cepa L.) Germplasm

Consumption of onion has been associated with reduced incidence of chronic diseases. Phenolic, organosulfur and carbohydrate compounds present are largely responsible for these effects. This study examined compositional variation for health-enhancing compounds in a genetically diverse collection of onion cultivars. Total antioxidant activity and aroma profiles were characterized. Significant variation in bulb concentration for total and individual phenolic compounds, thiosulfinates, carbohydrates, and total and soluble solids was found. The range of variation was particularly large (>50-fold difference between the cultivars with the highest and lowest content) for fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and the polyphenols quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate and epicatechin gallate. Amino acid profiles varied significantly as well with substantial variation (~10 fold) observed in both total and essential amino acids. Total antioxidant activity was positively correlated with polyphenols content, and quercetin in particular (r = 0.83), suggesting a major contribution from phenolic compounds to onion antioxidant properties. Significant positive correlation was also found between solids and thiosulfinates content (r = 0.74) and between solids and FOS (r = 0.81), suggesting a dilution/concentration effect for organosulfur compounds and FOS in onion bulbs. The present study revealed broad variation for health-enhancing compounds content in onion germplasm, which can be exploited in breeding programs aiming at increasing onion nutraceutical value.

Activities of liquid Fe-As and Fe-Sb alloys saturated with carbon

A solid iron base alloy of the so-called furnace residue is often formed as a by-product in reduction smelting of lead sinter and scraps with high contents of arsenic and antimony. The use of phase separation into a liquid iron-rich alloy and a liquid lead-rich alloy in lead-iron-arsenic and lead-iron-antimony systems saturated with carbon at relatively low temperatures of about 1200~C was proposed in a new process for treating the fumace residue to recover valuable elements into the lead-rich alloy and fLx toxic arsenic into the iron-rich alloy. As a fundamental study for the proposed process, the activity coefficients and interaction parameters of the Fe-As and Fe-Sb systems saturated with carbon at 1200℃ were derived in this study, based on the determined phase relations in the Fe-Pb-As and Fe-Pb-Sb systems saturated with carbon.

Evaluation on the interface characteristics,thermal conductivity,and annealing effect of a hot-forged Cu-Ti/diamond composite

A Cu-1.5 wt.%Ti/Diamond(55 vol.%)composite was fabricated by hot forging from powder mixture of copper,titanium and diamond powders at 1050?C.A nano-thick TiC interfacial layer was formed between the diamond particle and copper matrix during forging,and it has an orientation relationship of(111)TiC//(002)Cu&[110]TiC//[110]Cuwith the copper *** analysis suggests that TiC is semicoherently bond with copper matrix,which helps reduce phonon scattering at the TiC/Cu interface and facilitates the heat transfer,further leading to the hot-forged copper/diamond composite(referred as to Cu-Ti/Dia-0)has a thermal conductivity of 410 W/m K,and this is about 74%of theoretical thermal conductivity of hot-forged copper/composite(552 W/m K).However,the formation of thin amorphous carbon layer in diamond particle(next to the interfacial TiC layer)and deformed structure in the copper matrix have adverse effect on the thermal conductivity of Cu-Ti/Dia-0 composite.800℃-annealing eliminates the discrepancy in TiC interface morphology between the diamond-{100}and-{111}facets of Cu-Ti/Dia-0 composite,but causes TiC particles coarsening and agglomerating for the Cu-Ti/Dia-2 composite and interfacial layer cracking and spallation for the Cu-Ti/Dia-1 *** addition,a large amount of graphite was formed by titanium-induced diamond graphitization in the Cu-Ti/Dia-2 *** these factors deteriorate the heat transfer behavior for the annealed Cu-Ti/Dia *** heat treatment needs to be continually investigated to improve the thermal conductivity of hot-forged CuTi/Dia composite by eliminating deformed structure in the copper matrix with limit/without impacts on the formed TiC interfacial layer.

Diabetes and inflammatory diseases:An overview from the perspective of Ca^(2+)/3'-5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate signaling

A large amount of evidence has supported a clinical link between diabetes and inflammatory diseases,e.g.,cancer,dementia,and *** addition,it is also suggested that dysregulations related to Ca^(2+)signaling could link these diseases,in addition to 3'-5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)signaling ***,revealing this interplay between diabetes and inflammatory diseases may provide novel insights into the pathogenesis of these *** involving signaling pathways related to Ca^(2+)and cAMP,inflammation,diabetes,dementia,cancer,and hypertension(alone or combined)were collected by searching PubMed and *** signaling pathways,Ca^(2+)and cAMP signaling,control the release of neurotransmitters and hormones,in addition to neurodegeneration,and tumor ***,there is a clear relationship between Ca^(2+)signaling,e.g.,increased Ca^(2+)signals,and inflammatory *** also regulates pro-and anti-inflammatory *** to the experience of our group in this field,this article discusses the role of Ca^(2+)and cAMP signaling in the correlation between diabetes and inflammatory diseases,including its pharmacological *** a novelty,this article also includes:(1)A timeline of the major events in Ca^(2+)/cAMP signaling;and(2)As coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is an emerging and rapidly evolving situation,this article also discusses recent reports on the role of Ca^(2+)channel blockers for preventing Ca^(2+)signaling disruption due to COVID-19,including the correlation between COVID-19 and diabetes.

Validity of continuous-failure-state unloading triaxial tests as a means to estimate the residual strength of rocks

The residual strength of rocks and rock masses is an important parameter to be constrained for analysis and design purposes in many rock engineering applications.A residual strength envelope in principal stress space is typically developed using residual strength data obtained from compression tests on many different specimens of the same rock *** this study,we examined the potential for use of the continuous-failure-state testing concept as a means to constrain the residual strength envelope using a limited number of ***,cylindrical specimens of three rock types(granodiorite,diabase,and Stanstead granite)were unloaded at the residual state such that a full residual strength envelope for each individual specimen was *** a residual strength model that introduces a single new strength parameter(the residual strength index,or RSI),the results of the continuous-failurestate unloading tests were compared to conventionally obtained residual strength ***,the continuous-failure-state residual strength data were found to be consistent with the conventional residual strength ***,it was identified that the primary factor limiting an accurate characterization of the residual strength for a given rock type is not the amount of data for a given specimen,but the variety of specimens available to characterize the inherent variability of the rock unit of ***,the use of continuous-failure-state testing for estimation of the residual strength of a rock unit is only recommended when the number of specimens available for testing is very limited(i.e.<5).

Processing of metastable beta titanium alloy:Comprehensive study on deformation behaviour and exceptional microstructure variation mechanisms

Thermomechanical processing(TMP)is especially crucial for metastableβtitanium alloys,which has received significant attention in the community for a long *** this contribution,the processing-responding behaviour including microstructure evolution process,texture variation mechanism,and un-derlying deformation process of powder metallurgy Ti-5553 alloy in a wide processing parameter range was comprehensively *** physical simulation was performed on the alloy at temper-atures ranging from 800℃ to 1100℃,and strain rates between 0.001 s^(−1) and 10 s^(−1),to varied defor-mation degrees of 20%-80%height *** was found that the processing parameters(***-ature,strain rate,and deformation degree)are influential on the deformation process and resultant *** microstructural evolution processes forβphase including flow localization,dynamic recovery,dynamic recrystallization,and grain coarsening are activated in different processing domains,while different evolution mechanisms forαphase including dynamic precipitation,phase separation,dy-namic coarsening,and mechanical shearing also play their roles under different processing *** particular,four exceptional evolution mechanisms ofαprecipitation which have not been previously reported in titanium alloys were discovered and clearly demonstrated,more specifically,they are multi-interior twinning,internal compositing,layered coarsening and selective diffusion-actuated *** the establishment of comprehensive microstructural evolution mechanism maps,the guidance for precise processing and the knowledge reserve extension for deformation process of metastableβtita-nium alloys can be effectively achieved.

Particle flow code simulation of intact and fissured granitic rock samples

Spatial and temporal patterns of forest fires in the Central Monte:relationships with regional climate

Background Natural and anthropogenic wildfires burn large areas of arid and semi-arid forests with significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. Fire regimes are controlled by climate, vegetation type, and anthropogenic factors such as ignition sources and human-induced disturbances. Projections of climate and land-use change suggest that these controlling factors will change, altering fire regimes in the near future. In the southern Central Monte, Mendoza, Argentina, the factors that modulate the fire temporal and spatial variability are poorly understood. We reconstructed the fire history of southeast of Mendoza from 1984 to 2023 and investigated the relationships between fire extent and climate variability at seasonal and interannual scales. Burned areas were determined using Google Earth Engine by processing Landsat 5-TM, Landsat 7-ETM+, and Landsat 8-OLI-TIRS sensor *** The region exhibited high spatial and temporal variability in fire occurrence, being a mosaic of areas with different fire histories and recovery times. Between 1985 and 2023, fire recurrence ranged from sites unburned to sites with up to 14 fires. The occurrence of large fires was strongly favored by a combination of a year with abundant spring–early summer precipitation, which favors fuel accumulation, followed by a year of low spring–early summer precipitation. Precipitation and burnt area showed a very pronounced 6–7 year cycle, suggesting a dominant climatic control on fire *** Fire distribution in southeastern Mendoza forests is not homogeneous, resulting in a mosaic of patches with different fire histories. This heterogeneity may be related to vegetation patterns and land use. The temporal variability of fires is strongly influenced by climate variability, which would promote fuel production and subsequent drying. Differential diagnosis of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) is of paramount importance for appropriate patient management. Several diagnostic algorithms for discrimination of VT and SVT based on surface electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis have been proposed. Following established diagnosis of VT,a specific origination tachycardia site can be supposed according to QRS complex characteristics. This review aims to cover comprehensive and comparative description of the main VT diagnostic algorithms and to present ECG characteristics which permit to suggest the most common VT origination sites.
