Previous research shows that yawning enhances intracranial circulation and regulates brain temperature. Consistent with these functional outcomes, yawn duration correlates positively with interspecies variation in brain weight across mammals, with robust relationships documented at both the taxonomic rank of class and the more restricted scale of family (e.g., Felidae). This study provides the first investigation into whether differences in brain weight within a single species, domesticated dogs Canis lupus familiaris, can predict intraspecific variation in yawn duration. measures of yawn duration were obtained from public videos available online and then paired with previously published brain and body weight data of different dog breeds. The final sample consisted of 272 yawns from 198 dogs across 23 breeds. Consistent with recent studies, we find robust correlations between yawn duration and brain weight across breeds. moreover, these correlations remain significant after controlling for differences in body weight across breeds. These findings replicate and extend upon past work in this area and provide further support that yawns evolved to serve an important and large-scale neurophysiologic function.

RANDOmIZED POLICY OF A POISSON INPUT QUEUE WITH J VACATIONS

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an m/G/1 queuing system with a randomized control policy and at most J vacations. After all the customers are served in the queue exhaustively, the server immediately takes at most J vacations repeatedly until at least N customers are waiting for service in the queue upon returning from a vacation. If the number of arrivals does not reach N by the end of the jth vacation, the server remains idle in the system until the number of arrivals in the queue reaches N. If the number of customers in the queue is exactly accumulated N since the server remains idle or returns from vacation, the server is activated for services with probability p and deactivated with probability （l-p）. For such variant vacation model, other important system characteristics are derived, such as the expected number of customers, the expected length of the busy and idle period, and etc. Following the construction of the expected cost function per unit time, an efficient and fast procedure is developed for searching the joint optimum thresholds （N＊,J＊） that minimize the cost function. Some numerical examples are also presented.

We introduce the differential polynomial of a graph. The differential polynomial of a graph G of order n is the polynomial B(G; x) :=∑?(G)k=-nB_k(G) x^(n+k), where B_k(G) denotes the number of vertex subsets of G with differential equal to k. We state some properties of B(G;x) and its *** particular, we compute the differential polynomial for complete, empty, path, cycle, wheel and double star graphs. We also establish some relationships between B(G; x) and the differential polynomials of graphs which result by removing, adding, and subdividing an edge from G.

Impact of creatinine methodology on glomerular filtration rate estimation in diabetes

AIm To evaluate the influence of creatinine methodology on the performance of chronic kidney disease(CKD)-Epidemiology Collaboration Group-calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate(CKD-EPI-eGFR) for CKD diagnosis/staging in a large cohort of diabetic patients. mETHODS Fasting blood samples were taken from diabetic patients attending our clinic for their regular annual examination, including laboratory measurement of serum creatinine and *** Our results indicated an overall excellent agreement in CKD staging(kappa = 0.918) between the Jaffé serum creatinine-and enzymatic serum creatinine-based CKDEPI-eGFR, with 9% of discordant cases. As compared to the enzymatic creatinine, the majority of discordances(8%) were positive, i.e., associated with the more advanced CKD stage re-classification, whereas only 1% of cases were negatively discordant if Jaffé creatinine was used for eGFR calculation. A minor proportion of the discordant cases(3.5%) were re-classified into clinically relevant CKD stage indicating mildly to moderately decreased kidney function(m L/min per 1.73 m^2). Significant acute and chronic hyperglycaemia, assessedas plasma glucose and Hb A1 c levels far above the recommended glycaemic goals, was associated with positively discordant cases. Due to a very low frequency, positive discordance is not likely to present a great burden for the health-care providers, while intensified medical care may actually be beneficial for the small number of discordant patients. On the other hand, a very low proportion of negatively discordant cases(1%) at the 60 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 eGFR level indicate a negligible possibility to miss the CKD diagnosis, which could be the most prominent clinical problem affecting patient care, considering high risk of CKD for adverse patient outcomes. CONCLUSION This study indicate that compensated Jaffé creatinine procedure, in spite of the glucose-dependent bias, is not inferior to enzymatic creatinine in CKD diagnosis/

S-Nitrosothiols or thionitrites with the general formula RSNO are formally composed of the nitrosyl cation(NOt) and a thiolate(RSà), the base of the corresponding acids RSH. The smallest S-nitrosothiol is HSNO and derives from hydrogen sulfide(HSH, H_2S). The most common physiological S-nitrosothiols are derived from the amino acid L-cysteine(Cys SH). Thus, the simplest S-nitrosothiol is S-nitroso-L-cysteine(Cys SNO). Cys SNO is a spontaneous potent donor of nitric oxide(NO) which activates soluble guanylyl cyclase to form cyclic guanosine monophosphate(c GmP). This activation is associated with multiple biological actions that include relaxation of smooth muscle cells and inhibition of platelet *** NO, Cys SNO is a short-lived species and occurs physiologically at concentrations around 1 n m in human blood. Cys SNO can be formed from Cys SH and higher oxides of NO including nitrous acid(HONO)and its anhydride(N_2O_3). The most characteristic feature of RSNO is the S-transnitrosation reaction by which the NOtgroup is reversibly transferred to another thiolate. By this way numerous RSNO can be formed such as the low-molecular-mass S-nitroso-N-acetyl-L-cysteine(SNAC) and S-nitroso-glutathione(GSNO), and the high-molecular-mass S-nitrosol-L-cysteine hemoglobin(Hb Cys SNO) present in erythrocytes and S-nitrosol-L-cysteine albumin(Alb Cys SNO) present in plasma at concentrations of the order of 200 n m. All above mentioned RSNO exert NO-related biological activity, but they must be administered intravenously. This important drawback can be overcome by lipophilic charge-free ***, we prepared the ethyl ester of SNAC, the S-nitroso-N-acetyl-L-cysteine ethyl ester(SNACET), from synthetic N-acetyl-L-cysteine ethyl ester(NACET). morbidity and mortality of coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis in very-low-birth-weight infants

Background Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the most common cause of late-onset sepsis in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and usually require vancomycin treatment. Our objective was to determine whether CoNS are associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality. methods This was a retrospective cohort study of very-low-birth-weight (VLBW, ≤ 1500 g) infants from 1989 to 2015. Exclusion criteria were major congenital anomaly or death within 72 h. CoNS was considered a pathogen if recovered from ≥ 2 cultures, or 1 culture if treated for ≥ 5 days and signs of sepsis were present. Logistic regression was used to exam-ine factors associated with morbidity and mortality. Results Of 2242 VLBW infants, 285 (12.7%) had late-onset sepsis. CoNS (125, 44%),Staphylococcus aureus (52, 18%), and Escherichia coli (36, 13%) were the most commonly recovered organisms. In multivariate analysis, CoNS sepsis was not associated with mortality (OR 0.6 (95% CI 0.2-2.6)), but sepsis with other organisms was (OR 4.5 (95% CI 2.6-8.0))CoNS sepsis was associated with longer hospitalization but not risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hem-orrhage, or retinopathy of prematurity. Conclusion CoNS sepsis was not associated with mortality or morbidities other than length of stay. These findings support vancomycin-reduction strategies in the NICU.
