Association between baseline levels of muscular strength and risk of stroke in later life:The Cooper Center Longitudinal Study

Clinical gait analysis in older children with autism spectrum disorder

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder(ASd)often exhibit motor deficits that increase their risk of *** is a lack of understanding regarding gait biomechanics demonstrated by older children with *** purpose of the study was to determine differences in gait patterns between older children with ASd and typically developing *** children with ASd and 11 age-and gender-matched typically developing children were recruited for the *** walked on a force-instrumented treadmill at a constant speed(1.1 m/s-1.2 m/s)for five minutes(min).Participants performed maximal voluntary contractions to assess their knee muscular *** between individuals with ASd and matched control participants were examined through paired t-tests with a significance level of p*** with ASd demonstrated a smaller knee extensor torque compared to controls(p=0.002).Participants with ASd exhibited a shorter stride length(p=0.04),a greater cadence(p=0.03),and a higher variation in stride width(p=0.04)compared to control *** individuals with ASd experienced a greater braking ground reaction force(p=0.03)during loading *** results indicate older children with ASd develop a unique gait pattern signified by a reduced stride length,increased cadence,and an increase of variation in stride *** unique gait pattern may represent a movement strategy used by the individuals with ASd to compensate for the weakness associated with their knee extensor *** with ASd who demonstrate these unique gait deviations may face reduced postural stability and an increased risk of fall-related injuries.

A compartment and metapopulation model of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in southwestern United States and northern Mexico

Rocky Mountain spotted fever(RMSf)is a fatal tick-borne zoonotic disease that has emerged as an epidemic in western North America since the turn of the 21st *** the US south-western border and across northern Mexico,the brown dog tick,Rhipicephalus sanguineus,is responsible for spreading the disease between dogs and *** widespread nature of the disease and the ongoing epidemics contrast with historically sporadic patterns of the *** dogs are amplifying hosts for the Rickettsia rickettsii bacteria,transmission dynamics between dogs and ticks are critical for understanding the *** this paper,we developed a compartment metapopulation model and used it to explore the dynamics and drivers of RMSf in dogs and brown dog ticks in a theoretical region in western North *** discovered that there is an extended lag—as much as two years—between introduction of the pathogen to a naïve population and epidemic-level transmission,suggesting that infected ticks could disseminate extensively before disease is detected.A single large city-size population of dogs was sufficient to maintain the disease over a decade and serve as a source for disease in surrounding smaller *** model is a novel tool that can be used to identify high risk areas and key intervention points for epidemic RMSf spread by brown dog ticks.

Use of Patient-Specific “4d” Tele-Education to Enhance Actual and Perceived Knowledge in Congenital Heart disease (CHd) Patients

designation of critical habitat is an important conservation tool for species listed as threatened or endangered under the United States(U.S.)Endangered Species Act(ESA).While this is an important protective mechanism,lands designated as critical habitat could still be subject to degradation and fragmentation if they are not also in a protected status that prioritizes biodiversity ***,most designations of critical habitat do not explicitly take climate change into *** objective of our study was to determine whether and to what extent critical habitats for species listed under the ESA are located within protected areas and areas previously identified as climate refugia or climate corridors,to inform management strategies to better conserve and recover these *** mapped the designated critical habitats of 153 ESA-listed species and measured their overlap with previously-identified areas of climate refugia and corridors(CRC),and also with lands designated as nature-protected by *** Survey’s Gap Analysis Project(GAP Status 1 or 2)and working lands with wildlife habitat potential(GAP Status 3).Only 18%of all designated critical habitat is located on lands that are both in CRC and nature-protected,and only 9%of species had over half of their designated critical habitats in such lands.84%of species hadf their critical habitats with these *** habitats may therefore not fulfill their essential role of helping imperiled species persist and recover.

Metal-free two-dimensional phosphorene-based electrocatalyst with covalent P-N heterointerfacial reconstruction for electrolyte-lean lithium-sulfur batteries

The use of lithium-sulfur batteries under high sulfur loading and low electrolyte concentrations is severely restricted by the detrimental shuttling behavior of polysulfides and the sluggish kinetics in redox ***-dimensional(2d)few layered black phosphorus with fully exposed atoms and high sulfur affinity can be potential lithium-sulfur battery electrocatalysts,which,however,have limitations of restricted catalytic activity and poor electrochemical/chemical *** resolve these issues,we developed a multifunctional metal-free catalyst by covalently bonding few layered black phosphorus nanosheets with nitrogen-doped carbon-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes(denoted c-fBP-NC).The experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations show that the formed polarized P-N covalent bonds in c-fBP-NC can efficiently regulate electron transfer from NC to fBP and significantly promote the capture and catalysis of lithium polysulfides,thus alleviating the shuttle ***,the robust 1d-2d interwoven structure with large surface area and high porosity allows strong physical confinement and fast mass ***,with c-fBP-NC as the sulfur host,the battery shows a high areal capacity of 7.69 mAh cm^(−2) under high sulfur loading of 8.74 mg cm^(−2) and a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 5.7μL mg^(−1).Moreover,the assembled pouch cell with sulfur loading of 4 mg cm^(−2) and an electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 3.5μL mg^(−1) shows good rate capability and outstanding *** work proposes an interfacial and electronic structure engineering strategy for fast and durable sulfur electrochemistry,demonstrating great potential in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Background In beef cattle, more than 50% of the energy input to produce a unit of beef is consumed by the female that produced the calf. development of genomic tools to identify females with high genetic merit for reproductive function could increase the profitability and sustainability of beef *** Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) were performed using a single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction approach on pregnancy outcome traits from a population of Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers. furthermore, a validation GWAS was performed using data from another farm. Heifers were genotyped with the Bovine GGP f250 array that contains 221,077 SNPs. In the discovery population, heifers were bred in winter breeding seasons involving a single round of timed artificial insemination(AI) followed by natural mating for 3 months. Two phenotypes were analyzed: pregnancy outcome to first-service AI(PAI;n = 1,481) and pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season(PEBS;n = 1,725). The heritability was estimated as 0.149 and 0.122 for PAI and PEBS, respectively. In the PAI model, one quantitative trait locus(QTL), located between 52.3 and 52.5 Mb on BTA7, explained about 3% of the genetic variation, in a region containing a cluster of γ-protocadherin genes and SLC25A2. Other QTLs explaining between 0.5% and 1% of the genetic variation were found on BTA12 and 25. In the PEBS model, a large QTL on BTA7 was synonymous with the QTL for PAI, with minor QTLs located on BTA5, 9, 10, 11, 19, and 20. The validation population for pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season were Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers bred by natural mating.
