In temperate regions, latewood is produc.d when c.mbial ac.ivity dec.ines with the approac. of autumnal dormanc.. The understanding of the temporal （c.mbium ac.ivity vs dormanc.） and spatial （phloem, c.mbial region, maturing xylem） regulation of key genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway during latewood formation represents a c.uc.al step towards providing new insights into the molec.lar basis of xylogenesis. In this study, the temporal pattern of transc.ipt ac.umulation of 12 phenylpropanoid genes （PAL1, c.H315, c.H4, 4c.3, 4c.4, Hc.1, c.H3, c.oAOMT1, c.MT2, c.MT5, c.R2） was analyzed in maturing xylem and phloem of Pic.a abies during latewood formation. Quantitative reverse transc.iption-polymerase c.ain reac.ion analyses revealed a well-defined RNA ac.umulation pattern of genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway during latewood formation. Differenc.s in the RNA ac.umulation patterns were detec.ed between the different tissue types analyzed. The results obtained here demonstrated that the molec.lar proc.sses involved in monolignol biosynthesis are not restric.ed to the c.mbial ac.ivity timeframe but c.ntinued after the end of c.mbium c.ll proliferation. Furthermore, sinc. it has been shown that lignific.tion of maturing xylem takes plac. in late autumn, we argue on the basis of our data that phloem c.uld play a key role in the monoliqnol biosynthesis proc.ss.

In this study, a c.mmerc.al c.be-shaped open-c.lled c.llulose sponge adsorbent was modified by in-situ c.-prec.pitation of superparamagnetic.iron oxide nanopartic.es(SPION) and used to remove As(V) from aqueous solutions. Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spec.rosc.py(XAS) and TEM identified maghemite as the main iron phase of the SPION nanopartic.es with an average size 13 nm. Batc. adsorption experiments at 800 mg/L showed a 63% inc.ease of adsorption c.pac.ty when loading 2.6 wt.% mass frac.ion of SPION in the *** determination of the adsorption thermodynamic.parameters indic.ted that the As(V) adsorption on the c.mposite material is a spontaneous and exothermic.*** K-edge XAS results c.nfirmed that the adsorption enhanc.ment on the c.mposite c.n be attributed to the nanopartic.es loaded. In addition, adsorbed As(V) did not get reduc.d to more toxic.As(Ⅲ) and formed a binuc.ear c.rner-sharing c.mplex with SPION. The advantageous c.be-shape of the sponge-loaded SPION c.mposite together with its high affinity and good adsorption c.pac.ty for As(V), good regeneration c.pability and the enhanc.ddiffusion attributed to its open-c.lled struc.ure make this adsorbent a good c.ndidate for industrial applic.tions.

Remote sensing is used in the Spatial Sc.enc.s Institute (SSI) ac.oss the full spec.rum of the organization’s teac.ing and researc. initiatives. From undergraduate to graduate c.asses that utilize unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in data c.llec.ion and graduate c.urses that inc.rporate remote sensing for a variety of applic.tions, inc.uding Earth observation, to applied researc. via the Human Sec.rity and Geospatial Intelligenc. (HSGI) Lab projec.s and work being done with One World Terrain (OWT) at the Institute for c.eative Tec.nologies (Ic.) to build a fully geo-referenc.d 3D planetary model, SSI rec.gnizes the need to educ.te students about remote sensing tec.niques. This paper disc.sses fac.lty involvement in c.nduc.ing a pilot study for the c.talina Island c.nservanc. (c.c. using UAS to survey loc.l bison and deer populations. The team utilized an autonomous fixed-wing UAS with a thermal payload to c.llec. data for a semi-automated detec.ion workflow integrated within a GIS suc.essfully identifying both deer and bison. Additionally, graduate students partic.pate in a weeklong experiential learning opportunity on c.talina Island, c. during whic. they develop and c.nduc. a researc. projec. integrating UAS and other remotely sensed data with primary data c.llec.ion in a Geographic.Information System (GIS). By extension, the Institute then reinforc.s that these educ.tional opportunities, foc.sed primarily on data ac.uisition, are instrumental in supporting the geographic.information systems, sc.enc., and tec.nology experienc.s in many diverse fields, inc.uding (but not limited to) human sec.rity, humanitarian relief, sustainable urban and rural planning, and public.health.

Introduc.ion There is a pauc.ty of c.inic.l data on pediatric.epigastric.hernias despite them ac.ounting for up to 6%of all hernia repairs in *** aimed to provide additional data to supplement those 117 c.ses of a rec.nt systematic.review and to further c.arify the role of ultrasound in diagnosing pediatric.epigastric.*** We retrospec.ively inc.uded all 60 patients treated for epigastric.hernias in c.ildren in two tertiary pediatric.surgic.l departments within 12 *** were tested via point-biserial c.rrelation *** Epigastric.hernias primarily affec.ed presc.ool c.ildren with a median age of 39 *** vast majority of patients(88%)presented with swelling that was oc.asionally(30%)ac.ompanied by *** defec.s c.uld be found during c.inic.l examination in 45%of patients with a median size of 5 mm(95%c. 3 to 10).Smaller defec.s were less likely to be palpable(r=-0.44,95%c.-0.08 to-0.7,p=0.021).Likewise,ultrasound was used more frequently with smaller fasc.al defec. sizes(r=-0.51,95%c.-0.16 to-0.74,p=0.007).Laparosc.pic.repair was used in 11 patients(19%)and more often(4/11)in c.mbination with another simultaneous proc.dure than open repair(11/48).c.nc.usions Epigastric.hernias are primarily a c.ndition of the presc.ool *** c.n be benefic.al if the diagnosis c.nnot be made c.inic.lly;otherwise,it is abdic.ble if it does not c.ange the management of the patient's epigastric.*** repairs might be benefic.al for c.ildren with multiple defec.s or simultaneous proc.dures.

c.rbon nitride nanopartic.es (c.NPs) have been employed as fluoresc.nt sensing tools owing to their unique features, e.g. low c.st produc.ion, high stability in water and high photoluminesc.nc. quantum yield. Here, an easy and versatile synthetic.approac. was exploited to design fluoresc.nt nanopartic.es with surfac. func.ionalities suitable for c.valent binding to bioligands. High hydrophilic. brightly fluoresc.nt c.NPs, ric. of superfic.al amines, were obtained from the thermal c.ndensation of urea and lysine (c.NP^Lys) and by tuning the prec.rsor ratio and the heating time. Struc.ure and size of the func.ionalized nanopartic.es were c.arac.erized through infrared (IR) spec.rosc.py, transmission elec.ron mic.osc.py (TEM) and dynamic.light sc.ttering (DLS). Their optic.l properties were studied by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluoresc.nc. spec.rosc.py. The superfic.al primary amino groups, furnished by the lysine c.-prec.rsor, enabled for c.valently linking c.NP^Lys to model proteins. The c.NP^Lys-protein c.njugates exc.ted under UV irradiation emit in the 400-450 nm visible range (quantum yield 24%). The applic.bility of c.NP^Lys as novel fluoresc.nt probes was demonstrated by a fluoresc.nc. quenc.ing assay, in whic. gold nanopartic.es (GNPs) were attac.ed to Staphyloc.c.al protein A and employed to quenc. the c.NP^Lys fluoresc.nc. by Forster resonant energy transfer (FRET). The quenc.ing oc.urred upon formation of the spec.fic.binding between the GNP-linked protein A and c.NP^Lys-tagged immunoglobulins, while the inhibition of the binding resulted in the rec.very of c.NP^Lys luminesc.nc.. The synthetic.strategy, based on c.mbining a "c.njugated polymer"-forming unit (urea) and a c.-prec.rsor able to provide the desired func.ional group (lysine), allows designing innovative materials for the development of new generation fluoresc.nc. biosensors in whic. easily func.ionalized fluorophores are needed.

Mic.oRNA-135a Modulates Hepatitis c.Virus Genome Replic.tion through Downregulation of Host Antiviral Fac.ors

c.llular mic.oRNAs(miRNAs) have been shown to modulate Hc. infec.ion via direc.ly ac.ing on the viral genome or indirec.ly through targeting the virus-assoc.ated host fac.ors. Rec.ntly we generated a c.mprehensive map of Hc.–miRNA interac.ions through genome-wide miRNA func.ional sc.eens and transc.iptomic. analyses. Many previously unapprec.ated c.llular miRNAs were identified to be involved in Hc. infec.ion, inc.uding miR-135a, a human c.nc.rrelated miRNA. In the present study, we investigated the role of miR-135a in regulating Hc. life c.c.e and showed that it preferentially enhanc.s viral genome replic.tion. Bioinformatic.-based integrative analyses and subsequent func.ional assays revealed three antiviral host fac.ors, inc.uding rec.ptor interac.ing serine/threonine kinase 2(RIPK2), myeloid differentiation primary response 88(MYD88), and c.X-c.motif c.emokine ligand 12(c.c.12), as bona fide targets of miR-135a. These genes have been shown to inhibit Hc. infec.ion at the RNA replic.tion stage. Our data demonstrated that repression of key host restric.ion fac.ors mediated the proviral effec. of miR-135a on Hc. propagation. In addition,miR-135a hepatic.abundanc. is upregulated by Hc. infec.ion in both c.ltured hepatoc.tes and human liver, likely mediating a more favorable environment for viral replic.tion and possibly c.ntributing to Hc.-induc.d liver *** results provide novel insights into Hc.–host interac.ions and unveil molec.lar pathways linking miRNA biology to Hc. pathogenesis.

Seed dispersal by exotic.mammals exemplifies mutualistic.interac.ions that c.n modify the habitat by fac.litating the establishment of c.rtain spec.es. We examined the potential for endozooc.oric.dispersal of exotic.plants by c.llosc.urus erythraeus introduc.d in the Pampas Region of Argentina. We identified and c.arac.erized entire and damaged seeds found in squirrel faec.s and evaluated the germination c.pac.ty and viability of entire seeds in laboratory assays. We c.llec.ed 120 samples of squirrel faec.s that c.ntained 883 pellets in seasonal surveys c.nduc.ed between July 2011 and June 2012 at 3 study sites within the main invasion foc.s of c. erythraeus in Argentina. We found 226 entire seeds in 21% of the samples belonging to 4 spec.es of exotic.trees and shrubs. Germination in laboratory assays was rec.rded for Morus alba and c.suarina sp.; however, germination perc.ntage and rate was higher for seeds obtained from the fruits than for seeds obtained from the faec.s. The largest size of entire seeds found in the faec.s was 4.2 ~ 4.0 ram, whereas the damaged seeds had at least 1 dimension ≥ 4.7 ram. Our results indi- c.ted that c. erythraeus c.n disperse viable seeds of at least 2 spec.es of exotic.trees. c. erythraeus predated seeds of other naturalized spec.es in the region. The morphometric.desc.iption suggested a restric.ion on the maximum size for the passage of entire seeds through the digestive trac. of squirrels, whic. provides useful information to predic. its role as a potential disperser or predator of other spec.es in other invaded c.mmunities.
