Pollution control structures m.y be adapted to enhance the rem.val of nutrients and pesticides from.water. Charcoal-like m.terial is known to sorb organic com.ounds in solution, including atrazine, a herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds, which persists in soils and can m.grate from.soils to water bodies, ultim.tely affecting water quality. The prim.ry goal of this study was to investigate if activated charcoal cloths (single-weave, SW;double-weave, DW;and knitted, KT) are m.re efficient to rem.ve atrazine from.aqueous solutions than a cloth without activated charcoal (control) currently used in pollution control structures. The approach consisted of sorption kinetics, flow-through, and desorption/degradation experim.nts using 50 and 1000μg L-1 atrazine solutions. Results showed that within 30 m.n of contact tim., the control sorbed from.22.6 to 36.1% of atrazine in solution;whereas the activated charcoal cloths sorbed from.76 to 99% of atrazine in solution (SW > KT > DW). The flow-through ex-perim.nts showed that the SW sorbed 88.2, 76.1, and 52.2%of atrazine at the contact tim. of 0.75, 5, and 10 m.n, respectively. After 28 days of incubation, previously sorbed atrazine on the SW cloth did not degrade and m.roving atrazine rem.val in water in pollution control structures.

Although pharm.ceuticals have beendetected in the environm.nt only in the range from.ng/L to μg/L, it has beendem.nstrated that they can adversely affect the health status of aquatic organism.. Lysosom.l m.m.rane stability （Lm.） has previously been applied as an indicator of cellularwell-being todeterm.ne health status in bivalve m.ssels. The objective of this study is to evaluate Lm. in Ruditapes philippinarum.haem.lym.h using the neutral red retention assay （NRRA）. Clam.were exposed in laboratory conditions to caffeine （0.1, 5, 15, 50 μg/L）, ibuprofen （0.1, 5, 10, 50 μg/L）, carbam.zepine and novobiocin （both at 0.1, 1, 10, 50 μg/L） for35days. Results show adose-dependent effect of the pharm.ceuticals. The neutral red retention tim. m.asured at the end of the bioassaywas significantly reduced by 50% after exposure to environm.ntal concentrations （p 〈 0.05）（caffeine = 15 μg/L; ibuprofen = 10 μg/L; carbam.zepine = 1 μg/L and novobiocin = 1 μg/L）, com.ared to controls. Clam. exposed to these pharm.ceuticalswere considered to present adim.nished health status （retention tim. 〈45 m.n）, significantlyworse than controls （96 m.n）（p 〈 0.05）. The predicted no environm.ntal effect concentration （PNEC） results showed that these pharm.ceuticals are very toxic at the environm.ntal concentrations tested. m.asurem.nt of the alteration of Lm. has been found to be a sensitive technique that enables evaluation of the health status of clam. after exposure to pharm.ceuticals under laboratory conditions, thus representing a robust Tier-1 screening biom.rker.

Perovskite solar cells(PSCs) have revolutionized photovoltaic research. As a result, a certified power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 25.5% was recorded in late 2020. Although this efficiency is com.arable with silicon solar cells;som. issues rem.in partially unsolved, such as lead toxicity, instability of perovskite m.terials under continuous illum.nation, m.isture and oxygen, and degradation of the m.tallic counter electrodes. As an alternative to tackle this last concern, carbon m.terials have been recently used, due to their good electrical and therm.l conductivity, and chem.cal stability, which m.kes them.one of the m.st prom.sing m.terials to replace m.tallic counter electrodes in the fabrication of PSCs. This review highlights the recent advances of carbon-based PSCs, where the carbon electrode(CE) is the m.in *** have becom. very prom.sing candidates for PSCs;they are m.inly fabricated using a sim.le com.ination of graphite and carbon black powders em.edded in a binder m.trix, giving a paste that is then solution-processable, resulting in devices with im.roved quality stability, when com.ared to m.tallic electrodes. In this review, CE’s com.osition is em.hasized, since it can give both, high and lowtem.erature processed electrodes, com.atible with different device configurations. Finally, the tendencies and opportunities to use CE in PSCs devices are presented.

m.croRNAs (m.Rs) are sm.ll non-coding RNAs that regulate both m.NA and protein expression of target genes, which results in alterations in m.NA stability or translation inhibition. m.Rs influence at least one third of all hum.n transcripts and are known regulators of various im.ortant cellular growth and differentiation factors. m.Rs have recently em.rged as key regulatory m.lecules in chronic liver disease. This review details recent contributions to the field of m.Rs that influence liver developm.nt and the broad spectrum.of disease, from.non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to fibrosis/cirrhosis, with particular em.hasis on hepatic stellate cells and potential use of m.Rs as therapeutic tools.

Rising consum.r concerns with synthetic drugs to treat non-com.unicable diseases(NCDs)have prom.ted a shift towards using natural biological active constituents that offer sim.lar health *** canary seed(Phalaris canariensis L)is an em.rging crop traditionally used in m.xico to treat *** liberated during sim.lated digestion of canary seed protein are believed to be responsible for their biological activity;however,no studies have shown the effect of controlled protein hydrolysis using com.ercial proteases on canary seed protein’s biological ***,this study aim.d to explore the in vitro antihypertensive,antidiabetic,and anti-obesity activity of canary seed peptides derived from.proteolysis with Alcalase®.Protein fractions were prim.rily com.osed of prolam.ns(54.07±1.8%),glutelins(32.19±3.18%),globulins(5.97±0.52%)and album.ns(5.97±0.52%).Them.(IC50=0.028–0.032 m./m.)lipase(IC50=2.15–2.27 m./m.),α-glucosidase(IC50=0.82–1.15 m./m.),and dipeptidyl-peptidase-IV(IC50=1.27–1.60 m./m.).Additionally,these peptide fractions showed high antioxidant activity against DPPH(134.22–150.66μm.l TE/m.)and ABTS(520.92–813.33μm.l TE/m.).These results provide an insight into the potential developm.nt of functional foods using com.ercial enzym.tic hydrolysis of canary seed proteins for treating hypertension,type-2 diabetes,and obesity.

Background In in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatm.nt, preim.lantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGD/S) attem.ts to detect chrom.som.l abnorm.lities in em.ryos before im.lantation. Using the m.ta-analytic and qualitative review approaches, this study aim. to evaluate the effect of PGD/S on clinical pregnancy, live births, and childhood outcom.s. m.thods We conducted a literature search using 1) Pubm.d and other search engines, and 2) an ancestry search by track-ing references cited in prior work. After screening the studies, we extracted inform.tion pertinent to the m.ta-analysis. We calculated the effect sizes for clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, and perform.d a m.deration analysis by m.ternal age, type of genetic screening, and tim.ng of the biopsy. For childhood outcom.s, we conducted a system.tic review of studies reporting the anthropom.tric, psychom.tor, cognitive, behavioral, and fam.ly functioning of PGD/S children. Results We included 26 studies for clinical pregnancy and live births, and 18 studies for childhood outcom.s. Results indi-cated that wom.n who underwent com.rehensive chrom.som. screening-based PGD/S had significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates (rr 1.207, 95% CI 1.017–1.431) and live birth rates (rr 1.362, 95% CI 1.057–1.755) than those whose IVF treatm.nt did not include PGD/S. Early childhood outcom.s of PGD/S children did not differ from.those of non-PGD/S children. Conclusions Com.rehensive chrom.som. screening-based PGD/S can im.rove clinical pregnancy and live birth rates without adversely affecting functioning in childhood at least up to age 9. Results are discussed in the context of bioethical, financial, legal, and psychological issues surrounding PGD/S.
