Telecentres in Mountain Regions-A Peruvian Case Study of the Impact of Information and Communication Technologies on Remoteness and Exclusion

Communities in developing country mountain areas,in part due to their remoteness,find themselves excluded from social,political and economic systems; and excluded from access to resources. This paper aims to study the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on remoteness and exclusion. It utilises two models - the resource movement framework,and the "information chain" - to analyse a telecentre in one district of mountainous Huancavelica,Peru's poorest region,set in the high Andes. It finds ICTs enabling new and positive resource flows for the two key user groups:teenaged school students and young farmers. These help to maintain social networks. They also support information searches that have improved agricultural practice where other information chain resources have been available. But non-use and ineffective use of the telecentre are found where information chain resources are lacking. ICTs have some impacts on intangible elements of remoteness. In this particular example,they also offer access to some previously-excluded resources. But they have not really addressed the systematic exclusions faced by mountain communities. And they so far appear to be a technology of inequality; favouring those residents who begin with better resource *** paper concludes by offering some recommendations for mountain ICT project practice.

Effect of insoluble materials on the volumetric behavior of rock salt

This paper focuses on the presence of nodules of insoluble materials within salt specimens,and their effect on the volumetric strain measurements and the dilatancy *** analyzed experimental results of over 120 conventional triaxial compression tests,and found that in 20%of the cases,the volumetric strain measurements were *** also noted that the natural variability of the specimens can lead to a non-negligible data scattering in the volumetric strain measurements when different specimens are subjected to the same *** is expected given the small magnitude of those strains,but it occasionally implies that the corresponding specimens are not representative of the volumetric behavior of the studied *** order to understand these results,we numerically investigated salt specimens modeled as halite matrices with inclusions of *** of triaxial compression tests on these structures proved that such heterogeneities can induce dilatancy,and their presence can lead to the appearance of tensile zones which is physically translated into a micro-cracking *** modeling approach is validated as the patterns displayed in the numerical results are identical to that in the *** was then employed to explain the observed irregularities in experimental *** studied the natural variability effect as well and proposed a methodology to overcome the issue of specimen representativity from both deviatoric and volumetric perspectives.

Extracellular vesicles in liver disease and beyond

Extracellular vesicles(EVs) are membrane-derived vesicles which can be released by different cell types, including hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells and immune cells in normal and pathological conditions. EVs carry lipids, proteins, coding and non-coding RnAs and mitochondrial DnA causing modifications on the recipient cells. These vesicles are considered potential biomarkers and therapeutic agents for human diagnostic and prognostic due to their function as intercellular mediators of cell-cell communication within the liver and between other organs. However, the development and optimization of methods for EVs isolation is required to characterize their biological functions as well as their potential as a treatment option in the clinic. nevertheless, many questions remain unanswered related to the function of EVs under physiological and pathological conditions. In the current editorial, the results obtained in different studies that investigated the role of intrahepatic EVs during liver diseases, including drug-induced liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, alcoholic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma and extrahepatic EVs in remote organs during pathological events such as pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders e.g., Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis as well as in immunopathological processes, are discussed. Although much light needs to be shed on the mechanisms of EVs, these membranederived vesicles represent both a novel promising diagnostic, and a therapeutic tool for clinical use that we emphasize in the current editorial.

High‑Order ADER Discontinuous Galerkin Schemes for a Symmetric Hyperbolic Model of Compressible Barotropic Two‑Fluid Flows

This paper presents a high-order discontinuous Galerkin(DG)finite-element method to solve the barotropic version of the conservative symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible(SHTC)model of compressible two-phase flow,introduced by Romenski et ***[59,62],in multiple space *** the absence of algebraic source terms,the model is endowed with a curl constraint on the relative velocity *** this paper,the hyperbolicity of the system is studied for the first time in the multidimensional case,showing that the original model is only weakly hyperbolic in multiple space *** restore the strong hyperbolicity,two different methodologies are used:(i)the explicit symmetrization of the system,which can be achieved by adding terms that contain linear combinations of the curl involution,similar to the Godunov-Powell terms in the MHD equations;(ii)the use of the hyperbolic generalized Lagrangian multiplier(GLM)curl-cleaning approach *** PDE system is solved using a high-order ADER-DG method with a posteriori subcell finite-volume limiter to deal with shock waves and the steep gradients in the volume fraction commonly appearing in the solutions of this type of *** illustrate the performance of the method,several different test cases and benchmark problems have been run,showing the high order of the scheme and the good agreement when compared to reference solutions computed with other well-known methods.

Pregnancy and child developmental outcomes after preimplantation genetic screening: a meta-analytic and systematic review

Background In in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGD/S) attempts to detect chromosomal abnormalities in embryos before implantation. Using the meta-analytic and qualitative review approaches, this study aims to evaluate the effect of PGD/S on clinical pregnancy, live births, and childhood outcomes. Methods We conducted a literature search using 1) PubMed and other search engines, and 2) an ancestry search by track-ing references cited in prior work. After screening the studies, we extracted information pertinent to the meta-analysis. We calculated the effect sizes for clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, and performed a moderation analysis by maternal age, type of genetic screening, and timing of the biopsy. For childhood outcomes, we conducted a systematic review of studies reporting the anthropometric, psychomotor, cognitive, behavioral, and family functioning of PGD/S children. Results We included 26 studies for clinical pregnancy and live births, and 18 studies for childhood outcomes. Results indi-cated that women who underwent comprehensive chromosome screening-based PGD/S had significantly higher clinical pregnancy rates (rr 1.207, 95% CI 1.017–1.431) and live birth rates (rr 1.362, 95% CI 1.057–1.755) than those whose IVF treatment did not include PGD/S. Early childhood outcomes of PGD/S children did not differ from those of non-PGD/S children. Conclusions Comprehensive chromosome screening-based PGD/S can improve clinical pregnancy and live birth rates without adversely affecting functioning in childhood at least up to age 9. Results are discussed in the context of bioethical, financial, legal, and psychological issues surrounding PGD/S.

Importance of dementia and Alzheimer's disease(AD): On Earth, there is a "country" that we call Dementia with around 50 million inhabitants and an estimated global economic cost of US $1 trillion(Wimo et al., 2017).AD may contribute to 60–70% of cases, with other major forms of dementia being vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and a group of diseases that contribute to frontotemporal ***, the boundaries between different forms of dementia are indistinct and mixed forms often co-exist, which are only confirmed after postmortem neuropathological studies(Fernandez-Vega et al., 2015).
