The resonant frequency of metamaterials structured with split ring resonator(SRR) meta-atoms is determined primarily through the capacitance and inductance of the individual meta-atoms. Two designs that vary inductance incrementally were modeled, simulated, fabricated, and tested to investigate the role inductance plays in metamaterial designs. The designs consisted of strategically adding sections to the SRR to increase the inductance, but in a manner that minimized capacitance variations. Each design showed a shift in resonant frequency that was proportional to the length of the added section. As the length of each section was increased, the resonant frequency shifted from 2.78 GHz to 2.18 GHz.

＜正＞A brief review of the application of optimisation methods in conj.nction with numerical simulation to design of extrusion dies for plastics and rubber is given. Following this, based on a simulation of slit die performance that tak.s into account the coupling of melt flow and die body deflection due to melt pressure, a genetic algorithm is applied to determine chok.r bar profiles to give optimum melt flow distribution. The software mak.s it possible to predict the practical operating range of dies in terms of melt flow properties and throughput.

With the current limited drug therapy for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder(ASD),we herein report a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy,safety,and potential neural mechanism of bumetanide in children with ASD aged 3-6 years old.A total of 120 children were enrolled into the study and randomly assigned to either 0.5 mg bumetanide or *** the final sample,119 children received at least one dose of bumetanide(59 children) or placebo(60 children) were included in the final *** primary outcome was a reduction in the Childhood Autism Rating Scale(CARS) score,and the secondary outcomes were the Clinical Global Impressions Scale(CGI)-Global Improvement(CGI-I) score at 3 months and the change from baseline to 3-month in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule(ADOS).Magnetic resonance spectroscopy(MRS) was used to measure y-aminobutyric acid(GABA) and glutamate neurotransmitter concentrations in the insular cortex(IC) before and after the *** compared with the placebo,bumetanide treatment was significantly better in reducing the *** patient withdrew from the trial due to adverse *** superiority of bumetanide to placebo in reducing insular GABA,measured using MRS,was *** clinical improvement was associated with a decrease in insular GABA in the bumetanide *** conclusion,this trial in a large group of young children with predominantly moderate and severe ASD demonstrated that bumetanide is safe and effective in improving the core symptoms of ***,the clinical significance remains uncertain,and future multi-center clinical trials are required to replicate these findings and confirm the clinical significance using a variety of outcome measures.

Relationship of Soil Moisture and Reflected GPS Signal Strength

We present periodic variations of the migrating diurnal tide from Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) temperature and wind data from 2002 to 2007 and meteor radar data at Maui (20.75°N, 156.43°W). There are strong quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) signatures in the amplitude of the diurnal tidal temperature in the tropical region and in the wind near ±20°. The magnitude of the QBO in the diurnal tidal amplitude reaches about 3 k.in temperature and about 7 m/s (Northern Hemisphere) and 9 m/s (Southern Hemisphere) in meridional wind. The period of the diurnal tide QBO is around 24-25 months in the mesosphere but is quite variable with altitude in the stratosphere. Throughout the mesosphere, the amplitude of the diurnal tide reaches maximum during March/April of years when the QBO in lower stratospheric wind is in the eastward phase. Because the tide shows amplification only during a limited time of the year, there are not enough data yet to determine whether the tidal variation is truly biennial (24-month period) or is quasi-biennial. The semiannual (SAO) and annual oscillations (AO) in the diurnal tide support previous findings: tidal amplitude is largest around equinoxes (SAO signal) and is larger during the vernal equinox (AO signal). TIMED Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (TIMED/SABER) temperature and atmospheric pressure data are used to calculate the balance wind and the tides in horizontal wind. The comparison between the calculations and the wind observed by TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) and meteor radar indicates qualitative agreement, but there are some differences as well.

Many agricultural fields across the country have a high degree of variability in soil type and water holding capacity that affects irrigation management. One way to overcome problems associated with the field variability for improving irrigation management is to utilize a site-specific irrigation system. This system applies water to match the needs of individual management zones within a field. A real-time continuous soil moisture measurement is essential for the success of site-specific irrigation systems. Recently the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) developed sensor technology that records the global positioning system (GPS) signal reflected from the surface of Earth, which estimates the dielectric properties of soil and can be used to estimate soil moisture contents. The overall obj.ctive of this study was to determine the feasibility of utilizing GPS-based technology developed by NASA for soil moisture measurements and to determine the influence of soil type, soil compaction, and ground cover on the measurements. The results showed strong positive correlations between soil moisture and reflected signals. Other factors (soil compaction and soil type), were not significantly related to reflectivity and did not significantly change the relationship between reflectivity and soil moisture contents. In addition, ground cover (rye crop) did not significantly reduce reflectivity. Therefore, this system could be used as a real-time and continuous nonintrusive soil moisture sensor for site-specific irrigation scheduling and watershed management.

NASA is developing the Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) mission to provide accurate measurements to substantially improve understanding of climate change. CLARREO will include a Reflected Solar (RS) Suite, an Infrared (IR) Suite, and a Global Navigation Satellite System-Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO). The IR Suite consists of a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) covering 5 to 50 micrometers (2000-200 cm-1 wavenumbers) and on-orbit calibration and verification systems. The IR instrument will use a cavity black.ody view and a deep space view for on-orbit calibration. The calibration black.ody and the verification system black.ody will both have Phase Change Cells (PCCs) to accurately provide a SI reference to absolute temperature. One of the most critical parts of obtaining accurate CLARREO IR scene measurements relies on k.owing the spectral radiance output from the black.ody calibration source. The black.ody spectral radiance must be k.own with a low uncertainty, and the magnitude of the uncertainty itself must be reliably quantified. This study focuses on determining which parameters in the spectral radiance equation of the calibration black.ody are critical to the black.ody accuracy. Fourteen parameters are identified and explored. Design of Experiments (DOE) is applied to systematically set up an experiment (i.e., parameter settings and number of runs) to explore the effects of these 14 parameters. The experiment is done by computer simulation to estimate uncertainty of the calibration black.ody spectral radiance. Within the explored ranges, only 4 out of 14 parameters were discovered to be critical to the total uncertainty in black.ody radiance, and should be designed, manufactured, and/or controlled carefully. The uncertainties obtained by computer simulation are also compared to those obtained using the “Law of Propagation of Uncertainty”. The two methods produce statistically different uncertainties.
