Effects of food quality on trade-offs among growth, immunity and survival in the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella

The resources available to an individual in any given environment are finite, and variation in life history traits reflect differential allocation of these resources to competing life functions. Nutritional quality of food is of particular importance in these life history decisions. In this study, we tested trade-offs among growth, immunity and survival in 3 groups of greater wax moth （Galleria mellonella） larvae fed on diets of high and average nutritional quality. We found rapid growth and weak immunity （as measured by encapsulation response） in the larvae of the high-energy food group. It took longer to develop on food of average nutritional quality. However, encapsulation response was stronger in this group. The larvae grew longer in the low-energy food group, and had the strongest encapsulation response. We observed the highest survival rates in larvae of the low-energy food group, while the highest mortality rates were observed in the high-energy food group. A significant negative correlation between body mass and the strength of encapsulation response was found only in the high-energy food group revealing significant competition between growth and immunity only at the highest rates of growth. The results of this study help to establish relationships between types of food, its nutritional value and life history traits of G. mellonella larvae.

The healthcare sector holds valuable and sensitive *** amount of this data and the need to handle,exchange,and protect it,has been increasing at a fast *** to their nature,software-defined networks(SDNs)are widely used in healthcare systems,as they ensure effective resource utilization,safety,great network management,and *** this sector,due to the value of thedata,SDNs faceamaj.r challengeposed byawide range of attacks,such as distributed denial of service(DDoS)and probe *** attacks reduce network performance,causing the degradation of different key performance indicators(KPIs)or,in the worst cases,a network failure which can threaten human *** can be significant,especially with the current expansion of portable healthcare that supports mobile and wireless devices for what is called mobile health,or *** this study,we examine the effectiveness of using SDNs for defense against DDoS,as well as their effects on different network KPIs under various *** propose a threshold-based DDoS classifier(TBDC)technique to classify DDoS attacks in healthcare SDNs,aiming to block traffic considered a hazard in the form of a DDoS *** then evaluate the accuracy and performance of the proposed TBDC *** technique shows outstanding performance,increasing the mean throughput by 190.3%,reducing the mean delay by 95%,and reducing packet loss by 99.7%relative to normal,with DDoS attack traffic.

Photopic negative response in diagnosis of glaucoma:an experimental study in glaucomatous rabbit model

AIM: To determine whether the photopic negative response(Ph NR) elicited by transient white flash on white background is characterizing for glaucoma model in ***: Glaucoma was induced in twelve rabbits by subconj.nctival inj.ction of 0.05 m L of betamethasone in right eyes(each 1 m L contain betamethasone dipropionate5 mg and betamethasone sodium phosphate 2 mg).The intraocular pressure(IOP), electroretinogram(ERG) and visual evoked potential(VEP) were measured successively prior and on the 3, 7d, two weeks and four weeks postglaucoma induction. After four weeks, the animals were sacrificed and the globes were histopathologically ***: The IOP increased significantly after one week(P =0.0001), then it gradually returned to the control level. In ERG examination, the means of a and b wave amplitude and latency were not affected *** NR amplitude decreased significantly within one week(P =0.0001), but its latency was not affected significantly(P =0.132). The means of VEP latency and amplitude were significantly affected after two weeks and four weeks of glaucoma induction(P =0.0001 and 0.02,respectively). The histopathologic examination of the globes showed reduced number of cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer with multiple vacuoles in the retinal nerve fibre *** was significant positive correlation between ganglion cell layer cells and Ph NR amplitude( r =0.8, P =0.002).CONCLUSION: The rise in IOP resulted in irreversible changes or incomplete recovery of VEP and Ph NR amplitude. Both Ph NR and VEP represented good additional tools in early diagnosis of glaucoma.

Effect of the Si/Al ratio of HZSM-5 zeolite on the production of dimethyl ether before and after ultrasonication

A series of as-synthesized HZSM-5 zeolites with different Si/Al ratios(25,90,120,240 and 400)were post-treated by ultrasonication for an optimum time of 60 *** morphology,acidity and textural properties of HZSM-5 were characterized with XRD,SEM,N_2 adsorption and NH3-TPD *** catalytic performance was evaluated by dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether(DME),which is a promising gaseous automotive fuel in *** was found that the Si/Al ratio of HZSM-5 had considerable impacts on its catalytic performance for dehydration of methanol to *** activity increased with decreasing Si/Al ratio from 400 to *** of HZSM-5 could significantly improve its catalytic performance.

Safety of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide:an electrophysiologic and histopathological study in rabbits

AIM:To evaluate the retinal safety of various doses of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide(ta)in ***:Thirty New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into five groups(six animals each).In group 1(control group),each animal received a single intravitreal inj.ction of 0.1 mL phosphate buffered *** groups2,3,4 and 5,each rabbit received a single intravitreal inj.ction of 4,8,16 and 32mg of ta,*** dose was contained in 0.1 mL phosphate buffered *** ocular examinations were performed before the inj.ction and on the 1st,3rd,10th and 17th postinj.ction days.A standard dark adapted electroretinogram(ERG)was obtained before inj.ction and on the 3rd,10th and 17th post-inj.ction ***17d,animals were sacrificed and their eyes prepared for pathological ***:By monitoring ERG as a functional index for the retina,intravitreal inj.ction of 4mg ta showed no significant ERG *** doses of 8,16 and 32,hyper-abnormal responses in a-and b-waves of ERG were detected on the 3rd post-inj.ction *** changes gradually returned back to normal limits *** examination of the retina of all animals showed no pathological ***:High doses of intravitreal ta seemed to have enhancing effects on the retinal function with gradual return to normal limits with no pathological changes detected in examined eyes.

A new technique of monsplasty as an adj.nctive procedure in cases of abdominoplasty:A prospective clinical trial

Background:No standard monsplasty technique has existed until *** various monsplasty methods have been described,they exhibit high complication rates with sparse postoperative *** that used pubic suspension techniques did not describe exact anatomical landmarks for the mons *** study aimed to improve the aesthetic and functional appearance of the pubic region with long-term results for all grades of pubic ptosis or bulging with abdominoplasty and provide exact anatomical points to anchor the mons to the rectus ***:This non-randomized prospective clinical trial included 30 patients with various degrees of abdominal wall laxity between December 2017 and September *** surgical procedure was performed for female patients with pendulous abdomen,pubic ptosis or bulging,body mass index≤35 kg/m^(2),and age 18–60 *** patients were followed for up to one year;patient satisfaction was assessed before and after surgery regarding aesthetic results and impact on outfits,hygiene,and sexual ***:The marginal homogeneity test revealed a statistically significant patient satisfaction rate regarding outfits,sexual function,hygiene,and *** postoperative complications,seroma(one case)was managed by aspiration,and one case of wound dehiscence was managed conservatively with ***:This study recommends a quick and reproducible monsplasty technique with a low complication rate,a technique that helps determine specific anatomical landmarks for anchoring the mons to the rectus *** this technique with abdominal contouring is advisable for optimal aesthetic results and maintained lymphatic drainage in the pubic region.

Newborn screening for remethylation disorders and vitamin deficiency-evaluation of new strategies in cohorts from Qatar and Germany

Background:Newborn screening is a precondition for early diagnosis and successful treatment of remethylation disorders and classical homocystinuria (cystathionine-β-synthase deficiency).Newborn screening for classical homocystinuria using total homocysteine measurement in dried blood spots has been very successfully performed for many years for newborns from ***:A new optimized newborn screening strategy for remethylation disorders and homocystinuria was developed and evaluated for newborns from Qatar using total homocysteine measurement as first-tier and methionine,methionine-phenylalanine-ratio and propionylcarnitine as *** cnt-offs were also retrospectively evaluated in newborn screening samples of 12 patients with remethylation disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency from Qatar and ***:Over a 12 months period,the proposed strategy led to a decrease in the recall rate in homocysteine screening for Qatar from 1.09% to 0.68%,while allowing for additional systematic inclusion of remethylation disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency into the screening panel for *** the evaluated period the applied strategy would have detected all patients with classical homocystinuria identified by the previous strategy and in addition 5 children with maternal nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency and one patient with an isolated remethylation *** retrospective evaluation of newborn screening samples of 12 patients from Germany and Qatar with remethlyation disorders or vitamin B12 deficiency showed that all of these patients would have been detected by the cutoffs used in the proposed new *** addition,an adapted strategy for Germany using methionine,methionine-phenylalanine-ratio and propionylcarnitine as first-tier,and homocysteine as a second-tier test was also positively evaluated ***:The proposed strategy for samples from Qatar allows inclusion of remethylation disorders and vitamin B12 deficiency

Gas chromatography/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC/ICP-MS) coupled with solid phase micro-extraction can provide a simple, extremely selective and sensitive technique for the analysis of volatile sulfur and selenium compounds in the headspace of growing plants. In this work, the technique was used to evaluate the volatilization of selenium in wild-type and genetically-modified Brassica j.ncea seedlings. By converting toxic inorganic selenium in the soil to less toxic, volatile organic selenium, B. j.ncea might be useful in bioremediation of selenium contaminated soil.
