Apoptotic and cytostatic actions of maslinic acid in colorectal cancer cells through possible IKK-β inhibition

Objective:To explore the anti-cancer activity of maslinic acid against colorectal cancer(CRC)cell lines and its possible ***:The inhibitory effect of maslinic acid was screened against five CRC cell lines(HT-29,HCT 116,SW480,SW48,and LS 174 T)via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide *** and cell cycle analyses were carried out using annexinⅤ-FITC/propidium iodide staining and propidium iodide staining,respectively and subjected to fluorescence-activated cell sorting *** expression studies of inhibitor ofκB kinase-β(IKK-β),checkpoint kinase 1(Chk1)and cyclin D1 were conducted using the JESS ***:Maslinic acid exhibited growth inhibitory effect in a doseand time-dependent manner in HT-29 and HCT 116 cell lines.A more prominent apoptosis induced by maslinic acid was observed in HCT 116 cell ***,in HT-29 cell line,maslinic acid induced cell cycle arrest by inhibiting the G1-S transition,which was accompanied by the downregulation of cyclin *** expression of unphosphorylated IKK-βprotein was increased in both(HT-29 and HCT 116)cell lines after maslinic acid ***:Maslinic acid inhibits the growth of HT-29 and HCT 116 cells in a different manner,induces cell cycle arrest in HT-29 cells and causes apoptosis in HCT 116 cells partially via NF-κB pathway inhibition.

Emissions of C_2-C_(12) hydrocarbons in the Hsuehshan tunnel,Taiwan

The concentrations of 56 hydrocarbons from C2 to C12 were measured simultaneously in the southbound bore,the northbound bore and the exhaust air shafts of the Hsuehshan tunnel near Yilan,Taiwan for 12 days during 2007 and 2008.A total of 60 integrated air samples were collected using stainless steel canisters and analyzed using GC/FID and GC/*** five most abundant species in all samples were ethylene,acetylene,isopentane,propylene and *** exit/entrance ratios of total non-methane hydrocarbons（NMHC） concentration were 7.8 and 4.8 for the southbound and northbound bores,***,the exhaust from the vertical shafts a？ects air quality in the *** most abundant species of emission rate（ER） was toluene（21.93-42.89 mg/sec）,followed by isopentane,ethylene,propylene and 1-butene,with ER ranging from 2.50 to 9.31 mg/*** species in the three exhaust air shafts showed that the reactivities of these emissions are similar to those of vehicle ***,the control of emissions in the vertical shafts of the vehicle tunnel will be important in the future.

Bi-Cubic B-Spline Fitting-Based Local Volatility Model with Mean Reversion Process

This paper studies the traditional local volatility model and proposes:A novel local volatility model with mean-reversion *** larger is the gap between local volatility and its mean level,the higher will be the rate at which local volatility will revert to the ***,a B-spline method with proper knot control is applied to interpolate the local volatility *** bi-cubic B-spline is used to recover the local volatility surface from this local volatility ***,empirical tests show that the proposed mean-reversion local volatility model offers better prediction performance than the traditional local volatility model.

Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesized N-doped titanate nanotubes

Microwave-induced nitrogen-doped titanate nanotubes（NTNTs） were characterized by transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）, Zeta potential analysis,specific surface area（SBET）, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. TEM results indicate that NTNTs retain a tubular structure with a crystalline multiwall and have a length of several hundred nanometers after nitrogen doping. XRD findings demonstrate that the crystalline structure of NTNTs was dominated by anatase, which is favored for photocatalytic application. The Ti-O-N linkage observed in the XPS N 1s spectrum is mainly responsible for narrowing the band gap and eventually enhancing the visible light photoactivity. FT-IR results demonstrated the existence of H3O＋, which could be excited by photo-generated holes to form hydroxyl radicals and degrade environmental pollutants. After sintering at 350°C, the UV-Vis absorbance edges of NTNTs significantly shift to the visible-light region, which indicates N atom doping into the nanotubes. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B（RhB） via NTNTs show good efficiency, with pseudo first-order kinetic model rate constants of 3.7 × 10-3, 2.4 × 10-3and 8.0 × 10-4sec-1at pH 3, 7, and 11, respectively.

A dermatoglyphic study of the Amis aboriginal population of Taiwan

Amis is the largest aboriginal population in Taiwan. The previous dermatoglyphic studies of the Amis only reported limited data. In this study, we collected and analyzed the dermatoglyphs of 200 Amis in-dividuals, and we reported a wide range of dermatoglyphic variables including total finger ridge count, a-b ridge count, atd angle, axial triradius percent distance, and frequencies of fingerprint pattern, pal-mar thenar pattern, palmar interdigital pattern, and simian line. This study is the first comprehensive dermatoglyphic research of Amis since 1960s, and its dermatoglyphic data will be useful for future re-search in anthropology, genetics and medicine.

Clinical trials for treating recurrent head and neck cancer with boron neutron capture therapy using the Tsing-Hua Open Pool Reactor

Head and neck(HN)cancer is an endemic disease in Taiwan,*** recurrent HN cancer after full-dose irradia-tion poses a therapeutic challenge,and boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)may be a solution that could provide durable local control with tolerable *** Tsing-Hua Open Pool Reactor(THOR)at National Tsing-Hua University in Hsin-Chu,provides a high-quality epithermal neutron source for basic and clinical BNCT *** first clinical trial,entitled“A phase I/II trial of boron neutron capture therapy for recurrent head and neck cancer at THOR”,was carried out between 2010 and 2013.A total of 17 patients with 23 recurrent HN tumors who had received high-dose photon irradiation were enrolled in the *** fructose complex of l-boronophenylalanine was used as a boron carrier,and a two-fraction BNCT treatment regimen at 28-day intervals was used for each *** was acceptable,and although the response rate was high(12/17),re-recurrence within or near the radiation site was *** obtain better local control,another clinical trial entitled“A phase I/II trial of boron neutron capture therapy combined with image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy(IG-IMRT)for locally recurrent HN cancer”was initiated in *** first administration of BNCT was performed according to our previous protocol,and IG-IMRT was initiated 28 days after *** of May 2017,seven patients have been treated with this *** treatment-related toxicity was similar to that previously observed with two BNCT *** patients had a complete response,but locoregional recurrence was the major cause of failure despite initially good *** clinical trials combining BNCT with other local or systemic treatments will be carried out for recurrent HN cancer patients at THOR.

Rapid synthesis of Ti-MCM-41 by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method towards photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline

This study employed microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to synthesize Ti-MCM-41,which are mesoporous materials with a high surface area and excellent photocatalytic ability. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy（UV–Vis） were employed. The XRD findings showed that Ti-MCM-41 exhibited a peak at 2θ of 2.2°, which was attributed to the hexagonal MCM-41 structure. The BET（Brunauer–Emmett–Teller） results agreed with the TEM findings that Ti-MCM-41 has a pore size of about 3–5 nm and a high surface area of 883 m-2/g. FTIR results illustrated the existence of Si–O–Si and Si–O–Ti bonds in Ti-MCM-41. The appearance of Ti2 p peaks in the XPS results confirmed the FTIR findings that the Ti was successfully doped into the MCM-41 structure. Zeta（ζ）-potential results indicated that the iso-electric point（IEP） of Ti-MCM-41 was at about pH 3.02. In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline（OTC） at different pH was investigated under Hg lamp irradiation（wavelength 365 nm）. The rate constant（K′obs） for OTC degradation was 0.012 min-1at pH 3. Furthermore, TOC（total organic carbon） and high resolution LC–MS（liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry） analyses were conducted to elucidate the possible intermediate products and degradation pathway for OTC. The TOC removal efficiency of OTC degradation was 87.0%, 74.4% and 50.9% at pH 3, 7 and 10, respectively. LC–MS analysis results showed that the degradation products from OTC resulted from the removal of functional groups from the OTC ring.

Chemical screening reveals Ronidazole is a superior prodrug to Metronidazole for nitroreductase-induced cell ablation system in zebrafish larvae

The Metronidazole(MTZ)/nitroreductase(NTR)-mediated cell ablation system is the most commonly used chemical-genetic cell ablation method in zebrafish. This system can specifically ablate target cells under spatial and temporal control. The MTZ/NTR system has become a widely used cell ablation system in biological, developmental, and functional studies. However, the inadequate cell-ablation ability of some cell types and the side effects of high concentration MTZ impede extensive applications of the MTZ/NTR system. In the present study, the US drug collection library was searched to extend the NTR system. Six MTZ analogs were found, and the cell-ablation ability of these analogs was tested in zebrafish larvae. The results revealed that two of the NTR substrates, Furazolidone and Ronidazole, ablated target cells more efficiently than MTZ at lower concentrations. Furthermore, the working concentration of Ronidazole, but not Furazolidone and MTZ, did not affect axonal bridge formation during spinal cord regeneration. Our results,taken together, indicate that Ronidazole is a superior prodrug to MTZ for the NTR system, especially for the study of neuron regeneration in zebrafish larvae.
