Tree regeneration in gap-understory mosaics in a subtropical Shorea robusta(Sal) forest

Spatial variation in tree-regeneration density is attributed to the specialization of tree species to light availability for germination and *** availability,in turn,varies across the gap-understorey *** gaps provide an important habitat for the regeneration of tree species that would otherwise be suppressed in the *** subtropical forests,there is still a knowledge-gap relating to how canopy disturbances influence tree-regeneration patterns at local scale,and if they disproportionately favor regeneration of certain *** aim to analyze whether canopy gaps promote tree regeneration,and tree species are specialized to gaps or understory for germination and *** sampled vegetation in 128 plots(0.01 ha),equally distributed in gaps and below canopy,in two subtropical Shorea robusta Gaertn.(Sal)forests in nepal,recording the number of tree seedlings and saplings in each *** compared the regeneration density of seedlings and saplings separately between gaps and the *** mean densities of seedlings and saplings were higher in the gaps at both sites;although there was no difference in the seedling density of the majority of the species between the *** species were confined to either gap or understorey at the seedling *** conclude that gaps are not critical for the germination of tree species in Sal forests but these are an important habitat for enabling seedlings to survive into *** classification of trees into regeneration guilds mainly based on germination does not apply to the majority of tree species in subtropical Sal *** results reaffirm that gap creation promotes tree regeneration by favouring seedling survival and growth and can influence forest management for conservation,as well as for plantations.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Sustainability assessment of solar drying systems:a comparative life-cycle analysis of phase-change material-based *** solar dryers

Influence of Accompanying Anions on Potassium Retention and leaching in Potato Growing Alluvial Soils

A column study was carried out to assess the influence of accompanying anions on potassium （K） leaching at potato growing sites with different soil textures （sandy loam and clay loam） in northwestern India. Potassium was applied in the top 15 cm layer of soil column at 30 and 60 mg K kg-1 through different sources having different accompanying anions （CI-, SO^-, nO3 and H2PO4-）. Maximum K was retained in the top 0-15 cm layer with a sharp decrease in K content occurring in 15 30 cm layer of the soil column. The trend was similar for both levels of applied K as well as frequency of leaching and soil type. The decrease of K content in soil column after four leaching events was maximum in case of Khanaura sandy loam, while only minor decrease was observed in Hundowal clay loam when K was applied at 60 mg K kg-1, indicating higher potential of clay rich soil to adsorb K. In general, the K leaching in presence of the accompanying anions followed the order of SO4^2-≤ H2PO42- 〈 nO3 = Cl-. Highest 1 mol·l^-1 CH3COOnH4-extractable K was retained when K was applied along with SO4^2- and H2PO4 anions, and the least was retained when accompanying anion was Cl-. The influence of anions was more pronounced in the light textured soil and at high amounts of K application. Higher levels of K application resulted in higher losses of K, especially in sandy loam soil as observed from the leachate concentration. Among the different K sources, the maximum amount of K leaching was noticed in the soil column amended with KC1. After four leachings, the maximum amount of K leached out was 6.40 mg l-1 in Hundowal clay loam and 9.29 mg l-1 in Khanaura sandy loam at 60 mg K kg-1 of soil application through KC1. These concentrations were lower than the recommended guideline of the World Health Organisation （12.00 mg l-1）.

Assessment of land use change and its effect on soil carbon stock using multitemporal satellite data in semiarid region of Rajasthan, India

Synthesis of CaWO_4:Eu^(3+) phosphor powders via ethylene glycol route and its optical properties

Eu3＋ doped CaWO4 with tetragonal system were prepared at comparatively low temperature （125 ℃） in ethylene glycol medium. The phosphor was further investigated by X-ray difffactometer （XRD）, photoluminescence spectrophotometer （Pl）, Fourier transform infra red （FT-IR） spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. XRD analysis indicated a decrease in the unit cell volume of CaWO4 with increasing Eu3＋ ion concentration. It indicated the homogeneous substitution of Ca2＋ ions in CaWO4 by the Eu3＋ ions. TEM images showed that the particle size ranged from 20 to 200 nm and it could extend the application of the nanoparticles. The photoluminescence study showed that the intensity of electric dipole transition （SD0→TF2） at 614 nm dominated over the magnetic dipole transition （SD0→TFx） at 592 nm. The optimum concentration of Eu3＋ for the highest luminescence was found to be 20 at.%. The as prepared samples were found to be dispersible in water and methanol.
