Gender inequalities in physical activity among adolescents from 64 Global South countries

Purpose:The aims of this study were to(a)describe gender inequalities in physical activity(PA)among adolescents from Global South countries,and(b)investigate the relationship between gender inequalities in PA and contextual factors,such as geographic region,human development index,gender inequality index,and unemployment ***:We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Global School-Based Student Health Survey conducted in Global South countries between 2010 and 2020 among 13-to 17-year-old ***-context variables were retrieved from secondary data sources(World Health Organization,World Bank,and Human Development Reports).PA was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire querying the number of days in the past week in which participants were physically active for a total of at least 60 *** absolute gender inequalities were evaluated by the differences in the prevalence between boys and girls,95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)were estimated using the bootstrap *** inequalities were obtained through Poisson ***-analyses with random effects were used to calculate pooled estimates of absolute and relative ***:Based on 64 Global South countries/surveys,the prevalence of PA was 6.7 percentage points(p.p.)higher in boys than in girls,ranging from 0.5 *** Afghanistan to 15.6 *** laos(I^(2)=85.1%).The pooled ratio for all countries showed that boys presented a PA prevalence 1.58 times higher than girls(95%CI:1.47-1.70)on *** highest absolute and relative inequalities were observed in high income *** with higher Human Development Index rankings and lower Gender Inequality Index rankings also presented greater gender ***:Given that girls are overall less active than boys across the globe,the findings of this study reinforce that macro-and micro-level changes should be actively sought if we aim to increase population levels of PA in adolescents and promote equity i

Synthesis, Characterization, and Study of PlGA Copolymer <i>in Vitro</i>Degradation

The poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), known as PlGA, is one of the main bioreabsorbable polymers used in the field of medicine today. This copolymer is widely applied in sutures, devices geared toward the controlled release of medication, and the guided regeneration of bone tissue as it presents a short degradation time. This work aimed to synthesize the 82/18 PlGA (expressed by the mass ratio of D,l-lactide and glycolide, respectively), to characterize and study the in Vitro degradation in the form of rods in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The copolymer was synthesized by opening the cyclic dimer rings of the monomers D,l-lactide and glycolide, in the presence of the tin octanoate initiator and of the lauryl alcohol co-initiator. The characterization of the copolymer and the follow-up of its in vitro degradation were studied using: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TG), Infrared Molecular Absorption Spectroscopy with Fourier Transform (FTIR), Rheometry, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Through these characterization techniques, it was possible to obtain the glass transition temperature, thermal stability, chemical composition, morphology, and molar mass of both the synthesized and the degraded copolymer. The molar mass of the synthesized copolymer was, approximately, 106 g·mol-1. The degradation rate of PlGA significantly increased from the 19th to the 28th day in PBS. After 28 days in PBS, the glass transition temperature and the molar mass reduced from 45°C to 17°C and from 1.5 × 106 g·mol-1?to 7.5 × 104?g·mol-1, respectively. The pH of the medium has a significant influence on the copolymer degradation profile. When it diminishes, it accelerates the degradation process, resulting in smaller PlGA polymer chains. This pH dependent degradation can be useful for drug release systems.

Metabolic syndrome and colorectal neoplasms:An ominous association

Evaluation of Adverse Events Following Immunization against Rotavirus Regardless of Recommended Age Restriction

Introduction: Mild and moderate Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) against Rotavirus has not received much attention when the vaccine is administered regardless of recommended age restriction. Objectives: To describe the behavior of mild and moderate AEFI in immunized subjects against Rotavirus, in who age restriction period had not been considered. Methods: A case-control study in which we included immunized patients with monovalent oral vaccine against rotavirus and divided them into two groups: 1) Infants who received RV1 vaccine without considering the recommended period, and 2) Infants who were vaccinated with the recommended schedule. Results: From the total doses, 143/1894 (7.5%) were administered outside the restriction period. The most frequent AEFIs with the first dose were purpura, polypnea, and rhinorrhea;For the second dose: purpura, bloody stools, irritability and rhinorrhea. Conclusions: This study shows the benefits from vaccination regardless of age restriction are more beneficial compared to the possible risks of AEFI.
