Evaluation of calcined textile sludge as a stabilizing material for highway soil

The textile industry is a pioneer in the industrialization process in Brazil and is relevant to the Brazilian economy. However, it also generates as operational residue a solid waste,commonly called textile sludge. Pavement construction, which mobilizes large volumes of soil, constitutes an alternative to the reuse of residue, especially when stabilization is involved. The use of stabilized soils with the addition of waste can provide technical,economic and environmentally friendly advantages. This research aimed to study the use of chemical stabilization technique with sludge and three additives(lime, cement and asphalt emulsion) applied in base and subbase of pavements. The scope of this study was divided into four phases, i) characterization tests, ii) physical stabilization, iii) chemical stabilization and determination of heavy metals in the sludge, and iv) addition of 10% of textile sludge and chemical stabilizers(lime, cement, and asphalt emulsion) in amounts of 3%, 5% and 7% as additives in a soil, based on the results obtained in the second phase. Test results indicated that the stabilization of mixtures of soil with textile sludge has the potential to be used in pavement layers(base and subbase). The addition of cement promotes the best chemical stabilization for the sludge. The use of textile sludge stabilization presents greater environmental benefits, given the malfunctions and problems that the incorrect waste disposal can cause to the environment.

Hyperonic neutron stars: reconciliation between nuclear properties and NICER and lIGO/VIRGO results

Using an extended version of quantum hadrodynamics,I propose a new microscopic equation of state(EoS)that is able to correctly reproduce the main properties of symmetric nuclear matter at the saturation density,as well as produce massive neutron stars and satisfactory results for the radius and the tidal parameter.I show that this EoS can reproduce at least a 2.00 solar mass neutron star,even when hyperons are *** constraints about the radius of a 2.00 M_(⊙) and the minimum mass that enables a direct Urea effect are also checked.

The economic, technological, and cultural transformations of our present society influence various scales of our daily lives. In housing, these transformations include changes in the family nucleus and the activities performed in living spaces. Housing flexibility seeks to meet the muitipte needs of users by changing their living spaces and functions. This study aims to explore housing flexibility through a review of relevant literature, discussion of valuable findings, and presentation of a contemporary panorama of the theme. Notions of flexibility are integrated to reinterpret the contemporary sense of dwelling. However, the lack of a well-defined concept of flexibility hinders the integration of methods and theories on the subject.

Effect of increasing densities of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu on Eucalyptus urograndis initial development in silvopastoral system

In silvopasture system, the coexistence of eucalyptus seedlings with other species may result in growth reduction, especially during eucalyptus early ***, studies elucidating how forage species affect the eucalyptus growth can provide important information for their rational management aiming to obtain the maximum gain of the system. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of increasing densities of Urochloa brizantha *** in the early development of Eucalyptus urograndis. An experiment was conducted in 20 l pots, in an open and semi-controlled area, during 90 days after planting of eucalyptus. A completely randomized design with four replications was used, in a 6 9 7 factorial system, meaning six evaluation periods and seven densities of U. brizantha: 0(control), 22, 33, 44, 67, 89 and111 plants m^(-2). Fortnightly, eucalyptus height, stem diameter and chlorophyll fluorescence(Fv/Fm) were evaluated. At the end of experimental period, the net assimilation rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate of eucalyptus plants were determined, in addition to the dry matter of eucalyptus(leaves and stem) and U. brizantha (leaves). In coexistence with 111 plants m^(-2), eucalyptus had reduction of 63.9% on total dry matter and 72.7% on leaf area, compared to the control. From the density of22 plants m^(-2), U. brizantha negatively interfere significantly the growth of E. urograndis. Up to 8 plants m^(-2) there are no reductions greater than 5% in eucalyptus height and stem diameter.

No evidence of HPV DNA in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in a population of Southern Brazil

AIM:To investigate the association between human papillomavirus(HPV)and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in southern ***:We studied 189 esophageal samples from125 patients from three different groups:(1)102 biopsies from 51 patients with ESCC,with one sample from the tumor and another from normal esophageal mucosa distant from the tumor;(2)50 esophageal biopsies from 37 patients with a previous diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC);and(3)37 biopsies from esophageal mucosa with normal appearance from 37 dyspeptic patients,not exposed to smoking or alcohol ***-polymerase chain reaction(PCR)with the MY09/11 and GP5/6 l1primers was used to detect HPV l1 in samples fixed in formalin and stored in paraffin *** PCR reactions were performed with a positive control(cervicovaginal samples),with a negative control(Human Genomic DNA)and with a blank reaction containing all reagents except *** took extreme care to prevent DNA contamination in sample collection,processing,and ***:The histological biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of ESCC in 52 samples(51 from ESCC group and 1 from the HNSCC group)and classified as well differentiated(12/52,23.1%),moderately differentiated(27/52,51.9%)or poorly differentiated(7/52,13.5%).One hundred twenty-eight esophageal biopsies were considered normal(51 from the ESCC group,42 from the HNSCC group and 35 from dyspeptic patients).Nine had esophagitis(7 from the HNSCC and 2 from dyspeptic patients).Of a total of 189 samples,only 6 samples had insufficient material for PCR analysis:1 from mucosa distant from the tumor in a patient with ESCC,3from patients with HNSCC and 2 from patients without *** 183 samples(96.8%)GAPDH,G3PDH and/orβ-globin were amplified,thus indicating the adequacy of the DNA in those *** DNA was negative in all the 183 samples tested:52 with ESCC,9 with esophagitis and 122 with normal esophageal ***:There was no evidence of HP

Cytomegalovirus is the most frequent agent of congenital viral infections,affecting approximately 0.2%-2.4%of live births in different countries[1-7].Universal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborns is not a standard practice considering cost-benefit issues and viabil-ity of diagnostic ***,most newborns are asympto-matic and there is no effective treatment for this population[2-5].

Extramedullary plasmocytoma associated with a massive deposit of amyloid in the duodenum

We report a rare case of extramedullary plasmocytoma associated with a massive deposit of amyloid in the duodenum. A 72-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital presenting with a 3-mo history of epigastric pain, vomiting and weight loss. On computed tomography （CT） a wall thickening of the fourth part of the duodenum was observed. Multiple biopsies obtained from the lesion showed infiltration of plasma cells and lymphocytes, but they were not conclusive. The patient underwent resection of the lesion and, on histopathological examination, the lesion consisted of a dense and diffuse infiltrate of plasma cells and a few admixed lymphocytes with reactive follicles extending to the muscular propria. An extensive deposition of amyloid was also observed. Immunohistochemical stains revealed that a few plasmacytoid cells showed λ light chain staining, though most were κ： light chain positive. These cells also were positive for CD138 and CD56 but negative for CD20 and CD79. The findings were consistent with extramedullary plasmocytoma associated with a massive deposit of amyloid in duodenum. A subsequent workup for multiple myeloma was completely negative. The patient showed no signs of local recurrence or dissemination of the disease after 12 mo follow-up. Because of the association of plasmocytoma and amyloidosis, the patient must be followed up because of the possible systemic involvement of the neoplasm and amyloidosis in future.

The Gurupi Belt,in north-northeastern Brazil,is a mobile belt developed in the south-southwestern margin of the Sao luis cratonic fragment and crops out as a tectonic and erosional window within the Phanerozoic ***,petrographic,geochemical,geochronological,and Nd isotopic information(new and published)constrain the timing and types of magmatic associations present in the belt and the tectonic settings in which they *** Rhyacian was the main period of magmatic activity,which can be grouped into two main stages.(1)~2185-2130 Ma:pre-collisional,juvenile,calc-alkaline magnesian and calcic ferroan granitoid suites,and minor calc-alkaline and tholeiitic mafic plutonism(now amphibolites),formed in intra-oceanic to transitional/continental arcs;and intra-or back-arc volcano-sedimentary basin.(2)~2125-2070 Ma:syn-(two-mica granites)to late-collisional(potassic to shoshonitic granites and quartz-syenite)plutonic suites produced after crustal thickening and melting,with localized migmatization,that intruded during the compressive D1 deformational phase and concomitantly with greenschist to amphibolite *** is a zonation of the Rhyacian episodes,with intra-oceanic stages occurring to the northeast,and the continental arc and collisional phases occurring to the southwest,indicating the presence of an active continental margin to the southwest,and subduction from NE to SW(present-day configuration).This magmatic framework is a continuation to the south of what is described for the Sao luis cratonic fragment to the north,and the orogenic scenario is identical to what is observed for the same period in the West African Craton(Eburnean/Birrimian orogen),which additionally supports previous geological *** the Neoproterozoic,a few magmatic occurrences are *** extensional event allowed the intrusion of an anorogenic,nepheline syenite at ca.730 Ma,which was followed by the intrusion of a crustal,calc-alkaline microtonalite,of uncertain

Gastric cancer in a Caucasian population: Role of pepsinogen C genetic variants

AIM： To study the role of an insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C （PGC） gene, an effective marker for terminal differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibility to the development of gastric lesions. METHODS： The study was performed with 99 samples of known gastric lesions and 127 samples without evidence of neoplastic disease. PCR was employed and the 6 polymorphic alleles were amplified： Allele 1 （510 bp）, Allele 2 （480 bp）, Allele 3/4 （450/460 bp）, Allele 5 （400 bp） and Allele 6 （310 bp）. RESUlTS： Our results revealed that Allele 6 carriers seemed to have protection against the development of any gastric lesion （OR = 0.34; P 〈 0.001）, non-dysplastic lesions associated with gastric adenocarcinoma such as atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （OR = 0.28; P 〈 0.001） or invasive GC （OR = 0.39; P = 0.004）. CONClUSION： Our study reveals that the Allele 6 carrier status has a protective role in the development of gastric lesions, probably due to its association with higher expression of PGC. Moreover, the frequency of Allele 6 carriers in the control group is far higher than that obtained in Asian populations, which might represent a genetic gap between Caucasian and Asian populations.
