Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). however, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Associations of sense of coherence with psychological distress and quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To investigate the relationship between sense of coherence,psychological distress and health related quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METhODS:This cross-sectional study enrolled a consecutive sample of 147 IBD(aged 45.1 ± 14.1 years; 57.1% female) patients recruited from a tertiary gastroenterology ***-four participants met diagnostic criteria for Crohn's disease,while eightythree patients had ulcerative ***-demographic data(education,age,race,gender,gross monthly income and marital status),disease-related variables(illness activity,relapse rate in past 2 years,history of surgery and time since diagnosis),sense of coherence(Antonovsky's SOC scale),psychological distress symptoms(hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and health-related quality of life(hRQo l; WhOQOlBref) were *** multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors that are independently associated with psychological distress and hRQo l in patients with IBD and to provide indications for possible moderating or mediating *** addition,formal moderation and mediation analyses(Sobel tests) were performed to confirm potential moderators/mediators of the relationship between SOC,psychological distress symptoms and ***:lower SOC scores(std beta=-0.504; P female gender(std beta = 0.176; P = 0.021) and White race(std beta = 0.164; P = 0.033) were independently associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms,while lower levels of SOC(std beta =-0.438; P higher relapse rate(std beta = 0.161; P = 0.033) were independently associated with more severe anxiety symptoms.A significant interaction between time since diagnosis and SOC was found with regard to the severity of depressive or anxiety symptoms,as the interaction term(time since diagnosis X SOC) had beta coefficients of-0.191(P = 0.009) and-0.172(P = 0.026),*** levels of anxiety symptoms(std beta =-0.369; P higher levels

laser directed energy deposition(DED)involves complex physical processes,and the trial and error examinations are time consuming and cost *** research paradigm can be reshaped using advanced phenomenological models via computing the spatiotemporal variations of the build *** this work,multi-layer and multi-track laser DED of Ti-6 Al-4 V were systematically explored on multiple scales including the 1D track,the 2D layer and the 3D full build considering the complex transport of energy,mass,and momentum in the moving freeform molten *** results showed that convex,nearflat,and wavy builds were generated using gradually larger hatch *** profiles of individual tracks and layers were extracted through the unique advantages of the *** individual tracks exhibited various patterns and rotated with specific inclinations to form distinct layer *** net increments of the deposit generated upon the printing of a new track during the continuous deposition process showed that the smaller hatch spacing caused higher overlap rate of horizontally adjacent tracks but lower remelting rate of vertically adjacent tracks in neighboring *** 3D numerical model was validated with corresponding experiments for various process *** scientific findings can provide useful insights for further researches of DED.

Rapid Growth of TiNi intermetallic compound within undercooled Ti_(50)Ni_(50)alloy under electrostatic levitation condition

The undercooling dependence of the solidification mechanism was systematically explored by the electrostatic levitation(ESl)*** the experiments,the maximum undercooling reached up to 406 K(0.26 T_l)and the growth velocity of the primary TiNi phase was in-situ determined at various *** the initial increase of alloy undercooling,the value of growth velocity sluggishly rose followed by a power *** this case,the primary TiNi phase preferentially developed as the equiaxed dendrite,then the remnant liquid participated as Ti_(2)Ni andα-Ti phases on the grain *** the undercooling exceeded the critical value of 350 K,the growth velocity of the primary phase displayed a sharply increase ***,the TEM results demonstrated that the precipitation of the intermetallic Ti_(2)Ni compound was gradually restrained during the rapid solidification and the R-phase existing in the TiNi matrix at large undercooling implied that the martensitic transformation was incomplete.

Trans-scale mechanics: looking for the missing links between continuum and micro/nanoscopic reality

Problems involving coupled multiple space and time scales offer a real challenge for conventional frame-works of either particle or continuum mechanics. In this paper, four cases studies （shear band formation in bulk metallic glasses, spallation resulting from stress wave, interaction between a probe tip and sample, the simulation of nanoindentation with molecular statistical thermodynamics） are provided to illustrate the three levels of trans-scale problems （problems due to various physical mechanisms at macro-level, problems due to micro-structural evolution at macro/micro-level, problems due to the coupling of atoms/ molecules and a finite size body at micro/nano-level） and their formulations. Accordingly, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, coupled trans-scale equations and simultaneous solutions, and trans-scale algorithms based on atomic/molecular interaction are suggested as the three possible modes of trans-scale mechanics.

Diameter-dependent in vitro performance of biodegradable pure zinc wires for suture application

In this study, biodegradable pure zinc wires with 3.0 mm and 0.3 mm in diameter were prepared via hot-extrusion and subsequent cold-drawing process respectively. The microstructure, mechanical performance, corrosion behavior, in vitro cytocompatibility and antibacterial effect were comparatively *** cold-drawing, the mechanical property, especially the elongation of the ф0.3 mm pure Zn wire was improved significantly compared with the ф3.0 mm pure Zn wire. The in vitro corrosion study including immersion and electrochemical test showed acceptable corrosion resistance of these two materials in hank's solution. The in vitro human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells(hUVECs) viability assay showed obviously different results, in which the ф0.3 mm pure Zn wire demonstrated favorable cytocompatibility, while the ф3.0 mm wire exhibited severe cytotoxic effect with 100% extract concentration. Both of them exhibited partly antibacterial effect on S. aureus. These results demonstrated the feasibility of the prepared 0.3 mm pure Zn wire as the potential suture material with good absorbability.

Iterative techniques for solving optimal control systems governed by parabolic varia-tional inequalities are presented. The techniques we use are based on linear finite elements method to approximate the state equations and nonlinear conjugate gradient methods to solve the discrete optimal control problem. Convergence results and numerical experiments are presented.
