Effects of synthetic site water on bentonite-concrete system for a potential nuclear waste repository

In high-level nuclear waste(HlW)repositories,concrete and compacted bentonite are designed to be employed as buffer materials,which may raise a problem of interactions between concrete and *** interactions would lead to mineralogy transformation and buffer performance decay of bentonite under the near field environment conditions in a repository.A small-scale experimental setup was established to simulate the concrete-bentonite-site water interaction system from a potential nuclear waste repository in *** types of mortars were prepared to correspond to the concrete at different degradation *** results permit the determination of the following:(1)The macroproperties of Gaomiaozi(GMZ)bentonite(*** pressure,permeability,the final dry density,and water content of reacted samples);(2)The composition evolution of fluids from the synthetic site water-concrete-bentonite interaction systems;(3)The sample characterization including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and X-ray powder diffraction(XRD).Under the infiltration of the synthesis Beishan site water(BSW),the swelling pressure of bentonite decreases slowly with time after reaching its second swelling *** flux decreases with time during the infiltrations,and it tends to be stable after more than 120 *** to the cation exchange reactions in the BSW-concrete-bentonite systems,the divalent cations(Ca and Mg)were consumed,and the monovalent cations(Na and K)were *** dissolution of minerals in the bentonite such as albite causes Si increasing in the pore *** was concluded that the hydro-mechanical property degradation of bentonite takes place when it comes into contact with concrete mortar,even under low-pH groundwater *** soil dispersion,the uneven water content,and the uneven dry density in bentonite samples may partly contribute to the swelling decay of ***,the direct contact with concrete has an obvious effect on the performance

Electroacupuncture activates AMPKa1 to improve learning and memory in the APP/PS1 mouse model of early Alzheimer's disease by regulating hippocampal mitochondrial dynamics

Objective: Studies have shown that electroacupuncture(EA) can alleviate cognitive impairments from Alzheimer's disease(AD) by regulating the expression of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK), but the specific mechanism involved remains to be elucidated. Therefore, this study explores the potential mechanism by which EA improves cognitive function from the perspective of mitochondrial ***: The four-month-old transgenic mice with amyloid precursor protein(APP)/presenilin 1(PS1)and AMPKa1-subunit conditional knockout(AMPKa1-cKO) were used for experiments. To evaluate the effects of EA treatment on cognitive function, the T-maze and Morris water maze were used. In addition,chemical exchange saturation transfer, thioflavin staining, transmission electron microscopy, mitochondrial membrane potential, and Western blotting were used to examine the potential mechanisms underlying the effects of EA on APP/PS1 ***: Both APP/PS1 mice and AMPKa1-cKO mice exhibited dysfunction in mitochondrial dynamics accompanied by learning and memory impairment. Inactivation of the AMPK/peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor-γ coactivator-1a(PGC-1a) pathway increased pathological amyloid-β(Aβ) deposition and aggravated the dysfunction in mitochondrial dynamics. In addition, EA rescued learning and memory deficits in APP/PS1 mice by activating the AMPK/PGC-1a pathway, specifically by reducing pathological Aβ deposition, normalizing energy metabolism, protecting the structure and function of mitochondria,increasing the levels of mitochondrial fusion proteins, and downregulating the expression of fission proteins. However, the therapeutic effect of EA on cognition in APP/PS1 mice was hindered by ***: The regulation of hippocampal mitochondrial dynamics and reduction in Aβ deposition via the AMPK/PGC-1a pathway are critical for the ability of EA to ameliorate cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 mice.

A Room-Temperature Chloride-Conducting Metal-Organic Crystal[Al(DMSO)_(6)]Cl_(3) for Potential Solid-State Chloride-Shuttle Batteries

The growing demand for substitutes of lithium chemistries in battery leads to a surge in budding novel anion-based electrochemical energy storage,where the chloride ion batteries(CIBs)take over the *** application of CIBs is limited by the dissolution and side reaction of chloride-based electrode materials in a liquid *** the flipside,its solid-state electrolytes are scarcely reported due to the challenge in realizing fast Cl^(-)*** present study reports[Al(DMSO)_(6)]Cl_(3),a solid-state metal-organic material,allows chloride ion *** strong Al-Cl bonds in AlCl_(3)are broken down after coordinating of Al^(3+)by ligand DMSO,and Cl^(-)in the resulting compound is weakly bound to complexions[Al(DMSO)_(6)]^(3+),which may facilitate Cl^(-)*** partial replacement of Cl^(-)with PF_(6)^(-),the room-temperature ionic conductivity of as-prepared electrolyte is increased by one order of magnitude from 2.172×10^(-5)S cm^(-1)to 2.012×10^(-4)S cm^(-1).When they are assembled with Ag(anode)/Ag-AgCl(cathode)electrode system,reversible electrochemical redox reactions occur on both sides,demonstrating its potential for solid-state chloride ion *** strategy by weakening the bonding interaction using organic ligands between Cl^(-)and central metallic ions may provide new ideas for developing solid chloride-ion conductors.

Complete transverse injury of peripheral nerves is challenging to *** secreted by human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells are considered to play an important role in intercellular communication and regulate tissue *** previous studies,a collagen/hyaluronic acid sponge was shown to provide a suitable regeneration environment for Schwann cell proliferation and to promote axonal *** three-dimensional(3D)composite conduit contains a collagen/hyaluronic acid inner sponge enclosed in an electrospun hollow poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)***,whether there is a synergy between the 3D composite conduit and exosomes in the repair of peripheral nerve injury remains *** this study,we tested a comprehensive strategy for repairing long-gap(10 mm)peripheral nerve injury that combined the 3D composite conduit with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived *** effectiveness was evaluated by sciatic functional index,sciatic nerve compound muscle action potential recording,recovery of muscle mass,measuring the cross-sectional area of the muscle fiber,Masson trichrome staining,and transmission electron microscopy of the regenerated nerve in *** results showed that transplantation of the 3D composite conduit loaded with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes promoted peripheral nerve regeneration and restoration of motor function,similar to autograft *** CD31-positive endothelial cells were observed in the regenerated nerve after transplantation of the loaded conduit than after transplantation of the conduit without exosomes,which may have contributed to the observed increase in axon regeneration and distal nerve ***,the use of a 3D composite conduit loaded with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes represents a promising cell-free therapeutic option for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury.

Effect of Acupuncture on Endometrial Blood Flow in Women Undergoing in vitro Fertilization Embryo Transfer: A Single Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: To evaluate the effect of manual acupuncture on endometrial blood flow parameters by three-dimensional(3D) power Doppler ultrasound in women undergoing in vitro fertilization embryo transfer(IVF-ET). Methods: Seventy patients undergoing IVF-ET were equally randomized into traditional or sham acupuncture treatment group for totally 4 days(from the day of oocyte aspiration to the day of embryo transfer) of treatment by random envelope method at the Reproductive Medicine Center and Outpatient Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medicine College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 2013 to December 2015. Patients in the traditional acupuncture group accepted traditional acupuncture methods with manual acupuncture, and Zhongji(CV3), Qihai(CV 6), Sanyinjiao(SP6), Taichong(lR 3), Tianshu(ST 25), Guilai(ST 29) and Zusanli(ST 36) were chosen. Patients at the sham acupuncture group accepted shallow acupuncture methods at 4 non-meridian points at each shoulder and upper arm. Outcome measures included endometrial ultrasonic indices such as vascularization index(VI), flow index(FI) and vascularization flow index(VFI), endometrial thickness and volume, subendometrial VI(sVI), subendometrial FI(sFI), subendometrial VFI(sVFI), implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, live birth rate and number of live births. Results: Finally, 34 patients in the traditional acupuncture group and 35 in the sham acupuncture group completed this trial. VI, FI and VFI of the traditional acupuncture group were significantly higher than those in the sham acupuncture group(Pl thickness, endometrial volume, sVI, sFI, sVFI, implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, live birth rate and number of live births(P>0.05).
