linking the spatiotemporal variation of litterfall to standing vegetation biomass in Brazilian savannas

Aims litterfall at a global scale is affected by climate,edaphic features and vegetation structure,with litter production increasing from grasslands to forests following the rise in standing ***,at landscape scales,the same relationship between litter production and vegetation structure has rarely been studied and comparisons of litterfall patterns between adjacent,structurally distinct communities are ***,we use a standardized methodology to describe the structural differences among four savanna physiognomies and analyze their relationship with changes in litterfall across the *** We evaluated the woody vegetation structure and composition in 48 sites,equally distributed across four physiognomies and monitored the monthly litter production from April 2014 to March *** Findings Results showed that the density,basal area,cylindrical volume and aboveground biomass of woody vegetation differ among physiognomies,increasing consistently from cerrado ralo,cerrado típico,cerrado denso and cerradã***,we found a strong and positive relationship between aboveground biomass and annual litter production,with litter yield increasing from 0.9 to 8.4 Mg ha^(−1)across different physiognomies,following the increment in vegetation *** production was seasonal and similar among vegetation types,increasing during the dry *** comprised the dominant fraction(approx.85%)and litterfall seasonality primarily resulted from the concentration of leaf shedding during dry ***,the temporal pattern of litterfall throughout the year showed a gradual reduction in the seasonality from open to closed vegetation types,likely following the decrease of deciduous species abundance in the plant *** results showed that changes in vegetation structure may affect spatial and temporal litterfall patterns in different physiognomies,which co-occur across the Cerrado landscape,with potential implications for the overall f

Evaluation of Milk Compositional Quality and Mammary Gland Health of dairy Herds in the Southwestern Brazilian Amazon

Samples of raw milk from bulk cooling tanks were collected in five municipalities of the Southwestern Brazilian Amazon to establish the prevalence of Staphylococcus aueus and Streptococcus agalactiae, as well as to evaluate the milk composition and its correlation with the bulk tank somatic cell count (BTSCC). A total of 250 samples were collected to investigate the causal agents of bovine mastitis in whole milk, from 50 bulk milk tanks in each municipality. Under laboratory conditions, the samples were diluted to 1/10 and 1/100, and samples of 0.1 ml from each dilution were plated in triplicate on selective media for Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae. To evaluate the correlation between the major milk components (fat, protein and lactose) and the BTSCC, samples were collected for 18 months from 73 dairy herds. The presence of the above-mentioned contagious mastitis pathogens was detected in 97.2% (243/250) of refrigerated raw milk samples evaluated. Analysis of the major milk components and BTSCC demonstrated that during the study period, fat compo-nent showed the largest variance, followed by protein and lactose, which also showed significant variances.

BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,l-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

To evaluate the characteristics and synthesis activity of osteoblasts extracted from the calvaria of offspring of rats exposed to maternal *** adult Wistar rats were divided into two groups,one control and one treated with daily administration of l-thyroxine by an orogastric tube(50μg/animal/day)during *** days after delivery and confirmation of the mothers’hyperthyroidism,the offspring were euthanized for the extraction of osteoblasts from the *** 7,14,and 21 days,proliferation activity was assessed using MTT assay,while alkaline phosphatase(AlP)activity was assessed by the BCIP/NBT *** 21 days,the total area of the mineralized matrix stained by von Kossa was evaluated by *** expression of gene transcripts for Runx2,Bmp2,Fgfr1,collagen type 1(Col1),osteocalcin(Oc),and osteopontin(Op)were evaluated by real-time *** were compared using the Student’s *** activity was significantly higher at 14 and 21 days in cultures of osteoblasts extracted from offspring exposed to maternal hyperthyroidism,while MTT conversion was significantly lower at 21 days in this *** cultures of neonates exposed to maternal hyperthyroidism also showed a larger total area of mineralized matrix and greater expression of gene transcripts for Oc and *** hyperthyroidism increases the activity of matrix synthesis,alkaline phosphatase activity,and expression of gene transcripts for osteocalcin and osteopontin in the osteoblasts,extracted from the calvaria of the offspring,which may be one of the mechanisms of premature fusion of cranial sutures.

Background: Yeasts from the genus Cryptococcus (species C. neoformans and C. gattii) are opportunistic pathogens that afflict humans with low immunity caused by diseases such as AIDS or by the usage of immunosuppressive drugs. It is a fatal disease that has been studied around the whole world and its most fatal form is the brain cryptococcosis. Purpose: The present review describes the disease from pathogen isolation, the various clinical presentations of the disease, the most important virulence factors of yeast in human and animal model and their clinical issues. Methods: On this review, several published studies about the disease are presented. Results: Numerous researches have been done worldwide in order to find a kind of therapy that is more effective against the disease. Amphotericin B, in all forms is still the drug of choice in the treatment of the cryptococcosis. Fluconazole, as well as voriconazole in combination with amphotericin B, is recommended in the cases of treatment failure. Conclusion: This study presented has elucidated a little more about the disease. Further studies should be conducted to find more diagnoses that are accurate as well as more effective treatments for eradicating the disease. In this study, the bibliographic survey makes reference to the world literature;with regard to ecology, taxonomy, mains factors related to virulence, the clinical manifestations, the action of antifungal drugs and histopathological analysis used in an animal model, were the objectives deleterious aspects of this study, thus informing, in a simple way, the importance of this microorganism for research and researchers working with this global disease, called Cryptococcosis.

Enhancing Smart Grid with Session-Oriented Communication System to Truly Support Reliability and Robustness

Environmental sustainability issues and the costs of new power generation and transmission have increased the interest in evolving current power grid to new technologies. The Smart Grid is a promising technology, since it allows a distributed computing approach with potentials for self-diagnosing/-healing, reliable multi-user communication and fast hard real-time control. However, the missing standardization associated with heterogeneity of legacy systems and wide-area service demands, makes very challenging to adopt Smart Grid in a cost-effective way. By considering this, we propose the Session-Oriented Communication System (SOCSys) to overcome the above issues by enhancing Smart Grid with truly reliable and robust capabilities over heterogeneous environments. SOCSys achieves this goal by orchestrating session-control with innovative network-centric facilities operating over a wireless mesh Information Network compliant with IEEE 802.11e/s standard. The simulation results show that SOCSys improved network performance in terms of bandwidth utilization and minimization of delay, while consuming low network resources. Graphical analyses showed that SOCSys supported multimedia sessions with excellent quality, where it outperforms the experiments with regular settings.

Physical Properties and Heat Transfer of Tectona grandis l.f. Wood

Tectona grandis l.f. （teak） is native to the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, and today is grown in almost every tropical region, for the physical and mechanical properties of its wood. Also, important qualitative aspects render it one of the most expensive wood species in the world. This work presents a study about the physical properties and heat transfer of T. grandis wood from plantations in ***, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Six trees planted at three different intervals were used--two from each planting density--selected at random and with good phytosanitary characteristics, as well as having representative diameters and heights. The following properties were determined： basic and apparent densities, volume contraction, heat transfer and fiber saturation point. The basic and apparent mean general density of the samples was 0.48 g/cm3 and 0.55 g/cm3, respectively. The mean volume contraction of the teak wood was 8.57%. With decreased levels of wood humidity, loss of volume and planting effects were not significant at 5% probability. Mean heat transfer was 7.3 h/cm and the wood fiber saturation point was 17.25%, below the range found in literature, and there was no influence of the planting density on this property. According to the results, it was concluded that planting density significantly influenced the base density of the wood; the same effect does not occur for the other physical properties, and with respect to heat transfer, the wood was considered difficult to dry.

Growth and Development of Bell Peppers Submitted to Fertilization with Biochar and Nitrogen

The experiment was carried out in the greenhouse of the DEAg/UFCG, Campina Grande (PB), Brazil, to evaluate the growth and development of the bell pepper subjected to fertilization with biochar and nitrogen. The experiment was conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, in 4 × 4 factorial scheme, relative to four doses of biochar (0;7;14 and 21 m3⋅ha−1) and four doses of nitrogen (0;40;80 and 120 kg⋅ha−1), with three replicates. Considering the analysis of growth of bell pepper plants during the first 45 daS, is recommended the average dose of biochar of 19 m3⋅ha−1 on vegetable behavior. Under the conditions of the experiment, nitrogen favored only the absolute growth rate of plant height and the stem diameter.
