Peripheral.nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transpl.nts for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central.necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabl.ng the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transpl.nts in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal.neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transpl.nts and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Flow and Heat Transfer Instability of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide in a Vertical Heated Tube

Supercritical carbon dioxide(S-CO_(2))is one of the most promising working fluids in energy conversion ***,the instability of the flow and heat transfer has caused great harm to the security of energy conversion *** this work,a transient model based on the Finite Volume Method is set up to investigate the flow and heat transfer instability of CO_(2) changing from a subcritical state to a supercritical state in a vertical heated circular *** instability occurs when the wall heat flux is higher than a critical value,which makes the density and mass flow rate variations large enough.A large variation of the density triggers self-sustained oscillations in the *** critical heat flux heightens with the higher inlet pressure and pressure drop,larger tube diameter,and lower inlet temperature,but it reduces with the l.ngthening of the *** reflect the density-variation degree for the corresponding heat flux,a dimensionless number n_(tpc)=qπDl/Mβ_(pc)(p)/C_(p,pc)(p)(trans-pseudocritical.number)is *** critical trans-pseudocritical.number ntpc,c first goes up and down with the increase of the inlet pressure and the reduction of the inlet *** rise of the mass flow rate,the shortening of the tube l.ngth,and the enlargement of the tube diameter all induce the temperature difference al.ng the radial direction to become *** tendencies make the critical.ntpc,c ***,the stability boundary n_(tpc,c)=48.47(n_(psc))^(1.048)(Δp∗)^(0.359)(D/l)^(−0.026)(G∗)^(−0.335)(ρ∗)^(2.666) is obtained to distinguish the regions of the flow and heat transfer stability and instability.

Seed traits and taxonomic relationships determine the occurrence of mutualisms versus seed predation in a tropical forest rodent and seed dispersal system

Although many studies have been carried out on pl.nt-animal mutualistic assemblages,the roles of functional traits and taxonomy in determining both whether interactions involve mutualisms or predation and the structure of such assemblages are *** used semi-natural enclosures to quantitatively assess the interaction strengths between seeds of 8 sympatric tree species and 4 rodent species in a tropical forest in Xishuangbanna,Yunnan,Southwest *** found 2 clusters of species in the seed-rodent network represented by 2 genera in the Fagaceae(Castanopsis,lithocarpus).Compared to seeds of 3 Castanopsis species,seeds with heavy weight,hard coat or caloric content(including 3 lithocarpus species)were eaten less and more frequently hoarded by *** turn,hoarded seeds showed less predation and more mutualism with *** results suggest that seed traits significantly affected the hoarding behavior of rodents,and,consequently,the occurrence of mutualisms and predation as well as assemblage structure in the pl.nt-animal seed dispersal ***nomically-related species with similar seed traits as functional groups bel.ng to the same substructures in the *** results indicate that both seed traits and taxonomic relationships may simplify thinking about seed dispersal systems by helping to elucidate whether interactions are likely to be dominated by predation or mutualism.

Si-DlC films deposited by a novel method equipped with a co-potential auxiliary cathode for anti-corrosion and anti-wear application

Rechargeable lithium metal batteries(RlMBs)have been regarded as promising successors for contemporary lithium-ion batteries,in view of their high gravimetric and volumetric energy *** non-aqueous liquid electrolytes containing organic carbonate solvents possess high chemical reactivities with metallic lithium anode and high flammability,which induces considerable safety threats under extreme conditions(e.g.,overcharging and thermal runaway).Herein,we propose the utilization of fluorinated sulfonamide(i.e.,n,n-dimethyl fluorosulfonamide(DMFSA))as solvent,together with lithium(fluorosulfonyl)(n-nonafluorobutanesulfonyl)imide(liFnFSI)as co-salt and/or electrolyte additive for accessing safer and highperforming *** physical(e.g.,thermal transition,viscosity,and ionic conductivity)and electrochemical(e.g.,anodic stability on different electrodes)characterizations have been performed,aiming to reveal the inherent characteristics of the sulfonamide-based electrolytes and the particular role of liFnFSI on the stabilization of liCoO_(2) *** has been demonstrated that the sulfonamide-based electrolytes exhibit superior flame-retardant abilities and decent ionic conductivities(>1 mS·cm^(-1)at room temperature).The incorporation of liFnFSI as co-salt and/or electrolyte additive could significantly suppress the side reactions occurring at the cathode compartment,through the preferential decompositions of the *** work is anticipated to give an in-depth understanding on the working mechanism of liFnFSI in the sulfonamide-based electrolytes,and also spurs the development of high-energy and safer RlMBs.

Cobalt-embedded 3D conductive honeycomb architecture to enable high-sulphur-loading li-S batteries under lean electrolyte conditions

High sulphur loading and lean electrolyte conditions are important to achieve the high theoretical energy density of lithiumsulphur(li-S)***,serious problems such as low sulphur utilization and fast capacity fade are typically experienced under low electrolyte/sulphur(E/S)ratios and high sulphur loading *** address these issues,a cobaltcontaining three-dimensional conductive honeycomb(Co@n-HPC)is proposed in this work as a material for sulphur *** good electrical conductivity and high density of catalytic sites of(Co@n-HPC)allow fast redox kinetics of lithium polysulfide(liPS)in high-sulphur-loading *** addition,the hierarchical structure and good wettability by the electrolyte of Co@nHPC facilitates electrolyte penetration and liPS conversion,leading to a high utilization of sulphur under lean electrolyte ***,at a current density of 0.2 C,a volumetric capacity of 1,410 mAh·cm^(−3)was attained with a sulphur loading of 5.1 mg·cm^(−2)and an E/S ratio of 5μl·mg^(−1).This work provides ideas for the development of lean electrolyte li-S batteries with a high sulphur loading.
