Forest dynamics is highly relevant to a broad range of earth science studies,many of which have geographic coverage ranging from regional to global *** the temporally dense landsat acquisitions available in many regions provide a unique opportunity for understanding forest disturbance history dating back to 1972,large quantities of landsat images will need to be analysed for studies at regional to global *** will not only require effective change detection algorithms,but also highly automated,high level preprocessing capabilities to produce images with subpixel geolocation accuracies and best achievable radiometric consistency,a status called imagery-ready-to-use(IRU).This paper describes a streamlined approach for producing IRU quality landsat time series stacks(lTSS).This approach consists of an image selection protocol,high level preprocessing algorithms and IRU quality verification *** high level preprocessing algorithms include updated radiometric calibration and atmospheric correction for calculating surface reflectance and precision registration and orthorectification routines for improving geolocation *** automated routines have been implemented in the landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive System(lEDAPS)designed for processing large quantities of landsat *** characteristics of the lTSS developed using this approach are discussed.

Effect of Microwave Athermal and Thermal Radiation in Wastewater Sludge Properties

Samples of thickened waste activated sludge （TWAS） at two different concentrations were exposed to microwave radiation. Some of the samples were not allowed to heat up, to study the athermal effect of microwaves. The samples exposed to microwaves where their temperature was allowed to increase showed a higher degree of chemical oxygen demand （COD）, protein and carbohydrate solubilization compared to a control. The size distribution of particles was changed after exposure of TWAS to microwaves. These results were also observed in the samples exposed to microwaves but kept at a constant temperature, suggesting the occurrence of a microwave athermal effect. Thermally （samples experiencing a temperature increase） and athermally （samples that were maintained at ambient temperature） microwaved subsequent anaerobic biodegradation. samples produced more methane than the non-microwaved controls in

Pattern of Dermatophytes Isolated in the Medical Microbiology laboratory of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria

Dermatophytoses are the most common dermatological conditions but they are however not life threatening or debilitating hence medical care is sought usually due to aesthetic reasons and chronicity of the lesions despite several self-medications. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution pattern of dermatophytes isolated in the medical microbiology laboratory of University of Port Harcourt teaching hospital (UPTH). This is a 5-year desk review of the Dermatophytes isolated in the medical microbiology laboratory of UPTH. Relevant Patients’ data were retrieved and analyzed. A total of seventy (70) dermatophytes were isolated over the five-year period as follows: Trichophyton species accounted for 55 (79%), Epidermophyton species were 8 (11%) and Microsporum species 7 (10%). The peak age range of patients from which dermatophytes were isolated was 31 - 40 years with a male to female ratio of 1:1.7. The majority of patients being 49 (70%) were referred from the dermatology outpatient clinic (DOPC) and the most frequent clinical diagnosis was Tinea corporis. Trichophyton species were the commonest cause of dermatophytoses in adult patients in Port Harcourt where the most common clinical presentation was Tinea corporis.

利用均一化的中国近百年气温观测数据,结合英国East Anglia大学气候研究中心(CRU)的CRUTEM3气温数据集中中国周边国家长序列资料对20世纪前50年资料进行了补充,研制了中国及周边地区近百年逐月5°×5°气温网格数据集,并综合系统考虑了该气温数据集中存在的3类误差(台站误差、抽样误差和偏差误差)导致的不确定性水平,重新构建了近百年全国气温变化序列,并给出了各种不确定性水平,得出了近百年中国气温变化的最新估计.基于上述数据集系统性地对中国近100年地表气温变化趋势进行了重新估计.结果显示:1900～2006年中国气温变化速度为(0.09±0.017)℃/10a;冬季最大,为(0.14±0.021)℃/10a;夏季最小为(0.04±0.017)℃/10a;春季为(0.11±0.021)℃/10a;秋季为(0.07±0.017)℃/10a.近50年(1954～2006年)气温增暖趋势约为(0.26±0.032)℃/10a,近30年(1979～2006年)增暖趋势为(0.45±0.13)℃/10a,气温增暖速率呈明显加剧趋势,值得引起注意.从地理分布上来看,东北、西北和华北地区的增暖幅度最为明显,而西南、华南地区增暖幅度最小,这种变化在近100,50和30年具有较好的一致性.

Prevalence of hyponatremia in acute medical admissions in tropical Asia Pacific Australia

Objective:To determine prevalence of hyponatremia in acute medical admissions in Northern ***:We studied 469 consecutive acute medical admissions to a hospital in Australia's Far North Queensland during the colder months of June and July *** of hyponatremia and its relationship with gender,age,diagnosis and prognosis in acute medical admissions were ***:On admission,hyponatremia(plasma sodiuml/l)was present in 39.4%of patients,with mild(130—135 mmol/l),moderate(126-129 mmol/l)and severe?126 mmol/l)hyponatremia being present in 25.2%,10.7*and 3.6****,adding together admission hyponatremia with that developing during admission,45.2%of patients were affected with 11.5%moderate hyponatremia cases and 4.1%severe *** and hyperkalemia were present in 17.0%and 18.1*,***,275/469 patients(58.6*)presented with an electrolyte *** were significant correlations of hyponatremia with age but not with gender and in-hospital *** of hyponatremia was high across all diagnostic ***:The prevalence of hyponatremia appears to be high in the tropical North Australian population,being the highest prevalence reported amongst acute hospital *** previously reported correlations with age and mortality do appear to hold good for this population with a high prevalence of electrolyte *** prospective analysis on a larger population in the area is needed to confirm our findings.

Affinity Crosslinking of Y1036 to Nerve Growth Factor Identifies Pharmacological Targeting Domain for Small Molecule Neurotrophin Antagonists

Classically, small molecule antagonists have targeted membrane bound receptors and intracellular enzyme targets. While this drug discovery strategy is extremely successful, the number of new chemical entities in the pharmaceutical pipeline is diminishing and complementary strategies are in need. A particularly attractive therapeutic strategy is to neutralize soluble signalling proteins using small molecules. Small molecule-based technologies have the potential to sufficiently alter the molecular topology of a given ligand and inhibit ligand/receptor interactions—effectively neutralizing the ligand’s signalling capacity. Recent technical advances in the field of structural biology have enabled the elucidation of ligand/receptor complexes at atomic resolution enabling a detailed appreciation of the molecular interactions governing ligand-mediated receptor activation. Exploiting molecular modeling techniques to study these signalling complexes allows for a paradigm shift from “receptorcentric” to “ligandcentric” screening strategies. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a prototypical protein signalling ligand, which binds two receptors, TrkA and p75NTR. We first explore the molecular landscape governing the ligand/receptor interactions of NGF/TrkA and NGF/p75 structures. Next, we use the recently reported NGF neutralizing small-molecule, Y1036, as an affinity probe to determine residues in proximity to the pharmacological targeting domain of NGF and perform theoretical docking experiments to predict the residues which comprise distinct pharmacological targeting domains on the surface of NGF. Exploiting such strategies may facilitate “ligandcentric” drug discovery and could further the development of a trophic-factor-selective compound such as a BDNF-selective antagonist.

Petrography and chronology of lunar meteorite Northwest Africa 6950

Northwest Africa(NWA) 6950 is an olivine-gabbro lunar meteorite that has a distinctly different petrographic texture from other lunar basalts. In this contribution, we report the petrography, mineralogy,and U-Pb geochronology of baddeleyite and phosphate in this lunar meteorite and make a comparison with other NWA 773 paired meteorites. NWA 6950 consists mainly of coarse-grained olivine, pyroxene,and plagioclase, with minor ilmenite, chromite, troilite, baddeleyite, taenite, and apatite. The abundant rounded to euhedral olivine has a limited Fo ranging from 68 to 69. Pyroxenes include both augite and pigeonite, with a narrow range of Mg#=71–80, and composition, respectively, EnFsWoand EnFsWo. Plagioclase is mainly anhedral, conforming to the crystal margins of olivine and pyroxene. The plagioclase grains are elongated and several hundreds of microns in length. Raman spectra shows that plagioclase has been transformed into maskelynite, which is very calcic(An87-95) with low sodium and very low potassium(Ab4-9 Or 0.6-3.7). The weighted mean207 Pb/206 Pb ages of baddeleyite and phosphate measured using a sensitive high resolution ion micro probe(SHRIMP II) are 3119 ± 16 Ma(n = 9, MSWD= 2.5)(mean squared weighted deviates, MSWD) and 3119 ± 18 Ma(n = 15, MSWD = 2.1), respectively,giving the crystallization age of the meteorite. NWA 6950 has similar mineral compositions, geochemical characteristics, and an almost identical age of crystallization to the magnesian gabbro of the NWA 773 *** conclude that NWA 6950 and NWA 773 are paired meteorites, which crystallize at ca. 3119 Ma, and represent magmatic activities in the KREEP(potassium(K), rare earth elements(REE) and phosphorus(P) rich lunar material) region of the Moon.

Vasectomy by epithelial curettage without suture or cautery： a pilot study in humans

Curettage of the epithelium of the vas deferens might be a safe and effective method of male sterilization. We conducted a pilot study of vasectomy by epithelial curettage with a novel microcurette called the Vas-X in 12 normal men requesting elective sterilization. Seminal fluid analysis was obtained monthly after the procedure for 6 months. Pain was assessed by questionnaire. Three months after the procedure, all men attained sperm concentrations of less than 0.2 million sperm per ml, and seven were azoospermic. Post-procedural pain was minimal. Nine men ultimately achieved and maintained azoospermia; however, 4 to 6 months after the procedure, sperm concentrations increased in three of the 12 subjects, necessitating repeat vasectomy. Microscopic examination of the vas deferens from these failures revealed re-canalization. Vasectomy by epithelial curettage can result in effective sterilization; however, 1/4 of the subjects were not effectively sterilized by the procedure due to re-canalization of the vas deferens. Epithelial curettage will require further refinement to determine if it is a viable form of vasectomy.

A Polymer Coated Cicaprost-Eluting Stent Increases Neointima Formation and Impairs Vessel Function in the Rabbit Iliac Artery

Drug-eluting stents have been successful in reducing in-stent restenosis but are not suitable for all lesion types and have been implicated in causing late stent thrombosis due to incomplete regeneration of the endothelial cell layer. In this study we implanted stents coated with cicaprost, a prostacyclin analogue with a long plasma half-life and antiproliferative effects on vascular smooth muscle cells, into the iliac arteries of rabbits. At 28-day follow-up we compared neointima formation within the stented vessels and vascular function in adjacent vessels, to assess if cicaprost could reduce restenosis without impairing vessel function. Arteries implanted with cicaprost eluting stents had significantly more neointima compared to bare metal stents. In adjacent segments of artery, endothelium-dependent relaxation was impaired by the cicaprost-eluting stent but vasodilation to an endothelium-independent vasodilator was maintained. We conclude that the presence of the polymer and sub-optimal release of cicaprost from the stent may be responsible for the increased neointma and impaired functional recovery of the endothelium observed. Further experiments should be aimed at optimising release of cicaprost and exploring different stent polymer coatings.
