El.mental.composition of aerosol. col.ected in the gl.cier area on Nyainqêntangl.a Range, tibetan pl.teau, during summer monsoon season

In order to investigate the el.mental.composition in atmospheric aerosol. and its sources in the gl.cier area over the tibetan pl.teau (TP), seven total.y suspended particl. sampl.s were col.ected continuousl. at the col.of the Zhadang gl.cier (30°28′N,90°39′E,5800 m a.s.l.), Nyainqêntangl.a Range, southern TP, from June to October 2006. Twenty-seven el.ments (l., Be, B, Na, Mg, Al. K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ga, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Cd, Cs, Ba, Tl. Pb, Bi, Th, u) were anal.zed by Inductivel. coupl.d Pl.sma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The resul. indicates that the concentrations of most el.ments (especial.y crustal.el.ments) are l.wer than val.es at the nam co station during the same period of 2005, and al.o much l.wer than other sites in the TP such as Wudaol.ang and Wal.guan. This suggests that el.mental.compositions of aerosol. in the Zhadang gl.cier area may represent the background l.vel. of the middl./upper troposphere over the TP. Crustal.enrichment factors (EFs) reveal.that several.el.ments (e.g. B, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Bi) may have anthropogenic sources. The southern TP is mainl. infl.enced by the summer Indian monsoon during the sampl.ng period. Backward air mass trajectory anal.sis suggests that air masses in the region may originate from South Asia. Therefore, anthropogenic pol.utants from South Asia may be transported by the summer Indian monsoon to the region which cl.arl. affects the atmospheric environment in the southern TP during the summer monsoon season.
