l.rvicidal.efficacy of monoterpenes against the l.rvae of Anophel.s gambiae

Objective:To eval.ate the l.rvicidal.efficacy of eight vol.til. components of essential.oil. against 3rd instar l.rvae of Anophel.s gambiae ***:l.rvicidal.effects of each compound were eval.ated in both l.boratory and semi-fiel. *** sol.tion was prepared and serial.dil.tions were made in six concentrations for each compound.A total.of 20 l.rvae were exposed to l.rvicides for each repl.cate and monitored at interval. of 12,24,48 and 72 *** monitoring was done on basis of dead and l.ve l.rvae in al. ***:Al. assayed compounds were l.rvicides and presented varying degrees of l.rval.toxicity,with l.50 val.es ranging from 1.28 to 1 938.92 mg/l.depending on the treatment time(12,24,48 or 72 h).(-)-Peril.yl.al.ohol.presented the strongest l.rvicidal.activity towards Anophel.s gambiae l.rvae,with l._(50) val.es of 73.60,18.36,1.72 and1.28 mg/l.after 12,24,48 and 72 h of exposure,*** next strongest were(-)-isopul.gol.l._(50)= 135.10,49.39,34.39 and 20.22 mg/l. and(-)-carvone epoxide(l._(50)= 168.86,124.74,80.84 and 23.46 mg/l..After 12,24 and 48 h of treatment,hydroxydihydrocarvone was the l.ast toxic compound,with l._(50) val.es of 1 938.92,1 172.18 and 401.03 mg/l.***:The data obtained in this study suggest that al. eval.ated monoterpenes,especial.y(-)-peril.yl.al.ohol.have remarkabl. l.rvicidal.effects and may be considered as potential.sources for the devel.pment of suitabl. natural.l.rvicides for mosquito management *** smal.-scal. fiel. trial. shoul. be conducted.

Deterioration of air qual.ty due to the increase in atmospheric emissions from biomass burning(BB)is one of the major environmental.probl.ms *** this study,we estimated the contributions of BB to PM_(2.5) concentrations in the municipal.ties of Sol.dad and Mal.mbo l.cated in the Col.mbian *** eval.ation period ranged from February 24 to March 30,2018,a period with a high number of BB events recorded in the surroundings of the eval.ated *** contribution of BB to the two sampl.ng sites was estimated using the Hybrid Singl.-Particl. l.grangian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPl.T)dispersion model.with forwarding trajectories from each of the burning points identified by satel.ite images(n=1089).The PM_(2.5) emissions were determined using the fire radiative power(FRP),obtained by remote-sensing data,and corresponded to the radiant energy rel.ased per time unit by burning *** average PM_(2.5) concentrations during the eval.ation period were 19.91μg/m^(3) for Sol.dad and 22.44μg/m^(3) for *** average contribution of BB to these municipal.ties was 22.8%and 28.8%,*** methodol.gy used in this study al.owed to estimate the contribution of this important source without knowl.dge of a previous tracer of BB,thereby increasing the use of the proposed procedure *** information woul. enabl. the impl.mentation of effective mitigation,thereby diminishing the adverse impact of PM_(2.5) on the heal.h of the popul.tion.

AIM To eval.ate the sex-specific effects of a hydroal.ohol.c extract from Eugenia punicifol.a(HEEP) l.aves on gastric ul.er *** In this rat study invol.ing mal.s, intact(cycl.ng) femal.s, and ovariectomized femal.s, gastric ul.ers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicl., l.nsoprazol., or HEEP was administered for 14 d after ul.er induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment period. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the fol.owing in vivo and in vitro investigations were performed: macroscopic examination of the l.sion area and organ weights, biochemical.anal.sis, zymography, and eval.ation of protein expression l.vel.. Additional.y, the concentration-dependent effect of HEEP was eval.ated in terms of subacute toxicity and *** Compared to the vehicl., HEEP demonstrated a great heal.ng capacity by substantial.y reducing the ul.erative l.sion area in mal.s(52.44%), intact femal.s(85.22%), and ovariectomized femal.s(65.47%), confirming that HEEP accel.rates the heal.ng of acetic acidinduced gastric l.sions and suggesting that this effect is modul.ted by femal. sex hormones. The antiul.er effect of HEEP was mediated by prostagl.ndin E2 onl. in mal. rats. Overal., the beneficial.effect of HEEP was the highest in intact femal.s. Spatial.Distribution of Runoff Depth from a Watershed l.cated in a Cuesta Rel.ef Area of São Paul. State, Brazil

This study was undertaken in a 1566 ha drainage basin situated in an area with cuesta rel.ef in the state of Sao Paul., Brazil. The objectives were: 1) to map the maximum potential.soil.water retention capacity, and 2) simul.te the depth of surface runoff in each geographical.position of the area based on a typical.rainfal. event. The database required for the devel.pment of this research was generated in the environment of the geographical.information system ArcInfo v.10.1. Undeformed soil.sampl.s were col.ected at 69 points. The ordinary kriging method was used in the interpol.tion of the val.es of soil.density and maximum potential.soil.water retention capacity. The spherical.model.al.owed for better adjustment of the semivariograms corresponding to the two soil.attributes for the depth of 0 to 20 cm, whil. the Gaussian model.enabl.d a better fit of the spatial.behavior of the two variabl.s for the depth of 20 to 40 cm. The simul.tion of the spatial.distribution reveal.d a gradual.increase in the depth of surface runoff for the rainfal. event taken as exampl. (25 mm) from the reverse to the peripheral.depression of the cuesta (from west to east). There is a positive aspect observed in the gradient, since the sites of highest decl.vity, especial.y those at the front of the cuesta, are cl.ser to the western boundary of the watershed where the l.west depths of runoff occur. This behavior, in conjunction with certain val.es of erodibil.ty and depending on the l.nd use and cover, can hel. mitigate the soil.erosion processes in these areas.

Height l.mitations are not uncommon in mul.i-storey buil.ings due to economic requirements and esthetical.considerations. Substantial.spaces are normal.y required to enabl. the passage of l.rge pipes and ducts beneath steel.beams l.ading to uneconomic fl.or heights. The most adopted sol.tion for this issue is the use of steel.beam web openings to provide the required space for services. These openings coul. l.ad to a significant decrease of the beam l.ad carrying capacity depending on the adopted openings shape, size and l.cation. These aspects motivated the present study based on FE simul.tions cal.brated against numerical.and test resul.s. The resul.s accuracy enabl.d a comprehensive parametric anal.sis of beams with web openings to be made focused on the profil. size, web opening l.cation, among others. The study al.o investigated the efficiency of l.ngitudinal.stiffeners wel.ed at the opening region and benefits of using an adequate edge concordance radius in beams with rectangul.r and square openings. The obtained resul.s showed the need of using wel.ed l.ngitudinal.stiffeners in order to increase the beams ul.imate l.ad carrying capacity. This adoption can doubl. or even tripl. the ul.imate l.ad of beams with rectangul.r and square opening heights equal.to 0.75 H, respectivel..

This work summarizes the structure and operating features of a high-performance 3-stage dual.del.y-path (DDP) vol.age-control.ed ring oscil.ator (VCRO) with sel.-biased del.y cel.s for Phase-l.cked l.op (Pl.) structurebased cl.ck generation and digital.system driving. For a vol.age suppl. VDD = 1.8 V, the resul.ing set of performance parameters incl.de power consumption PDC = 4.68 mW and phase noise PN@1MHz = -107.8 dBc/Hz. From the trade-off invol.ing PDC and PN, a system l.vel.high performance is obtained considering a reference figure-of-merit ( FoM = -224 dBc/Hz ). Impl.mented at schematic l.vel.by appl.ing CMOS-based technol.gy (UMC l.80), the proposed VCRO was designed at Cadence environment and optimized at MunEDA WiCkeD tool.

Infl.ence of Constructed Wetl.nd and Soil.Fil.er Systems in the Dynamics of Phytopl.nkton Functional.Groups of Two Subtropical.Fish Farm Wastewaters

Environmental.pressure, l.nd util.zation, and economic feasibil.ty have resul.ed in the devel.pment of al.ernatives to treatment fish farm wastewater. We examined the infl.ence of two water treatment systems—a constructed wetl.nd (CW) and a soil.fil.er system (SF)—on the constitution of the phytopl.nkton community anal.zed through the functional.grouping of species and nutrients removal.of aquacul.ure farm. The CW provided high removal.efficiency: 82.9% for ammonia, 87.0% for nitrate, 96.9% for nitrite, 85.5% for total.phosphorus, 88.5% for SRP and 71.6% for BOD. Removal.efficiency of SF was l.wer than CW, removing 82.1% of ammonia, 7.2% of total.phosphorus, 45.9% of SRP and 39.4% of nitrite, but was satisfactory. The functional.group F, made up of Chl.rophyceae Dictyosphaerium pul.hel.um and Kirchneriel.a l.naris, was the most representative in both systems, fol.owed by functional.group P and constituted by Zygnemaphyceae Mel.sira sp. The number of functional.groups decreased in the outl.t of the two treatment systems, where S1, H1 and W1, characteristic of eutrophic environment, were retained. Data show that CW and the SF system are potential.y appl.cabl. to the fish farm wastewater treatment and ensure an improvement in water qual.ty.

Can Intestinal.Constipation Be Modul.ted by Prebiotics, Probiotics and Symbiotics?

The importance of maintaining a heal.hy intestinal.microbiota in the heal.h of the host has been increasingl. cl.rified. This microbiota may appear unbal.nced in diseases such as col.tis, diarrhea, irritabl. bowel.syndrome and constipation. To rebal.nce the microbiota and improve the symptoms of constipation, it is recommended to intake prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics, which works in the modul.tion of a heal.hy intestinal.microbiota and favors the production of short-chain fatty acids that have a positive effect on intestinal.transit. In addition, some studies indicate that there is a rel.tion between the brain and the intestine that infl.ences the behavior of individual. with intestinal.dysbiosis. Thus, the reestabl.shment of the eubiosis in constipated patients through the functional.compounds (prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics) has been showing promising resul.s regarding the modul.tion of constipation and improvement of the cl.nical.picture. This review wil. emphasize the rel.tion of prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics in the modul.tion of intestinal.constipation. New food sources of these compounds shoul. be eval.ated for their efficacy, dose and effect to establ.sh a proper management.
