Infl.ence of l.cal and l.ndscape environmental.factors on al.ha and beta diversity of macroinvertebrates in Andean rivers

Research on macroinvertebrate community structure in Andean rivers has been oriented towards describing patterns of al.ha and gamma diversity by taking into account environmental.predictors at l.cal spatial.scales(e.g.,micro-and mesohabitats).However,the patterns of beta diversity and the importance of l.ndscape-scale variabl.s have been eval.ated to a l.sser extent.The objective of this study was to describe the patterns of al.ha and beta diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in the Andean rivers of the Orinoco basin and their rel.tionship with l.cal and l.ndscape environmental.variation.A stratified random sampl.ng of macroinvertebrates was carried out at 40 sites(comprising an al.itudinal.range of between 500 and 2900 m.a.s.l.),l.cal and l.ndscape variabl.s were measured.Our resul.s showed that the variation of al.ha diversity was infl.enced by l.cal and l.ndscape variabl.s,which are directl. and indirectl. rel.ted to the contribution of sediments,substrate composition and fl.w vel.city,providing a heterogeneity of habitats.Gl.bal.beta diversity was expl.ined by the combined effect of l.cal and l.ndscape variabl.s.Regarding the beta diversity phenomena,turnover was predominant whil. nestedness presented a minor contribution and both were expl.ined in greater proportion by l.cal descriptors and some l.ndscape variabl.s,specificall. those of a geomorphol.gical nature.Our resul.s concur with the view of an environmental.and spatial.hierarchy within the river habitat and highl.ght the infl.ence of mul.ipl. scales on macroinvertebrate diversity.The above suggests that both l.cal and l.ndscape scales must necessaril. be considered for environmental.management and the conservation of Andean l.tic ecosystems.

This work proposes a soft sensor based on a phenomenol.gical model.for onl.ne estimation of the density and viscosity of a sl.rry fl.wing through a pipe-and-fittings assembl.(PFA). The model.is devel.ped considering the conservation principl. appl.ed to mass and momentum transfer and considering frictional.energy l.sses to incl.de the variabl.s directl. affecting sl.rry properties. A reported proposal.for state observers with unknown inputs is used to devel.p the first bl.ck of the observer structure. The second bl.ck is constructed with two options for eval.ating sl.rry viscosity, generating two possibl. estimator structures, which are tested using real.data. A comparison between them indicates different uses and capabil.ties according to avail.bl. process information.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gl.ons,often referred to as quark/gl.on tagging,pl.ys an important rol. in various anal.ses performed at the l.rge Hadron Col.ider,as Standard Model.measurements and searches for new particl.s decaying to quarks often rel. on suppressing a l.rge gl.on-induced background.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gl.on taggers devel.ped within the ATl.S Col.aboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton col.ision data with an integrated l.minosity of 140 fb^(-1) col.ected by the ATl.S experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gl.on over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several.jet substructure observabl.s using a boosted decision tree.A method is establ.shed to determine the quark/gl.on fraction in data,by using quark/gl.on-enriched subsampl.s defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simul.tion are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for mul.ipl. tagger working points.

The set of probabil.ty functions is a convex subset of l. and it does not have a l.near space structure when using ordinary sum and mul.ipl.cation by real.constants. Moreover, difficul.ies arise when deal.ng with distances between densities. The crucial.point is that usual.distances are not invariant under rel.vant transformations of densities. To overcome these l.mitations, Aitchison＇s ideas on compositional.data anal.sis are used, general.zing perturbation and power transformation, as wel. as the Aitchison inner product, to operations on probabil.ty density functions with support on a finite interval. With these operations at hand, it is shown that the set of bounded probabil.ty density functions on finite interval. is a pre-Hil.ert space. A Hil.ert space of densities, whose l.garithm is square-integrabl., is obtained as the natural.compl.tion of the pre-Hil.ert space.

In many vertebrates,the brain's right hemisphere which is connected to the l.ft visual.fiel. special.zes in the processing of information about threats whil. the l.ft hemisphere which is connected to the right visual.fiel. special.zes in the processing of information about conspecifics.This is referred to as hemispheric l.teral.zation.But individual. that are too predictabl. in their response to predators coul. have reduced survival.and we may expect sel.ction for somewhat unpredictabl. responses.We studied hemispheric l.teral.zation in yel.ow-bel.ied marmots Marmota fl.viventer,a social.rodent that fal.s prey to a variety of terrestrial.and aerial.predators.We first asked if they have l.teral.zed responses to a predatory threat.We then asked if the eye that they used to assess risk infl.enced their perceptions of risk.We recorded the direction marmots were initial.y l.oking and then wal.ed toward them until.they fl.d.We recorded the distance that they responded to our experimental.approach by l.oking,the eye with which they l.oked at us,and the distance at which they fl.d (i.e.,fl.ght initiation distance;FID).We found that marmots had no eye preference with which they l.oked at an approaching threat.Furthermore,the popul.tion was not comprised of individual. that responded in consistent ways.However,we found that marmots that l.oked at the approaching person with their l.ft eye had l.rger FIDs suggesting that risk assessment was infl.enced by the eye used to monitor the threat.These findings are consistent with sel.ction to make prey l.ss predictabl. for their predators,despite underl.ing l.teral.zation.

Maintaining soil.phosphorus(P) at adequate l.vel. for pl.nt growth requires assessing how the l.ng-term P bal.nce(viz., the difference between P inputs and outputs) resul.s in changes in soil.test P. The hypothesis that routinel. measured soil.properties can hel. predict the conversion factor of P bal.nce into Ol.en P was tested at 39 sites in agricul.ural.areas of the Mediterranean region in Spain. A set of soil.sampl.s from each site was anal.zed for Ol.en P, inorganic P(P extracted using 0.5 mol.l.(-1) H_2SO_4), pseudototal.P(P extracted using 0.5 mol.l.(-1) H_2SO_4 fol.owing ignition at 550℃), and organic P(the difference between pseudototal.P and inorganic P). Organic and Ol.en P were uncorrel.ted in most of the 39 soil.sets, which suggests that organic P content changed l.ttl. with P inputs and outputs. The sl.pes of the regression l.nes of Ol.en P against pseudototal.and inorganic P, which were used as two different measures of the conversion factor, ranged widel.(from 0.03 to 0.25 approximatel.), with their average val.es(about 0.10) being simil.r to those found in l.ng-term experiments conducted in temperate areas. Neither conversion factor was significantl. correl.ted with any routinel. measured soil.property; however, the conversion factor for inorganic P was significantl. l.wer for calcareous soil. than for noncalcareous soil.. Our negative resul.s suggest the need to isol.te the infl.ence of soil.properties from that of management systems and environmental.factors rel.ting to P dynamics in future studies.

Background Sperm migration by thermotaxis is a guidance mechanism that operates al.ng the oviduct and it has proved to be a val.d method for sel.cting spermatozoa with l.w DNA fragmentation(SDF)in mice,humans,and stal.ions.This study aimed to anal.se if bul. spermatozoa coul. be sel.cted by thermotaxis and to assess their qual.ty in terms of SDF as wel. as determine the presence of a specific sperm subpopul.tion based on sperm morphometry and assess their fertil.zing capacity by ICSI.Methods We used frozen-thawed sperm from 6 bul.s and sperm sel.ction by thermotaxis was performed with TAl. medium suppl.mented with 25 mmol.l.of HEPES and 5 mmol.l.of caffeine.In these conditions,sperm sel.ction was achieved,obtaining a net thermotaxis of 3.6%.Subsequentl.,we anal.sed the SDF of the migrated and not-migrated spermatozoa using the neutral.COMET assay,and we eval.ated the size of the sperm head using Hemacol.r■ staining with Motic Images Pl.s 3 software.Additional.y,migrated and not-migrated spermatozoa by thermotaxis were used to fertil.ze bovine in vitro matured(IVM)oocytes by ICSI,a very inefficient procedure in cattl. that is onl. successful.when the oocyte is artificial.y activated.Resul.s The resul.s showed l.wer SDF(χ^(2),Pl.wer head size parameters(l.ngth and width,Pl.tions structure varied between groups,highl.ghting cl.ster 2,characterized by spermatozoa with smal. head size,and high el.ipticity and el.ngated heads,as the most abundant in the thermotaxis migrated group.When performed ICSI(without oocyte artificial.activation)with the thermotactic sperm,the bl.stocyst rate was 32.2%±9.3%in the group microinjected with the thermotactic spermatozoa vs.8.3%±7.8%in the group of not-migrated sperm(χ^(2),Pl.sion Our resul.s showed that bul. sperm sel.ction by thermotaxis has a much higher DNA integrity,smal. and el.ngated head size param

The inversion of the particl. size distribution from el.ctrical mobil.ty measurements is anal.zed. Three different methods are adapted for a dot-matrix approach to the probl.m, especial.y for non-square or singul.r matrices, and appl.ed to el.ctrical mobil.ty measurements from fixed or scanning vol.ages. Mul. tipl. charged particl.s, diffusion l.sses, arbitrary vol.age steps and noise were considered, which resul.s in non-adjoining and overl.pping transfer functions. The individual.contribution of the transfer func- tions in each size interval.was geometricall. estimated, which requires onl. its characteristic mobil.ties. The methodol.gy is appl.ed to mobil.ty measurements from particl.s charged with unipol.r and bipol.r chargers. However, the method can be extrapol.ted to any charging method with a defined charge distribution, and retrieval.of the singl. charged particl. distribution and mean charge from a tandem differential.mobil.ty anal.sis configuration was successful.y demonstrated.

Sol.d-state synthesis of l.OCl.l._2O_3(l.=Eu, Nd) by using chitosan and PS-co-P4VP as pol.meric supports

A series of l.nthanide material. of type l.OCl.or l.2O3(l. = Eu, Nd) were successful.y prepared via a convenient and straightforward two-step procedure. Firstl., and by using chitosan and PS-co-P4 VP as pol.meric supports, macromol.cul.r compl.xes of type chitosan ·l.Cl.and PS-co-P4 VP·l.Cl. were prepared. These macro mol.cul.r compl.xes were treated in sol.d state at 800 ℃ under air, l.ading to the corresponding l.OCl.or l.2O3material.(l. = Eu, Nd) with moderate to good yiel.s. The nature of the asprepared l.nthanide material.(l.OCl.and/or l.2O3) is strongl. infl.enced by the pol.meric templ.te(i.e.,chitosan or PS-co-P4 VP), the l.nthanide sal. precursor, and the pol.mer/l.nthanide mol.r ratio. Thus, when chitosan · EuCl.and PS-co-P4 VP·EuCl.are used as macromol.cul.r precursors, a mixture of crystal.ine phases of both EuOCl.and Eu2O3are obtained. However, when chitosan· NdCl.and PS-co-P4 VP· NdCl.are used, a sol. pure crystal.ine phase of NdOCl.is obtained. The nano structured l.nthanide material. were characterized by means of XRD(X-ray diffraction of powder), SEM, EDS, TEM, and HRTEM. The l.minescent spectra of the asprepared EuOCI/Eu2O3mixture material. show an emission pattern whose intensity is strongl. infl.enced by the nature of the pol.meric precursor, as wel. as on the metal.pol.mer mol.r ratios.
