Due to the high incidence of bone fractures in the population, it became necessary to produce scaffolds that are able to assist in tissue regeneration. It is necessary to find an appropriate balance between the mechanical and biological properties, in order to mimic the natural tissue, these properties are directly related to the architecture and their degree of porosity, as well as the size of their pores and their interconnectivity. In this perspective, the 3D printing stands out, where the structure is obtained layer by layer, according to a predetermined computational model which provides a greater control of architecture and scaffold geometry and overcomes, in this way, the limitations of traditional techniques of scaffolds manufacturing. In this way, the objective of this seminar is to present the state of the art of the polymer scaffolds produced by 3D printing and applied to bone tissue regeneration, highlighting the advantages and limitations of this process.

The incidence of Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MACPD) has been globally increasing. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of clinical characteristics and treatment response among patients in the Amazon region of Brazil and conduct a retrospective cohort study at a prominent referral hospital in the State of Par, Brazil, from 2012 to 2020. The M. avium group represented 58.9% of cases, followed by M. intracellulare (35.7%), M. colombiense (3.6%), and M. chimaera (1.8%). The majority of patients (73.2%) were female and with an average age of 63 years. Primary clinical manifestations included persistent cough and sputum production. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) averaged 2.47, with 36.3% of patients having a CCI score equal to higher than 3. Notably, over 70% of patients had received treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis before initiating treatment for MAC infection. The fibrocavitary radiologic form was the most prevalent (55.4%), frequently exhibiting a bilateral distribution (53.6%). Antimicrobial susceptibility revealed a significant prevalence of MAC resistance to drugs in the therapeutic regimen. despite this, most of the patients experienced clinical improvement (50%). In conclusion, this study highlights a higher prevalence of MAC infections among middle-aged women, with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis treatment and presenting the fibrocavitary radiological form was predominant.

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based nanocomposites consisting of metallic oxide nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO, ZrO2) were obtained from an aqueous solution of 7% PVA, in order to compare the microstructural, and physical properties of bionanocomposite films reinforced with various loading contents (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% w/w). They were evaluated regarding their molecular toughness through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), regarding their chemical structural through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), regarding their crystallinity throught X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and regarding termal properties through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The NMR results showed that the smallest concentrations of these oxides have a tendency to disperse better in the polymeric matrix, improving the structural toughness. Besides, changes in the termal resistance of the material were found with the use of TGA and DSC.

Spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times are one of the most attractive tools in the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to evaluate the level of clay dispersion in the nanocomposite matrices. The efficiency of the relaxation processes can be used to evaluate the nanoparticles intermolecular interactions and, consequently, the dispersion of them in the polymer matrix, the molecular dynamic of the hybrid compounds, as well as the molecular domains formation in an organic material. The determination of relaxation parameters was carried out to evaluate the organoclay exfoliation and intercalation process in the polymeric matrix, in addition to their dispersion and distribution in the matrix. The proton NMR relaxation data showed that the polymeric nanomaterials investigated presented good intermolecular interaction that promoted good nanoparticles dispersion and distribution in the hybrid materials. The proportion of 2% clay promoted a greater heterogeneity in the matrix compared to other ratios;1% clay influenced only to the higher molecular rigidity phase;and 3% clay had a decrease in heterogeneity compared to 2% though still influenced the matrix as a whole. These results prove the efficiency of NMR technique in the evaluation of nanofillers interaction with polymer matrices, as well as their dispersion and distribution.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive inflammatory liver disorder that is rare in children and adolescents. AIH has a broad clinical spectrum and a quick response to treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medication. The available diagnosis criteria have limitations and should be evaluated in pediatric populations. Recently, some studies reported that the 2008 simplified diagnostic criteria for AIH could be used in children with high sensibility and specificity. In addition, the authors reported that globulin and immunoglobulin G levels can be used interchangeably for diagnostic purposes. They also demonstrated that the 2008 simplified criteria fail in identifying patients with fulminant hepatic failure. Here, we discuss the limitations of the use of these criteria in pediatric patients and the requirement of more studies to improve the diagnosis of AIH in children.

The skin is the most extensive and outermost organ in the body and can be greatly exploited both from the point of view of alternative routes of systemic drug delivery and treatment of dermatological diseases. Because of its main function as a barrier against harmful external agents, it also becomes a barrier to drug administration, but there are strategies to reduce this limitation of this promising route of administration. The development of polymer-based film-forming formulations is extensively studied for this purpose, since the formation of a film on the skin increases the contact time of the drug, for this being characterized as a controlled release reservoir system. There are a multitude of possible polymers to compose these formulations and their choice must be made according to the purpose of each application. This work, therefore, aims to study the state of the art of film forming systems for topical application of pharmaceutical formulations.

Surface runoff and soil erosion in a natural regeneration area of the Brazilian Cerrado

The Brazilian Cerrado has been converted to farmland,and there is little evidence that this expansion will decrease,mainly because agriculture is the country's main economic ***,the impacts of intense modification of land use and land cover on surface runoff and soil erosion are still poorly un-derstood in this ***,we assessed surface runoff and soil loss in a woodland Cerrado area under a former pasture area,which was abandoned and has undergone a natural regeneration process for 7 years(RC).Its results were compared with that found in an undisturbed area of woodland Cerrado(CE),40-month-old eucalyptus(3.0×1.8 m)(EU),and pasture under rotational grazing(PA).The study was conducted on Red Acrisol located in the Brazilian *** performed rainfall simulations on a plot of 0.7 m2 and using three constant rainfall intensities of 60,90,and 120 mm h-1 for 1 *** each rainfall intensity,we carried out four repetitions using different plots in each treatment,i.e.12 plots per treat-ment studied and 48 plots in *** noted that the soil physical properties were improved in RC and,consequently,water infiltration and soil erosion control;RC presented surface runoff and soil loss different from EU and PA(a=0.05).The macroporosity and soil bulk density affected surface runoff in RC and PA because the RC was used as pasture and is currently regenerating back to the cerrado *** the rainfall intensity increased,EU became more similar to PA,which showed the highest surface runoff and soil *** findings indicate that natural regeneration processes(pasture to the cerrado vegetation)tend to improve the soil ecosystem services,improving infiltration and reducing surface runoff and soil erosion.

We present numerical studies on the switching characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with modulation in the third order nonlinear index of refraction along it’s length. The FBG is operating in a continuous wave regime (CW). This study was done taking into account the possible asymmetry brought by the non harmonic modulation of the nonlinearity, leading to different reflection and transmission characteristics, that depend on the direction of propagation along the modulated nonlinear FBG. This phenomenon may be useful for applications like an optical isolator. It was found that for a set of values of the modulation parameter, the FBG can exhibit multistable states. The numerical studies were obtained starting from the coupled-mode equations solved from the coupled-mode theory and simulated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.

The objective of this study was to determine adsorption isotherms and hygroscopic behavior of lyophilized powder from grugru palm. The powders of grugru palm were obtained by lyophilization process without maltodextrin (T1) and with 8% matodextrin (T2). The experimental data were obtained through the static gravimetric method at temperatures (25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃), with different saturated solutions of salts. The models of GAB, BET, Henderson and Oswin were fitted to experimental data. The values obtained for hygroscopicity were 7.68% and 6.86% and the degrees of caking were 0.33% and 0.09% for T1 and T2, respectively. Mathematical models of adsorption isotherms for grugru palm powders can be classified as Type III. The GAB and Oswin models represented better the behavior of isotherms for T1 and T2. Grugru palm powder showed an increase in the humidity of the monolayer Xm along with increasing temperature. The grugru palm powder demonstrated to be a non-hygroscopic product, non-caking features.
