Introduction: Antenatal care (ANC) contributes to the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The study aimed to investigate the determinants of the low proportion of pregnant women seen for first antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy at the urban medical center of Koudougou, Burkina Faso. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with data collection from June 08 to August 18, 2021. It involved a sample of 302 participants including 280 pregnant women and 22 maternity providers. Semi-structured individual interviews, non-participant observation, and a literature review were used. Results: Pregnant women age 20 and over, knowledge of the date of their last menstrual period, and knowledge of the antenatal care calendar were associated with coming into contact (1) with Antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy. In addition, there was a lack of availability of antenatal care services, inadequate reception of clients, and shortages of health products. Conclusion: There is a need to revisit strategies for communicating with women about ANC, reorganizing ANC services, and improving ANC services.

This study focuses on the use of heavy fuel oil in construction material in Burkina Faso. Its mixture with silty or clayey soil is used as a coating to reinforce the walls of raw earth constructions which are very sensitive to water. The interest of this study is to determine erodibility, water content, while highlighting the influence of the porosity accessible by water on thermal diffusion in construction material containing heavy fuel oil. The heavy fuel oil was mixed with a silty-clayey soil, in different proportions, and water to make bricks samples on which tests were carried out. At the end of the experimental tests, it appears that the water content increases gradually, but not significantly with the addition of heavy fuel oil, which causes a slight increase in the speed of heat propagation through the material with reduced porosity, particularly those containing higher quantities of heavy fuel oil. Conversely, we note a good performance of heavy fuel oil in terms of water resistance properties such as porosity accessible by water and erodibility. This allows us to conclude that the mixture of heavy fuel oil and silty-clayey soil used as a coating material could greatly reduce water infiltration into the walls of housing constructions with raw earthen materials.

West African countries are among the larger global millet producers but have low yields mainly due to the low quality of their marginal *** objectives of this work were to analyze the benefits and constraints of pearl millet production,to summarize the impact of different cropping systems and fertilization modes while proposing a holistic approach for sustainable *** major constraints on millet yields are low rates or absence of fertilizers,unsuitable cropping systems,and the proliferation of pests and *** with cowpea is a widely used cropping system in addition to crop rotation,monocropping and agroforestry *** is the best fertilization mode for West African *** is concluded that integrated systems(breeding new cultivars,intercropping and microdosing)in tied ridges or infiltration pit practices,sustained by the implementation of innovative approaches such as the‘Science and Technology Backyards’from China are a promising approach for increasing pearl millet *** addition,policies such as land protection of the farmers and subsidies of inputs from the government and the effective involvement of farmers and extension officers are necessary in sustaining millet production in West Africa.

Groundwater level Changes since 1978 in an African City on Basement Rocks: The Case of the CIEH Borehole in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

The CIEH piezometer, located in the center of Ouagadougou city presents a water level record spanning the West African Drought which peaked during the 80s and 90s. Its water level is investigated as a potential proxy for groundwater water resources in West African basement rock aquifers submitted to climate changes. 23 boreholes and wells in various land uses and within a 2 km radius around the CIEH piezometer were monitored during the 2013-2014 hydrologic year. The minimum water level occurred in May, at the end of the dry season, while the maximum took place in October, one month after the end of the rainy season. The mean water level amplitude is 3 m, the minimum amplitude being reached at the CIEH piezometer (0.76 m). Moreover, the CIEH piezometer is located in a 2 m amplitude water table depression either in May or in October. Simplified 2d modeling using a general basement aquifer structure shows that (i) the water level in the piezometer is under ongoing influence of the spillway raise of the nearby dam#3 lake in 2002, (ii) the whole 1978-2004 period cannot be modelled with constant parameters. A 3% decrease of water uptake is adopted after 1985, presumably resulting from land use changes in the Ouagadougou city. The water table at the CIEH piezometer is presently at its 1978 level, which can considered as a pre-drought value. However this includes a 1.5 m contribution of the two abovementioned anthropic effects Further quantitative interpretations of the CIEH piezometer record will require additional geophysical and hydrological investigations.

Epidemiology of Urological Emergencies at the Regional University Hospital Center of Ouahigouya, Burkina Faso

Introduction: Urological emergencies are less frequent compared to other emergencies, particularly traumatological and digestive emergencies. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological profile of urological emergencies in a regional hospital in Burkina Faso. Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional study of urological emergencies admitted to the Surgical Department of the Ouahigouya Regional University Hospital in Burkina Faso over a period of 41 months. The study covered a 41-month period from March 2015 to July 2018. Ethical clearance was taken from the institutional ethics committee. Results: Urological emergencies accounted for 3.7% of all emergencies. The mean age of the patients was 56.59 ± 25.93 years (range 1 year - 95 years). The sex ratio was 12.05. Bladder urinary retention was the main urological emergency in 48.28% of cases. Suprapubic cystostomy was the most performed surgical procedure (56.25%) followed by debridement of external genitalia gangrene (27.68%). Conclusion: Urological emergencies occupy a significant place in our work context. An increase in the number of urologists would improve their management.

New Geological and Hydrogeological Information on the Eastern Border of the Gondo Plain （Burkina Faso）

The Gondo plain lies between Mali and Burkina Faso and it is in interland basin into the West African Craton. Since 2003, this study has been carried out two research projects on the southwest part of the plain, where the piezometric levels are very low （50 m to 100 m）. It has two main purposes： find water resources to provide drinking water supply to Ouahigouya town and assess the exploitation possibility of the deep aquifer for rural water supply. Combined methods were used to reach the objectives of this study--remote sensing, geology, geophysics （electromagnetism and resistivity methods）, hydrochemistry and isotope chemistry. So, the methodology allows to specify the geology and the tectonic of the eastern border of the basin, identify and characterize the different aquifers and their relationships. Through the implementation of 250 m deep drilled boreholes, this study reveals that the water level of the lower Cambrian limestones can be under pressure below the continental terminal deposits. The study highlights paleo-karstic zones in the Gondo plain and shows that water chemistry and isotope chemistry can be used to differentiate water sheets and evaluate their recharge.

Evaluation of the Adequacy between the Workload and the Number of State Midwives and Maieuticians Practicing in the Gynecology-Obstetrics Departments of the University Hospitals of Burkina Faso

Objective: To evaluate the adequacy between the workload and the number of midwives and state midwives practicing in the gynecology-obstetrics services of the university hospitals of Burkina Faso. Methodology: This is a multicenter study conducted in 4 university hospitals representing this country (for brevity referred here to as A, B, C, and D) from May 1, 2018, to April 30, 2019. The Workload Indicators of Staffing Need (WISN) method was used to analyze the workload. Results: Dystocic delivery was the activity that took the most time. Inpatient activities were the most performed in terms of volume. At the University Hospitals D and C, there was an over-staffing of midwives and maïeuticians with a ratio of 1.93 and 2.12 respectively. At University Hospital B, the workload was in line with the existing number of State midwives and maieuticians. A low workload pressure (04%) was found at the University Hospital A. Conclusion: In most of the University Hospital Centers, there was no match between the workload and the number of midwives and maïeuticians. These results highlight the need for redeplayment of midwives and maïeuticians in order to ensure good health coverage for midwives and maïeuticians.

Gangrene of the External Genitalia at the Regional University Hospital Center of Ouahigouya: Epidemiological Profile and Therapeutic Aspects

Introduction: Gangrene of extern genitary organs is a rapidly progressive necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum and external genitalia that results from a polymicrobial infection. Mortality remains high despite advances in resuscitation. We report the experience of the surgery department of the Regional University Hospital Center (CHUR) of Ouahigouya in order to describe the epidemiological profile and the therapeutic aspects of GOGE. Patients and methods: We carried out a descriptive and analytical retrospective study collecting 41 cases of Fournier’s gangrene treated over 63 months (from March 2013 to July 2018) in the surgical department of the Ouahigouya regional university hospital center. Ethical clearance was taken from the institutional ethics committee. Results: The mean age of the patients was 65.02 ± 17.92 years with extremes of 23 years and 95 years. All patients were male. Urologic causes were the most common with 36.58% of cases. The average consultation time was 15.44 ± 16.04 days with extremes of 1 day and 60 days. All patients received resuscitation, bi or triantibiotherapy and surgical debridement. The mortality rate was 24.39%. The mean duration of hospitalization was 10.83 ± 6.257 days with extremes of 1 day and 60 days. Conclusion: The Fournier’s gangrene always has a very high lethality. Improving the prognosis requires fast and effective management.

The dermoid ovarian is an organic mild tumor. It can be revealed by an adnexal torsion which constitutes a gynecological emergency that can bring into play in a short term after the functional prognosis. We are reporting an observed case in an 11-year-old teenager who is in times peri-pubertal. The patient was presenting a painful abdomino-pelvic syndrome and a pelvic mass at the physical examination. The ultrasound was showing a right cyst mass with a right moderated hydronephrosis. A right adnexectomy was realized. The histological test after excision of the adnexal was showing a mature cystic teratoma of the right ovary with a congestive and edematous tubal fragment.

Trauma to the Male External Genitalia: Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Therapeutic Aspects at Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital of Ouagadougou

Objective: To describe the epidemiology, diagnosis and therapeutic outcomes of trauma to the external genitalia trauma. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study over a period of six and a half years from January 1st, 2006 to June 30th, 2012. About 42 cases of trauma to the male external genitalia were received at the emergency department of General surgery and Urology of Yalgado Ouedraogo Teaching Hospital of Ouagadougou. Results: The average age of the patients was 31.7 years and the age groups most affected were those between 16 - 26 years. Our study population were mainly pupils and students with 40.5% of cases. Causes of trauma to the external genitalia were mainly highway accident with 19 cases (45.2% of cases). 85.7% of patients presented on the day of the trauma. Scrotum and its contents were more exposed to trauma (30 cases) than penis (12 cases). Treatment was most often surgical (78.6%). The postoperative course was uneventful in 75% of the cases of testicular trauma and 72.7% of the cases of penile trauma. Conclusion: External genitalia traumas affect young people. Complications can be important like erectile dysfunction. However, the prognosis is good if treatment is early.
