This review updates the present status of the field of molecular markers and marker-assisted selection(MAS),using the example of drought tolerance in *** accuracy of selected quantitative trait loci(QTls),candidate genes and suggested markers was assessed in the barley genome *** common strategies are described for molecular marker development,candidate gene identification and verification,and their possible applications in MAS to improve the grain yield and yield components in barley under drought *** strategies are based on the following five principles:(1)Molecular markers are designated as genomic‘tags’,and their‘prediction’is strongly dependent on their distance from a candidate gene on genetic or physical maps;(2)plants react differently under favourable and stressful conditions or depending on their stage of development;(3)each candidate gene must be verified by confirming its expression in the relevant conditions,e.g.,drought;(4)the molecular marker identified must be validated for MAS for tolerance to drought stress and improved grain yield;and(5)the small number of molecular markers realized for MAS in breeding,from among the many studies targeting candidate genes,can be explained by the complex nature of drought stress,and multiple stress-responsive genes in each barley genotype that are expressed differentially depending on many other factors.

Although complexation with soil organic matter may improve zinc(Zn)bioavailability to plants,the effect of Zn sorbent surface on the use of complexed Zn by plants remains *** objective of this research was to elucidate how Zn complexation with humic substances(HS)and phytate affects the uptake of Zn by wheat plants depending on the main sorbent surface in growth media,i.e.,carbonates and Fe *** this end,two pot experiments were performed,one using Fe oxide-coated siliceous as the siliceous growth medium sand and the other using a mixture of calcareous sand and siliceous sand as the calcareous growth *** experiment involved three Zn sources,Zn-HS complex,Zn phytate,and ZnSO_(4).All sources were applied with surface irrigation at two Zn rates(0.25 and 2 mg kg^(-1) growth medium).The Zn-HS complex significantly increased Zn uptake by plants in both media,relative to the other two Zn sources,but no significant difference was observed between Zn phytate and ZnSO_(4).In the calcareous medium,Zn-HS complex and Zn phytate resulted in significantly higher dry biomass yields of wheat than ZnSO_(4).In the siliceous medium,spike and shoot dry biomass yields with Zn-HS complex at the low rate and Zn phytate at both rates were not significantly different from those with ZnSO_(4) at the high *** harvest,approximately 50%of the Zn applied as Zn-HS complex remained extractable by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA),while this proportion was less than 20%for the other Zn ***,Zn-HS complex and Zn phytate are sources of available Zn for plants,and they are more effective than ZnSO_(4) in increasing plant growth,particularly when carbonates are the main Zn sorbent surface.

Common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris) is an annual legume crop that is grown worldwide for its edible dry seeds and tender pods. Marsh spot(MS) of the seeds is a physio-genic stress disease affecting seed quality in beans. Studies have suggested that this disease involves a nutritional disorder caused by manganese deficiency, but the inheritance of resistance to this disease has not been reported. A biparental genetic population composed of 138 recombinant inbred lines(RIls) was developed from a cross between an MS resistant cultivar ‘Cran09’ and an MS susceptible cultivar ‘Messina’. The 138 RIls and their two parents were evaluated for MS resistance during five consecutive years from 2015 to 2019 in sandy and heavy clay soils in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. The MS incidence(MSI) and the MS resistance index(MSRI) representing disease severity were shown to be both highly correlated heritable traits that had high broad-sense heritability values(H;) of 86.5% and 83.2%, respectively. No significant differences for MSI and MSRI were observed between the two soil types in all five-(MSI) or four-year(MSRI) data collection, but significant correlations among years were observed despite MS resistance was moderately affected by year. The MSIs and MSRIs displayed a right-skewed distribution, indicating a mixed genetic model involving a few major genes and polygenes. Using the joint segregation analysis method, the same four major genes with additive-epistasis effects showed the best fit for both traits, explaining 84.4% and85.3% of the phenotypic variance for MSI and MSRI, respectively. For both traits, the M1, M2, M3 and m4 acted as the favorable(resistant) alleles for the four genes where M and m represent two alleles of each gene. However, due to epistatic effects, only the individuals of the M1 M2 M3 M4 haplotype appeared to be highly resistant, whereas those of the m1 m2 m3 M4 haplotype were the most susceptible. Peanut is a worldwide oilseed crop and the need to assess germplasm in a non-destructive manner is important for seed nutritional *** this study,Near Infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS)was applied to rapidly assess germplasm variability from whole seed of 699 samples,field-collected and assembled in four genetic and environmentbased sets:one set of 300 varieties of a core-collection and three sets of 133 genotypes of an interspecific population,evaluated in three environments in a large spatial scale of two countries,Mbalmayo and Bafia in Cameroon and Nioro in Senegal,under rainfed *** elemental spectra were gathered on six subsets of seeds of each sample,after three rotation scans,with a spectral resolution of 16 cm-1over the spectral range of867 nm to 2530 *** were then processed by principal component analysis(PCA)coupled with Partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PlS-DA).As results,a huge variability was found between varieties and genotypes for all NIR wavelength within and between *** magnitude of genetic variation was particularly observed at 11 relevant wavelengths such as 1723 nm,usually related to oil content and fatty acid *** yielded the most chemical attributes in three significant PCs(i.e.,eigenvalues>10),which together captured 93%of the total variation,revealing genetic and environment structure of varieties and genotypes into four clusters,corresponding to the four samples *** pattern of genetic variability of the interspecific population covers,remarkably half of spectrum of the core-collection,turning out to be the ***,a PlS-DA model was developed and a strong accuracy of 99.6%was achieved for the four sets,aiming to classify each seed sample according to environment *** confusion matrix achieved for the two sets of Bafia and Nioro showed 100%of instances classified correctly with 100%at both sensitivity and specificity,confirming that their seed quality was different f

The effect of Argan plant extract （APE） on the corrosion of the steel in hydrochloric acid medium was studied using gravimetric, electrochemical polarization and impedance spectroscopy （EIS） measurements. Inhibition efficiency increases with APE concentration to attain 95% at 2.5 g/l. We note good agreement between gravimetric and electrochemical methods （potentiodynamic polarization and EIS）. Effect of temperature is also made in the 298-328 K range. Polarization measurements show also that APE act as a mixed inhibitor. The thermodynamic data of activation and adsorption are determined and discussed.
