Effects of 60 Hz electromagnetic field exposure on testiculargerm cell apoptosis in mice

Aim: To evaluate the effects of 60 Hz extremely low frequency (ELF) elelctromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on germ cell apoptosis in the testis of mice. Methods: Adult male BALB/c mice (7 weeks of age) were exposed to a 60 Hz EMF of 0.1 mT or 0.5 mT for 24 h/day. A sham-exposed group served as the control. After 8 weeks of exposure, the mice were sacrificed. Germ cell apoptosis in the testis was assessed by histopathological examination, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling assay (TUNEL) and flow cytometric examination of isolated spermatogenic cells stained with 7 aminoactinomycin D (7-AAD). Results: EMF exposure did not significantly affect the body and testis weights, but significantly increased the incidence of germ cell death. The distinguishing morphological feature of EMF exposure was a decrement in the number of well organized seminiferous tubules. Quantitative analysis of TUNEL-positive germ cells showed a significantly higher apoptotic rate in the 0.5 mT exposed mice than that in the sham controls (P<0.05), while the difference between the two exposed groups was insignificant. The TUNEL-positive cells were mainly spermatogonia. In flow cytometry analysis, the percentage of live cells [forward scatter count (FSC)high7-AAD-] was lower in the exposed groups than that in the controls (Figure 5A), but the decrease in viability was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Continuous exposure to ELF EMF may induce testicular germ cell apoptosis in mice.

Clinical characteristics and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease: A comparison of Eastern and Western perspectives

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is a chronic, relapsing intestinal inflammatory disorder with unidentified causes. Both environmental factors and genetic aspects are believed to be crucial to the pathogenesis of IBD. The incidence and prevalence of IBD have recently been increasing throughout Asia, presumably secondary to environmental changes. This increasing trend in IBD epidemiology necessitates specific health care planning and education in Asia. To this end, we must gain a precise understanding of the distinctive clinical and therapeutic characteristics of Asian patients with IBD. The phenotypes of IBD reportedly differ considerably between Asians and Caucasians. Thus, use of the same management strategies for these different populations may not be appropriate. Moreover, investigation of the Asian-specific clinical aspects of IBD offers the possibility of identifying causative factors in the pathogenesis of IBD in this geographical area. Accordingly, this review summarizes current knowledge of the phenotypic manifestations and management practices of patients with IBD, with a special focus on a comparisonof Eastern and Western perspectives.

Recognition of walking environments and gait period by surface electromyography

Recognizing and predicting the movement and intention of the wearer in control of an exoskeleton robot is very challenging. It is difficult for exoskeleton robots, which measure and drive human movements, to interact with humans. Therefore, many different types of sensors are needed. When using various sensors, a data design is needed for effective sensing. An electromyographic(EMG) signal can be used to identify intended motion before the actual movement, and the delay time can be shortened via control of the exoskeleton robot. Before using a lower limb exoskeleton to help in walking, the aim of this work is to distinguish the walking environment and gait period using various sensors, including the surface electromyography(sE MG) sensor. For this purpose, a gait experiment was performed on four subjects using the ground reaction force, human–robot interaction force, and position sensors with sEMG sensors. The purpose of this paper is to show progress with the use of sEMG when recognizing walking environments and the gait period with other sensors. For effective data design, we used a combination of sensor types, sEMG sensor locations, and sEMG features. The results obtained using an individual mechanical sensor together with sEMG showed improvement compared to the case of using an individual sensor, and the combination of sEMG and position information showed the best performance in the same number of combinations of three sensors. When four sensor combinations were used, the environment classification accuracy was 96.1%, and the gait period classification accuracy was 97.8%. Vastus medialis(VM) and gastrocnemius(GAS) were the most effective combinations of two muscle types among the five sEMG sensor locations on the legs, and the results were 74.4% in pre-heel contact(preHC) and 71.7% in pre-toe-off(preTO) for environment classification, and 68.0% for gait period classification, when using only the sE MG sensor. Roles of somatic A-type K^+ channels in the synaptic plasticity of hippocampal neurons

In the mammalian brain, information encoding and storage have been explained by revealing the cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity at various levels in the central nervous system, including the hippocampus and the cerebral cortices. The modulatory mechanisms of synaptic excitability that are correlated with neuronal tasks are fundamental factors for synaptic plasticity, and they are dependent on intracellular Ca2＋-mediated signaling. In the present review, the A-type K＋（IA） channel, one of the voltage-dependent cation channels, is considered as a key player in the modulation of Ca2＋ influx through synaptic NMDA receptors and their correlated signaling pathways. The cellular functions of IA channels indicate that they possibly play as integral parts of synaptic and somatic complexes, completing the initiation and stabilization of memory.
