Dear Editor,Non-small cell lung carcinoma(NSCLC)accounts for more than 85%of all lung cancers[1].Lung adenocarcinomas(ADCs)arising from never-smokers have been frequently found to be associated with oncogenic driver mutations,including anaplastic lymphoma kinase(ALK)*** microtubule-associated protein-like 4(EML4)is the most common fusion partner of the ALK gene[2].Tyrosine kinase inhibitors(TKIs)are currently the first-line treatment for advanced EML4-ALKrearranged lung ADC.

This article recounts China’s renminbi(RMB)internationalisation experiences since the 2009 RMB cross-border trade settlement *** the first few years,the RMB made inroads into global financial markets and had a few remarkable accomplishments,including the Special Drawing Right currency *** the 2015 market turmoil,RMB internationalisation has levelled off–possibly due to changes in both domestic and geopolitical *** RMB is currently under-represented in the global ***’s deliberate and schematic policies will elevate the RMB’s global stature in a gradual manner but there will not be a leapfrogging in the near term.

In this study, bamboo scaffolding was used to produce activated carbon by carbonization at 600 ℃ and 900 ℃with the purge of nitrogen. The 600 ℃ char was then further modified chemically by acids and alkalis by reflux for 6 hours. The produced chars were then characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherm, He pyncometry, pH, elemental analysis and Boehm titration. For most of the chemically modified carbons, the micropore surface areas and volumes have increased compared with the 600 ~C char, while the mesopore surface areas and volumes slightly decreased, which may have been due to the dissolving of some of the permeated inorganic matter and oxidizing deposited carbon that blocks the pore openings. For the acidic modified carbons, larger amounts of acidic groups were present in the carbons after being activated by phosphoric acid, phosphoric acid furth, er treated with 2 mol-L-1nitric-acid, and calcium hydroxide. Although carbon treated with 2 mol.L-1 and 5 mol·L-1 nitric acid also produced high acidity, the surface areas and pore volumes were relatively low, due to the destruction of pores by nitric acid oxidation. The reduction of porosity may impair the adsorption capacity.

Outcome analysis of management of liver trauma: A 10-year experience at a trauma center

AIM: To review the outcomes of liver trauma in patients with hepatic injuries only and in patients with associated injuries outside the ***: Data of liver trauma patients presented to our center from January 2003 to October 2013 were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of patients who had hepatic injuries only. Group 2 consisted of patients who also had associated injuries outside the ***: Seven(30.4%) patients in group 1 and 10(28.6%) patients in group 2 received non-operative management; the rest underwent operation. Blunt trauma occurred in 82.8%(48/58) of the patients and penetrative trauma in 17.2%(10/58). A higher injury severity score(ISS) was observed in group 2(median 45 vs 25, P < 0.0001). More patients in group 1 were hemodynamically stable(65.2% vs 37.1%, P = 0.036). Other parameters were comparable between groups. Group 1 had better 30-d survival(91.3% vs 71.4%, P = 0.045). On multivariate analysis using the logistic regression model, ISS was found to be associated with mortality(P = 0.004, hazard ratio = 1.035, 95%CI:CONCLUSION: Liver trauma patients with multiple injuries are relatively unstable on presentation. Despite a higher ISS in group 2, non-operative management was possible for selected patients. Associated injuries outside the liver usually account for morbidity and mortality.

Objective： Focused Abdominal Sono graphy for Trauma （FAST） is widely used for the detection of intraperitoneal free fluids in patients suffering from blunt abdominal trauma （BAT）. This study aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of this investigation in a designated trauma centre. Methods： This was a retrospective study of BAT pa tients over a 6 year period seen in a trauma centre in Hong Kong. FAST findings were compared with laparotomy, ab dominal computed tomography or autopsy findings, which served as the gold standard for presence of intraperi toneal free fluids. The patients who did not have FAST or gold standard confirmatory test performed, had preexisting peritoneal fluid, died at resuscitation or had imcomplete docu mentation of FAST findings were excluded. The performance of FAST was expressed as sensitivity, specificity, predictive values （PV）, likelihood ratios （LR） and accuracy. Results： FAST was performed in 302 patients and 153 of them were included in this analysis. The sensitivity, specificity, positive PV, negative PV, positive LR, negative LR and accuracy for FAST were respectively 50.0%, 97.3%, 87.0%, 84.6%, 18.8, 0.5 and 85.0%. FAST was found to be more sensitive in less severely injured patients and more specific in more severely injured patients. Conclusion： FAST is a reliable investigation in the initial assessment of BAT patients. The diagnostic values of FAST could be affected by the severity of injury and staff training is needed to further enhance its effective use.

This study examines the long-term variations of tropical cyclone(TC) frequency and intensity in the South China Sea(SCS) and the vicinity of Hong Kong from 1961 to 2010 based on the best track data of four main weather agencies in the western North Pacific, namely the Hong Kong Observatory, China Meteorological Administration, Regional Specialized Meteorological Center Tokyo and Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the United States. To account for the discrepancy in the best track data between agencies, the maximum sustained wind speeds are standardized to the 10-minute average before data analysis. Moreover, a sensitivity assessment based on three different data scenarios is also conducted to study the uncertainty in trend analysis due to the discrepancy in the datasets from various agencies. The results show that, likely modulated by the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, there exist strong inter-annual and inter-decadal variations in the TC frequency in the SCS and the vicinity of Hong *** the long-term trend, all dataset/scenario combinations depict a decrease in the TC frequency in the SCS and the vicinity of Hong Kong during the study period, but the trend is not statistically significant at 5% level for most of the datasets. As for the TC intensity, the discrepancy between weather agencies remains very substantial even when the difference in the wind speed averaging period is accounted for. The large differences in the available datasets do not allow for a reliable detection of the long-term trend of the TC intensity in the SCS. The study of the TC impacts on Hong Kong reveals that there is no significant trend on the TC-induced extreme rainfall in Hong Kong. The extreme high winds associated with TCs within 500 km range of Hong Kong have no significant trend at Waglan Island(offshore island) while those of the urban station at Kai Tak have a signifi-cant decreasing trend.

Background:Postoperative pneumocephalus is associated with a higher risk of recurrence of chronic subdural hematoma(cSDH).However,there is no verified simple way to measure the pneumocephalus volume at the bedside for daily clinical *** ABC/2 method was shown to be a simple and reliable technique to estimate volumes of intracranial lesions,such as intracranial *** study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the ABC/2 formula in estimating volumes of pneumocephalus,as compared to the gold standard with computer-assisted volumetric ***:A total of 141 postoperative computed tomographic(CT)brain scans of cSDH patients with burr-hole drainage were *** volume was measured independently by both the ABC/2 formula and the computer-assisted volumetric *** the computer-assisted measurement,the volume of the air was semiautomatically segmented and calculated by computer *** regression was used to determine the correlation between the ABC/2 method and computer-assisted ***:The postoperative pneumocephalus volume after bilateral burr-hole drainage was significantly larger than that of unilateral burr-hole drainage(29.34 ml versus 12.21 ml,p<0.001).The estimated volumes by the formula ABC/2 significantly correlated to the volumes as measured by the computer-assisted volumetric technique,with r=0.992(p<0.001).The Pearson correlation coefficient is very close to 1,which signifies a very strong positive correlation,and it is statistically ***:An excellent correlation is observed between the ABC/2 method and the computer-assisted *** study verified that the ABC/2 method is an accurate and simple"bedside"technique to estimate pneumocephalus volume.

Objective：This study was to investigate the variables in bone marrow harvesting procedure and individual donor factors which can potentially affect the yield of mesenchymal stromal cells（MSC）.Methods：We determined the yield of MSC from bone marrow under different clinical conditions by comparing the MSC colony numbers from：（1） donors of different ages;（2） healthy donors and patients with leukemia;（3） bone marrow aspirated at different time points during marrow harvesting;（4） bone marrow harvested by different ***：During the process of harvesting,the number of MSC significantly decreased with increase number of aspiration,from 675/ml at the initial decreased to 60/ml after 100 ml bone marrow aspirated,and 50/ml after 200 ml bone marrow *** number of MSC retrieved from leukemia patients（99/ml bone marrow） was significantly lower than that of healthy donors（708/ml bone marrow）.However,there was no significant difference in growth *** was no significant age-related difference of MSC yielded from donors 55 *** there was no significant difference in MSC number between the samples from single end-holed needle and those from multiple-side-hole ***：The optimal bone marrow samples for MSC collection should be obtained earlier in the process of harvesting *** marrow from donors 55 years was equally good as MSC *** autologous MSC from leukemia patients can be utilized for in-vitro MSC expansion.
