The unique properties of metal oxide surfaces,crystal surfaces and defects play vital roles in biomass upgrading *** this work,hierarchical porous bowl-shaped ZrO_(2)(HB-ZrO_(2))with mixed crystal phase was designed and employed as the support for loading AuPd bimetal with different proportions to synthesize AuPd/HB-ZrO_(2) *** effects of surface chemistry,oxygen defects,bimetal interaction and metal-support interaction of AuPd/HB-ZrO_(2) on catalytic performance for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF)to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA)were systematically *** Au 2 Pd1/HB-ZrO_(2) catalyst afforded a satisfactory FDCA yield of 99.9%from HMF oxidation using O_(2) as the oxidant in water,accompanied with an excellent FDCA productivity at 97.6 mmol g^(−1) h^(−1).This work offers fresh insights into rationally designing efficient catalysts with oxygen-rich defects for the catalytic upgrading of biomass platform chemicals.

In recent years,organic solar cells(OSCs)have garnered significant attention due to their distinctive attributes,such as flexibility,lightweight,and solution processing,which position them as alternatives for next-generation solar technologies[1−5].Thanks to breakthroughs in materials development,the power conversion efficiency(PCE)for single-junction OSCs has already surpassed 19%[6−13].The development of photoactive materials is pivotal in enhancing the PCEs,and several reviews have provided insights into materials design[14−18].Herein,we highlight single-junction OSCs based on D18 and its derivatives[19,20].

Metallic zinc is an excellent anode material for Zn-ion batteries,but the growth of Zn dendrite severely hinders its practical ***,an efficient and economical cationic additive,poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium(PDDA) was reported,used in aqueous Zn-ion batteries electrolyte for stabilizing Zn *** growth of zinc dendrites can be significantly restrained by benefiting from the pronounced electrostatic shielding effect from PDDA on the Zn metal ***,the PDDA is preferentially absorbed on Zn(002) plane,thus preventing unwanted side reactions on Zn *** to the introduction of a certain amount of PDDA additive into the common ZnSO_(4)-based electrolyte,the cycle life of assembled Zn‖Zn cells(1 mA·cm^(-2) and 1 mAh·cm^(-2)) is prolonged to more than 1100 *** response to the perforation issue of Zn electrodes caused by PDDA additives,the problem can be solved by combining foamy copper with zinc *** real application,Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors and MnO_(2)‖Zn cells were assembled,which exhibited excellent cycling stability with PDDA *** work provides a new solution and perspective to cope with the dendrite growth problem of Zn anode.

Common Cuckoos(Cuculus canorus)dependent on parental care for post-hatching demonstrate an intriguing ability to modify their begging vocalizations to ensure maximum care and resources from their interspecific foster ***,we compared begging calls of the Common Cuckoo nestlings fed by four host species,the Grey Bushchat(Saxicola ferreus),Siberian Stonechat(Saxicola maurus),Daurian Redstart(Phoenicurus auroreus),and Oriental Magpie-robin(Copsychus saularis).Results showed that begging calls of the stonechat-,redstart-,and robin-cuckoo resemble those of host species'nestlings in various aspects like low frequency,high frequency,frequency bandwidth and peak frequency,while the bushchat-cuckoo chicks'begging calls were only comparable to their host species in terms of how long they lasted and their peak *** addition,cuckoo nestlings raised in different host nests displayed significant variations in their begging calls in low and peak *** study suggests that cuckoo nestlings do not mimic host species nestlings'begging calls throughout the nestling period,but may tune their begging calls according to host species,while begging calls vary with cuckoo and host species nestlings'*** research should study the parents'reactions to these calls in different host species for a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying such adaptations.

Si-based materials have shown great potential as lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)anodes due to their natural reserves and high theoretical ***,the large volume changes during cycles and poor conductivity of Si lead to rapid capacity decay and poor cycling stability,ultimately limiting their commercial ***,we have skillfully utilized the microporous MCM-22 zeolite as the unique silicon source to produce porous Si(pSi)sheets by a simple magnesiothermic reduction,followed by a carbon coating and further Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)MXene assembly,obtaining the ternary pSi@NC@TNSs *** the design,porous Si sheets provide more active sites and shorten Li-ion transport paths for electrochemical *** N-doped carbon(NC)layer serves as a bonding layer to couple pSi and Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x).The conductive network formed by 2D Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)and medium NC layer effectively enhances the overall charge transport of the electrode material,and helps to stabilize the electrode ***,the as-made pSi@NC@TNSs anode delivers an improved lithium storage performance,exhibiting a high reversible capacity of 925 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g after 100 *** present strategy provides an effective way towards high-performance Si-based anodes for LIBs.

Apple leaf spot,caused by the Alternaria alternata apple pathotype(AAAP),is an important fungal disease of *** understand the molecular basis of resistance and pathogenesis in apple leaf spot,the transcriptomes of two apple cultivars‘Hanfu'(HF)(resistant)and‘Golden Delicious'(GD)(susceptible)were analyzed at 0,6,18,24 and 48 h after AAAP inoculation by *** each time point,a large number of significantly differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were screened between AAAP-inoculated and uninoculated apple *** of the common DEGs at four time points revealed significant differences in the resistance of‘HF'and‘GD'apple to AAAP ***,RNL,and JA signal-related genes were upregulated in both cultivars to restrict AAAP ***,genes encoding CNLs,TNLs,WRKYs,and AP2s were only activated in‘HF'as part of the resistance response,of which,some play major roles in the regulation of ET and SA signal *** analysis showed that many DEGs with opposite expression trends in the two hosts may play important regulatory roles in response to AAAP *** expression of one such gene MdERF110 in‘GD'apple leaves improved AAAP ***,this study highlights the reasons for differential resistance to AAAP infection between‘HF'and‘GD'apples which can theoretically assist the molecular breeding of disease-resistant apple crops.

Enhanced nitrate removal from groundwater using a conductive spacer in flow-electrode capacitive deionization

Flow-electrode capacitive deionization(FCDI)represents a promising approach for ion separation from aqueous ***,the optimization of spacer,particularly for nitrate-contaminated groundwa-ter systems,has often been *** research comprehensively investigates the influence of using a conductive(carbon cloth,CC)spacer on nitrate removal performance within FCDI system,comparing it to a non-conductive(nylon net,NN)*** both CC and NN FCDI systems,it is unsurprisingly that nitrate removal efficiency improved notably with the increasing current density and hydraulic retention time(HRT).Interestingly,the specific energy consumption(SEC)for nitrate removal did not show obvious fluctuations when the current density and HRT varied in both *** the auspiciously optimized process parameters,CC-FCDI attained a 20%superior nitrate removal efficiency relative to NN-FCDI,ac-companied by a notably diminished SEC for CC-FCDI,registering at a mere 28%of *** great improvement can be primarily attributed to the decrement in FCDI internal resistance after using con-ductive spacer,which further confirmed by electrochemical tests such as linear sweep voltammetry(LSV)and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).Upon prolonged continuous nitrate removal at the optimized conditions,the CC-FCDI system achieved a consistent 90%nitrate removal efficiency with a low SEC of 2.7-7.8 kWh/kg NO_(3)-N,underscoring its steady ***,this study highlights the pivotal importance of careful spacer design and optimization in realizing energy-efficient groundwater treatment via FCDI.

Controlling the shape and composition of Pt-based nanocrystals is essential to improve electrocatalytic *** this work,we have carefully investigated the evolution process of morphology and composition for Pt and Pt_(3)M(M=Ni,Co)nanocrystals by hydrochloric acid(HCl)*** a result,only Pt_(3)Ni nanocrystals successfully formed unsaturated step-like atoms on the surface and then constructed high-index facets(HIFs),while Pt and Pt_(3)Co preserved a good octahedron *** functional theory(DFT)calculation suggests that Cl-ions can be tightly adsorbed on the surface of Pt_(3)Ni rather than other nanocrystals,which hinders the deposition of newly-reduced atoms and thus regulating the surface ***,the etching of surface transitional metals further accelerates the formation of *** by the active sites on the surface,HCl-Pt-Ni exhibited a~10.8 and~11.3 times higher oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)mass and specific activities than commercial Pt/C catalyst,and possessed a good durability after 10,000 cycles *** work gives a deep insight into the design of high-performance Pt-based ORR catalysts.

Cancer is a major global health issue;in 2020,there were 19.29 million new cancer cases and 9.96 million cancer deaths worldwide(Siegel et al.,2023).Despite ongoing research,chemotherapy remains the primary treatment due to its broad anti-cancer effects(Marra and Curigliano,2021).However,intravenous chemotherapeutic drugs commonly induce hematotoxicity,necessitating dose adjustments or treatment ***-induced thrombocytopenia(CIT)and neutropenia(CIN)are the primary manifestations of chemotherapy-induced hematotoxicity,which requires intervention due to the heightened risk of bleeding and infection(Blayney and Schwartzberg,2022).Currently,there are no FDA-approved treatments for CIT(Song and Al-Samkari,2023).While a CIT mouse model using 5-FU has been developed for drug evaluation(Shin et al.,2023),it lacks a comprehensive hematotoxicity assessment and the benefits of high throughput,cost-effectiveness,and ***,it is urgent to develop a high-throughput CIT model for risk assessment and safer chemotherapy strategies with clinical potential.
