Anatase TiO2(001) surface arouses lots of research interests since it is believed to be the most reactive surface. However, recent STM measurements showed that except the defect sites, anatase TiO2(001) (1×4) reconstructed surface is inert to H2O adsorption. It was indicated that oxidation could be the reason which induces the inert surface reactivity. Therefore, it is strongly motivated to understand the oxidation structures as well as the oxidation process on this surface. In this work, based on first principles calculations, we investigated the oxidized structures and processes of TiO2 anatase (001) surface with (1×4) reconstruction. We have discovered two kinds of oxidized structures through the molecular adsorption and dissociated adsorption with different oxidation ratio. To understand the oxidation process, we studied the reaction barrier of oxidation process. We conclude the stability of different oxidized structures with different oxidation ratio by comparing the free energy of the system as a function of oxygen chemical potential. Based on that, a first-principles-based phase diagram of the low-energy oxidized surface structures is provided. The effects of the lattice stress are also studied. Results show that the oxidized structure and oxidation ratio strongly depend on the temperature and pressure. The lattice stress also plays an important role.

Numerical Study of Two Opposing Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes by the Self-consistent Field Theory

The self-consistent field theory(SCFT)was employed to numerically study the interaction and interpenetration between two opposing weak polyelectrolyte(PE)brushes formed by grafting weak PE chains onto the surfaces of two long and parallel columns with rectangularshaped cross-section immersed in a salty aqueous *** dependences of the brush heights and the average degree of ionization on various system parameters were also *** the brush separation is relatively large compared with the unperturbed brush height,the degree of interpenetration between the two opposing PE brushes was found to increase with increasing grafting density and bulk degree of *** degree of interpenetration also increases with the bulk salt concentration in the osmotic brush *** results further revealed that,at a brush separation comparable to the unperturbed brush height,the degree of interpenetration does not increase further with increasing bulk degree of ionization,bulk salt concentration in the osmotic regime and grafting *** saturation of the degree of interpenetration with these system parameters indicates that the grafted PE chains in the gap between the two columns retract and tilt in order to reduce the unfavorable electrostatic and steric repulsions between the two opposing PE *** on salt ion concentrations at the midpoint between the two opposing brushes,a quantitative criterion in terms of the unperturbed brush height and Debye screening length was established to determine the threshold value of the brush separation beyond which they are truly independent from each other.

Evaluation of commutation failure risk in single-or multi-infeed LCC-HVDC systems based on equivalent-fault method

In single-or multi-infeed line-commutated converter-based high-voltage direct current(LCC-HVDC) systems, commutation failure(CF) induced by alternating current(AC) faults may lead to serious consequences. Considering the randomness of fault occurrences, an accurate evaluation of the CF risk(CFR) from the system point of view becomes necessary in power system planning and operation. This paper first provides a definition of the CF severity(CFS) index corresponding to an AC fault. Then,on the basis of electromagnetic transient(EMT) simulation, an approach to calculate the CFS index considering the randomness of fault-occurrence time is presented. A novel equivalent-fault method is further put forward to make the EMT simulation scalable to calculate the CFS index in terms of a fault occurring in a large-scale receiving-end grid. Thereafter, the CFR index is introduced, which is defined as the sum of the products of the CFS index of each AC fault and the corresponding fault ***, the proposed method is verified on the modified IEEE 9-bus and modified IEEE 39-bus systems using PSCAD/EMTDC.

A method for seeking main bifurcation parameters of a class of nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed. The method is based on the effects of parametric varia- tion of dynamical systems on eigenvalues of the Frechet matrix. The singularity theory is used to study the engineering unfolding （EU） and the universal unfolding （UU） of an arch structure model, respectively. Unfolding parameters of EU are combination of concerned physical parameters in actual engineering, and equivalence of unfolding parameters and physical parameters is verified. Transient sets and bifurcation behaviors of EU and UU are compared to illustrate that EU can reflect main bifurcation characteristics of non- linear systems in engineering. The results improve the understanding and the scope of applicability of EU in actual engineering systems when UU is difficult to be obtained.

The impact of urban planning on land use and land cover in Pudong of Shanghai, China

Functional zones in cities constitute the most conspicuous components of newly developed urban areas, and have been a hot spot for domestic and foreign investors in China, which not only show the expanse of urban space accompanied by the shifts both in landscape (from rural to urban) and land use(from less extensive to extensive), but also display the transformation of regional ecological functions. By using the theories and methods of landscape ecology, the structure of landscapes and landscape ecological planning can be analyzed and evaluated for studying the urban functional zones' layout. In 1990, the Central Government of China declared to develop and open up Pudong New Area so as to promote economic development in Shanghai. Benefited from the advantages of Shanghai's location and economy, the government of Pudong New Area has successively built up 7 different functional zones over the past decade according to their functions and strategic goals. Based on the multi-spectral satellite imageries taken in 1990, 1997 and 2000, a landscape ecology analysis was carried out for Pudong New Area of Shanghai, supported by GIS technology. Green space (including croplands) and built-up areas are the major factors considered in developing urban landscape. This paper was mainly concerned with the different spatial patterns and dynamics of green space, built-up areas and new buildings in different functional zones, as influenced by different functional layouts and development strategies. The rapid urbanization in Pudong New Area resulted in a more homogeneous landscape. Agricultural landscape and suburban landscape were gradually replaced by urban landscape as the degree of urbanization increased. As a consequence of urbanization in Pudong, not only built-up patches, but also newly-built patches and green patches merged into one large patch, which should be attributed to the construction policy of extensive green space as the urban development process in Pudong New Area. Rhinogobius immaculatus, a new species of freshwater goby (Teleostei Gobiidae) from the Qiantang River, China

A new freshwater goby, Rhinogobius immaculatus sp. nov., is described here from the Qiantang River in China. It is distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of characters： second dorsal-fin rays I, 7-9; anal-fin rays I, 6-8; pectoral-fin rays 14-15; longitudinal scales 29-31; transverse scales 7-9; predorsal scales 2-5; vertebrae 27 （rarely 28）; preopercular canal absent or with two pores; a red oblique stripe below eye in males; branchiostegal membrane mostly reddish-orange, with 3-6 irregular discrete or connected red blotches on posterior branchiostegal membrane and lower operculum in males; caudal-fin base with a median black spot; and no black blotch on anterior part of first dorsal fin in males.

Characterization of Bacterial Community Structure and Diversity in Rhizosphere Soils of Three Plants in Rapidly Changing Salt Marshes Using 16S rDNA

The structure and diversity of the bacterial communities in rhizosphere soils of native Phragmites australis and Scirpus rnariqueter and alien Spartina alterniflora in the Yangtze River Estuary were investigated by constructing 16S ribosomal DNA （rDNA） clone libraries. The bacterial diversity was quantified by placing the clones into operational taxonomic unit （OTU） groups at the level of sequence similarity of 〉 97%. Phylogenetic analysis of the resulting 398 clone sequences indicated a high diversity of bacteria in the rhizosphere soils of these plants. The members of Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Deltaproteobacteria of the phylum Proteobacteria were the most abundant in rhizobacteria. Chao 1 nonpaxametric diversity estimator coupled with the reciprocal of Simpson＇s index （l/D） was applied to sequence data obtained from each library to evaluate total sequence diversity and quantitatively compare the level of dominance. The results showed that Phragmites, Scirpus, and Spartina rhizosphere soils contained 200, 668, and 382 OTUs, respectively. The bacterial communities in the Spartina and Phragraites rhizosphere soils displayed species dominance revealed by 1/D, whereas the bacterial community in Scirpus rhizosphere soil had uniform distributions of species abundance. Overall, analysis of 16S rDNA clone libraries from the rhizosphere soils indicates that the changes in bacterial composition may occur concomitantly with the shift of species composition in plant communities.
