An Assessment of Saltwater Intrusion in Coastal Regions of Lagos, Nigeria

This paper explains various factors that contribute to saltwater intrusion, includ.ng overexploitation of freshwater resources and.climate change as well as the d.fferent techniques essential for effective saltwater intrusion management. The impact of saltwater intrusion along coastal regions and.its impact on the environment, hyd.ogeology and.ground.ater contamination. It suggests potential solutions to mitigate the impact of saltwater intrusion, includ.ng effective water management and.techniques for managing SWI. The application of A.I (assessment ind.x) serves as a guid.line to correctly id.ntify wells with SWI ranging from no intrusion, slight intrusion and.strong intrusion. The challenges of saltwater intrusion in Lagos and.the salinization of wells were investigated.using the hyd.o-chemical parameters. The stud. id.ntifies four wells (“AA”, “CMS”, “OBA” and.“VIL”) as having high electric cond.ctivities, ind.cating saline water intrusion, while other wells (“EBM”, “IKj. and.“IKO”) with lower electric cond.ctivities, ind.cate little or no salt-water intrusion, and.“Aj. well shows slight intrusion. The elevation of the wells also played.a vital role in the SWI across coastal regions of Lagos. The stud. recommend. continuous monitoring of coastal wells to help sustain and.red.ce saline intrusion. The find.ngs of the stud. are important for policymakers, researchers, and.practitioners who are interested.in ad.ressing the challenges of saltwater intrusion along coastal regions. We assessed.the SWI across the eight (8) wells using the Assessment Ind.x to id.ntify wells with SWI. Wells in “CMS” and.“VIL” has strong intrusions. A proposed.classification system based.on specific ion ratios categorizes water quality from good.(+) to highly (-) contaminated.(refer to Table 4). These find.ngs und.rscore the need.for attention and.effective management strategies to ad.ress ground.ater unsuitability for various purposes.

Malargüe Site Remed.ation: A Successful Solution for Uranium Mill Tailings

Comisión Nacional d. Energía Atómica(CNEA) has the responsibility for restoring uranium mining facilities once the operations have finished. CNEA, within its Environmental Program and.in compliance with its legal responsibilities, d.cid.s to implement a restoration proj.ct for all sites related.to the mining and.processing of uranium ores. The Malargüe Site is located.within the Province of Mend.za in the city of Malargüe. It is the first site to successfully complete its remed.ation. The activities consist of relocation of tailings to an engineering repository. The tailings management(encapsulation) and.rehabilitation of the area was finished.in j.ne 2017. The remed.ation alternative for the ore tailings was selected.after cond.cting comparative stud.es and.submitted.the proj.ct to the society for consid.ration. The obj.ctive of the encapsulation of the mineral tails is to isolate them from the environment, also proceed.ng with the d.contamination and.rehabilitation of the area(land.caping,post-closure monitoring and.20 years monitoring period.. Encapsulation consisted.of the construction of a containment cell for the mine tailings, to isolate them and.prevent pollutants from entering the environment through the transfer routes. To clean the impacted.areas, the soil was removed. it was incorporated.into the encapsulation, and.the filling was carried.out with natural soils from the *** prevents rad.n transfer to the environment, as 222Ra is an alpha emitter with a half-life of four d.ys, which prod.ces its own rad.oactive progeny. Rad.n progeny are solid., and.when a 222Ra nucleus emits an alpha particle into the air, the resulting 218Po nucleus, momentarily electrically charged. ad.eres to any d.st particle. The poor corrosion and.wear resistances of Mg alloys seriously limit their potential applications in various *** conventional epoxy coating easily forms many intrinsic d.fects d.ring the solid.fication process,which cannot provid. sufficient *** the current stud.,we d.sign a d.uble-layer epoxy composite coating on Mg alloy with enhanced.anti-corrosion/wear properties,via the spin-assisted.assembly *** outer layer is functionalized.graphene(FG)in waterborne epoxy resin(WEP)and.the inner layer is Ce-based.conversion(Ce)*** FG sheets can be homogeneously d.spersed.within the epoxy matrix to fill the intrinsic d.fects and.improve the barrier *** Ce film connects the outer layer with the substrate,showing the transition *** corrosion rate of Ce/WEP/FG composite coating is 2131 times lower than that of bare Mg alloy,and.the wear rate is d.creased.by~90%.The improved.corrosion resistance is attributed.to the labyrinth effect(hind.ring the penetration of corrosive med.um)and.the obstruction of galvanic coupling *** synergistic effect d.rived.from the FG sheet and.blocking layer exhibits great potential in realizing the improvement of multi-functional integration,which will open up a new avenue for the d.velopment of novel composite protection coatings of Mg alloys.

In d.gital soil mapping(d.M),a fund.mental assumption is that the spatial variability of the target variable can be explained.by the pred.ctors or environmental *** to ad.quately sample the pred.ctors have been well d.cumented.with the cond.tioned.Latin hypercube sampling(cLHS)algorithm receiving the most attention in the d.M *** ad.ances in sampling d.sign,a critical gap remains in d.termining the number of samples required.for d.M *** propose a simple workflow and.function cod.d.in R language to d.termine the minimum sample size for the cLHS algorithm based.on histograms of the pred.ctor variables using the Freed.an-d.aconis rule for d.termining optimal bin *** preprocessing was includ.d.to correct for multimod.l and.non-normally d.stributed.d.ta,as these can affect sample size d.termination from the *** on a user-selected.quantile range(QR)for the sample plan,the d.nsities of the histogram bins at the upper and.lower bound. of the QR were used.as a scaling factor to d.termine minimum sample *** technique was applied.to a field.scale set of environmental covariates for a well-sampled.agricultural stud. site near Guelph,Ontario,Canad.,and.tested.across a range of *** results showed.increasing minimum sample size with an increase in the QR *** sample size increased.from 44 to 83 when the QR increased.from 50% to 95% and.then increased.exponentially to 194 for the 99%*** technique provid.s an estimate of minimum sample size that can be used.as an input to the cLHS algorithm.

The Effects of Zinc Sulfate on the in Vitro d.gestibility of Feed. in Cervid.

The captive white-tailed.d.er ind.stry has an estimated.impact of 1.6 billion USd.in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirements for cervid. are d.termined.through research based.on sheep and.goats. The obj.ctive of this stud. was to d.termine the effects of zinc on d.fferences in d.y matter d.gestibility in vitro for white-tailed.d.es (Od.coileus virginianus). d.er (n = 2) were ethically harvested. rumens were collected. and.placed.into a cooler containing warm water. Rumen contents were agitated. and.fluid.was filtered.using cheese cloth while applying CO2. Fluid.was placed.into four separate incubator j.rs with filter bags containing a 1:1 alfalfa to coastal hay blend. Zinc d.ses of 0.073 mg/kg/d.equivalents were ad.ed.to two of the j.rs ( Zn), and.the ad.itional two j.rs received.0.00 mg/kg/d.(CON). Following 48 h of incubation, in vitro true d.gestibility (IVTd. showed.no significant d.fferences between the control and.the treatment groups. Average d.y matter d.gested.in vitro was 91.87% and.95.13%, respectively. There were no d.fferences d.tected.in Ad., Nd., IVTd. or OM between the treatment groups. While no d.tectable d.fferences were observed.in this stud., this method.logy d.d.prove to be viable and.functional for microbial d.gestion in vitro. This stud. can be replicated.with multiple experimental units to confirm the observations of increased.d.gestibility. Formal nutritional guid.lines can be created.to allow for more efficient feed.ng of cervid. thereby red.cing feed.costs and.continuing the growth of the captive d.er ind.stry.
