Circular patterns, or eyespots, are common anti-predator features in a variety of animals. Two defensive functions have been documented： large eyespots may intimidate predators, whereas smaller marginal eyespots may divert attacks. However, a given eyespot potentially serves both functions, possibly depending on the predator＇s size and/or experience. Naive predators are potentially more likely to misdirect their attacks towards eyespots; alternatively, their typically smaller size would make them more intimidated by the same eyespots. Here we test how juvenile and sub-adult naive chickens respond to a single eyespot on a butterfly＇s wing. We presented the birds with dead wall brown butterflies, Lasiommata megera, that had their apical eyespot visible or painted over. We assessed the birds＇ responses＇ by （i） scoring their intimidation reaction, （ii） whether they uttered alarm calls and, （iii） if they attacked the butterfly and where they targeted their attacks. Results show that both age categories received higher intimidation scores when offered a butterfly with a visible eyespot. Juveniles were more intimidated by the butterfly than the sub-adults： they received higher intimidation scores and were more prone to utter alarm calls. Moreover, only sub-adults at- tacked and did so by preferentially attacking the butterfly＇s anterior. We demonstrate an intimidating effect of the type of eyespot that has previously been shown only to divert attacks. We suggest that one and the same eyespot may serve two functions relative to different predators; however, further experiments are needed to disentangle the role of predator identity and its link to size, on- togeny and experience [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 749-757, 2015].

Automotive brake rotors are commonly made from gray cast iron(GCI).During usage,brake rotors are gradually worn off and periodically ***,replaced brake rotors are mostly remelted to produce brand-new cast iron products,resulting in a relatively high energy consumption and carbon footprint into the *** addition,automotive brakes emit airborne *** of the emitted particles are categorized as ultrafine,which are sized below 100 nm,leading to a series of health and environmental *** this study,two surface treatment techniques are applied,ie.,high-velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF)and laser cladding(LC),to overlay wear-resistant coatings on conventional GCI brake rotors in order to refurbish the replaced GCI brake rotor and to avoid the remelting *** two coating materials are evaluated in terms of their coefficient of friction(CoF),wear,and ultrafine particle emissions,by comparing them with a typical GCI brake *** results show that the CoF of the HVOF disc is higher than those of the GCI and LC ***,HVOF disc has the lowest wear rate but results in the highest wear rate on the mating brake pad *** LC disc yields a similar wear rate as the GCI *** ultrafine particles from the GCI and LC discs appeared primarily in round,chunky,and flake *** HVOF disc emits unique needle-shaped *** the ultrafine particle range,the GCI and HVOF discs generate particles that are primarily below 100 nm in the running-in period and 200 nm in the steady ***,the LC disc emitted particles that are primarily~200 nm in the entire test run.

The transmission of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has presented challenges for the control of the indoor environment of isolation *** air distribution design and operation management are crucial to ensure the environmental safety of medical *** paper proposes the application of adaptive wall-based attachment ventilation and evaluates this air supply mode based on contaminants dispersion,removal efficiency,thermal comfort,and operating *** wall-based attachment ventilation provides a direct supply of fresh air to the occupied *** comparison with a ceiling air supply or upper sidewall air supply,adaptive wall-based attachment ventilation results in a 15%–47%lower average concentration of contaminants,for a continual release of contaminants at the same air changes per hour(ACH;10 h^(-1)).The contaminant removal efficiency of complete mixing ventilation cannot exceed *** adaptive wall-based attachment ventilation,the contaminant removal efficiency is an exponential function of the *** with the ceiling air supply mode or upper sidewall air supply mode,adaptive wall-based attachment ventilation achieves a similar thermal comfort level(predicted mean vote(PMV)of0.1–0.4;draught rate of 2.5%–6.7%)and a similar performance in removing contaminants,but has a lower ACH and uses less energy.

Exploiting high-energy electron beams colliding into high-intensity laser pulses brings an opportunity to reach high values of the dimensionless rest-frame acceleration χ and thereby invoke processes described by strong-field quantum electrodynamics(SFQED).Measuring deviations from the results of Furry-picture perturbation theory in SFQED at high χ can be valuable for testing existing predictions,as well as for guiding further theoretical ***,such experimental measurements are challenging due to the probabilistic nature of the interaction processes,dominating signals of low-χ interactions and limited capabilities to control and measure the alignment and synchronization in such collision *** we elaborate a methodology of using approximate Bayesian computations for drawing statistical inferences based on the results of many repeated experiments despite partially unknown collision parameters that vary between *** a proof-of-principle,we consider the problem of inferring the effective mass change due to coupling with the strong-field environment.

Introduction: Iron deficiency (ID) is often present (32% - 65%) in patients with heart failure (HF). Oral iron absorption in patients with HF is generally poor. This is the reason why oral treatment is not recommended. Aim: To test whether oral iron succinate significantly increases iron deposits in non-anaaemic patients with HF. Methods: ID was defined as ferritin 2+ plus 100 mg succinate) in the morning and one tablet at bedtime for at least 3 months. Hemoglobin, CRP, ferritin, iron, TSAT, and hepcidin were analyzed before starting treatment, at 6 weeks, and at 3 months end of study (EOS). Results: Five women and 15 men were included in the study. The level of ferritin increased significantly from baseline to 6 weeks (47 to 78 μg/L, p = 0.009) and baseline to EOS (47 to 85 μg/L, p = 0.001). TSAT increased significantly from baseline to 6 weeks (20% to 27%, p = 0.046) and baseline to EOS (20% to 25%, p = 0.043). Hepcidin increased significantly from baseline to 6 weeks (2.5 nmol/L to 4.8 nmol/L, p = 0.006) and baseline to EOS (2.5 to 4.2 nmol/L, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Oral iron succinate significantly increased iron uptake, almost doubling the ferritin levels and increasing the TSAT, in patients with HF. Our findings challenge the opinion that oral iron treatment cannot significantly increase iron deposits in non-anemic patients with ID and HF.

Hospital Delivery Room versus Outdoor Birthing Place: Differences in Airborne Microorganisms and Their Impact on the Infant

The incidence of allergic airway diseases continues to increase in industrial countries while remaining much more stable in developing countries. Allergens inhaled are eventually also swallowed and evidently the gastrointestinal immune system has a role in regulating allergic responses in the pulmonary as well as the GI system. While some studies have pointed out the role of probiotic bacteria as a supplementary protection against the early development of various allergies, little attention has been paid to the composition of the airborne microflora first and continuosly inhaled by newborns and infants. This study compares the composition of two airborne microbial communities, one from hospital delivery rooms and the other from a nature reserve, evidently in use as a birthing place as early as 7500 B.C. around the air from the outdoor birthing place was marked by a far greater variation in microbial composition and a much higher representation of fungi than the air from the hospitals. The dominant bacterial species from the delivery rooms were Staphylococcus areus and Micrococcus luteus, originating from the staff and the hospital environment;the outdoor flora, however, was dominated by Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus spp. In addition, 56% of all the bacterial isolates from the delivery rooms were most closely related to strains previously associated with clinical infections, whereas only 15% of isolates in the outdoor bacterial sample had such relationships. The role of airborne microorganisms could be important to infants with developing immune systems considering the microbial bias of hospital air presented in this study.

Artemisia annua L. produces small amounts of the sesquiterpenoid artemisinin, which is used for treatment of malaria. A worldwide shortage of the drug has led to intense research to increase the yield of artemisinin in the plant. In order to study the regulation of expression of a key enzyme of artemisinin biosynthesis, the promoter region of the key enzyme amorpha-4,11-diene synthase (ADS) was cloned and fused with the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene. Transgenic plants of A. annua expressing this fusion were generated and studied. Transgenic plants expressing the GUS gene were used to establish the activity of the cloned promoter by a GUS activity staining procedure. GUS under the control of the ADS promoter showed specific expression in glandular trichomes. The activity of the ADS promoter varies temporally and in old tissues essentially no GUS staining could be observed. The expression pattern of GUS and ADS in aerial parts of the transgenic plant was essentially the same indicating that the cis-elements controlling glandular trichome specific expression are included in the cloned promoter. However, some cis-element(s) that control expression in root and old leaf appears to be missing in the cloned promoter. Furthermore, qPCR was used to compare the activity of the wild-type ADS promoter with that of the cloned ADS promoter. The latter promoter showed a considerably lower activity than the wild-type promoter as judged from the levels of GUS and ADS transcripts, respectively, which may be due to the removal of an enhancing cis-element from the ADS promoter. The ADS gene is specifically expressed in stalk and secretory cells of glandular trichomes of A. annua.
