Brinjal or eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is severely affected by bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanecearum in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Resistant varieties are most suitable option to reduce crop losses from bacterial wilt but knowledge of resistance mechanism and its inheritance is important to develop resistant varieties. Further, majority of germplasm from mainland India showed susceptible reaction under Andaman conditions. Thus, the present study was done during 2010-2012 to understand the genetic behaviour of bacterial wilt resistance in brinjal “CARI-B-1” (R) × “Pusa Purple Long” (S) in hot humid tropical climate of Andaman Islands. For this, the population from single F1 fruit was advanced to F2 and F3 and recorded the reaction of segregating population in the sick plots. The results revealed that there is preponderance of recessive gene family wherein more than one gene acts in additive mode. Another cross between S. torvum (R) × Diglipur local collection (S) also showed the recessive gene action for resistance as observed in F2 generation. Besides, the study also advocated that mechanisms of resistance, escape with early resistance and progressive escape have been found to be operating in individuals of segregating population.

Riverscape Approach and Forestry Interventions for Ganga River Rejuvenation

Rivers have been degraded globally due to various reasons over centuries and limiting their ecological health and value, including Ganga River in India. Riverscape approach can provide relevant information on riverine resources needed in river restoration programmes. We propose a conceptual riverscape model to rejuvenate the holy river Ganga in India through forestry interventions after due consideration of ecological processes, mosaic of landforms, communities and environment within the large landscape of Ganga basin. The select riverscape area includes the area of 5 km and 2 km on either side of the river Ganga and important tributaries, respectively, all along the rivers in five stakeholder states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal in the country. The width of the riverscape was taken from the maximum bank line in recent years on either side of river in the concerned state. However, all micro-watersheds in the hills of Uttarakhand state, being the origin place of river, have been included in riverscape area up to Haridwar. Here riverscape is a mosaic of different land uses viz., natural ecosystems, rural and agricultural ecosystems and built-up urban environment including flood plain and is an ecologically sustained system developed during the last 30 years due to river meandering all along the river. Geospatial modelling and GIS data on land use pattern, soil erosion rates, slope of the topography, etc. were used to classify riverscape area into high, medium and low priority areas to implement forestry interventions in delineated riverscape. Thereafter, forestry interventions were planned and carried out in three identified landscapes viz., Natural (forests), Agriculture (agroforestry), and Urban along with conservation activities. Forestry interventions in delineated riverscape are expected to increase water recharge and decrease the sedimentation load in the Ganga River and its tributaries.

Intracranial Abscesses: An Institutional Study

Background: Brain abscess is defined as a focal intracranial infection that is initiated as an area of cerebritis and evolves into a collection of pus surrounded by a vascularized capsule. These are complications of head trauma, neurosurgical operations, meningitis, and otogenic, mastoid, and paranasal air sinus infections. Management involves both medical and surgical treatment. Surgical management includes either aspiration or excision of lesions larger than 2.5 cm in diameter, depending on brain location. However, literature on surgical treatment is replete with several procedures which, on their own, may not determine outcome. Aim: Aim is to study the epidemiology, management and outcome of various treatment modalities of brain abscess in our institute. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of demographic data as well as indications, treatment modalities, and outcomes of various surgical procedures for evacuation of intracranial abscesses in patients admitted to our Neuro-intensive care unit at R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India from January 2013 to June 2019. Results: We carried out 53 procedures in 43 (30 male and 13 female) patients with various intracranial abscesses. Most abscesses [16, i.e. 37%] occurred in the second decade and second most common in the first decade [15, i.e. 34%]. In infants 4 (9%) cases of intracranial abscesses were present. None of the infants had features of congenital heart disease. The predisposing factors were mostly otolaryngologic (15) or posttraumatic (8). Most commonly abscesses were located in frontal 13 (30%) followed by cerebellar 9 (21%). Burr hole evacuation was done in 74% of cases. 3 patients (7% of cases) died. Prognosis appears to worsen with ventriculitis, multiple abscesses especially in infants, and immunosuppression. Conclusion: In conclusion, brain abscess still continues to be a formidable challenge, with prognosis that dramatically improved over the last decades due to advances

Isolated cerebral aspergillus abscess as a complication of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis in a child

Textile wastewater containing dyes are difficult to treat by conventional biological processes as most of the dyes are non-biodegradable and are toxic to the microorganisms. These dyes can be easily treated if the conventional treatment methods are incorporated with the advanced oxidation process which can break the complex structure of the dye and make it more amenable to bio-degradation. This paper reviews different Advanced Oxidation Processes （AOPs） like ozonation, hydrogen peroxide, UV radiation and their combination for comparison of treatment efficiencies for remediation of textile wastewater. The paper reveals that the treatment efficiencies of various options depends on the characteristics of the wastewater to be treated.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) poses a risk of opportunistic infections with a variety of organisms with Nocardia being the most common pathogen followed by mycobacteria and fungi. Case presentation: A 7-year-old female child, presented with headache and multiple episodes of vomiting. There was no fever or altered sensorium. On examination, there were no focal deficits or cranial nerve palsies. An MRI brain showed a small T2 hyperintense lesion in the left superior parietal lobe suggestive of an abscess. She was diagnosed as PAP based on CT chest and bronchioloalveolar lavage 7 months earlier and treated with corticosteroids. A left parieto-occipital craniotomy was done with drainage of abscess and abscess wall excision. Histopathology revealed a suppurative lesion with slender septate acute angle branching hyphae which were positive on fungal stains. Culture done on the pus was positive for Aspergil us fumigatus. The patient was treated with voriconazole and stable at 1 year follow-up. Conclusion: Opportunistic infections are common in patients diagnosed with PAP. High index of clinical suspicion and early diagnosis are important for favorable outcome.

Deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) is one of the most recent processes being used to treat tool steels. It is a supplementary treatment where components are treated below subzero temperatures for several cryo-soaking hours. This paper focuses on to study the effect of deep cryogenic treatment on Thermo mechanical properties of AISI H-13 tool steel. Deep cryogenic treatment at 32 hours of cryo-soaking time is applied and thermo mechanical performance of tool steel was analyzed by using pin on disk high temperature wear testing and stress rupture testings. The microstructural evolutions during DCT were evaluated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was observed that microstructural modifications like increase in carbide density, fine and uniform martensitic structure during DCT had significantly improved properties.

Determination of flavonoids,polyphenols and antioxidant activity of Tephrosia purpurea:a seasonal study

OBJECTIVE： Tephrosia purpurea （Linn.） Pers. is widely used in traditional medicine to treat liver disorders, febrile attacks, enlargement and obstruction of liver, spleen, and kidney. In the present study investigations were carried out to determine the seasonal impact on the content of flavonoid glycosides and on antioxidant activities so as to identify the optimal time of harvesting. METHODS： The plant materials were collected in different seasons during 2013-2014. Air-dried, powdered plant materials were extracted with 95% ethanol and ethanol：water （1：1 ） by ultrasound-assisted extraction process. Their chemical composition in terms of total polyphenol and flavonoid contents （TPCs and TFCs） was determined using modified colorimetric Folin-Ciocalteu method and aluminum chloride colorimetric assay respectively. To determine the in vitro antioxidant activity, diphenyl-picryl hydrazyl （DPPH） radical-scavenging assay and total antioxidant capacity by phosphomolybdate antioxidant assay were carried out. High-performance liquid chromatography （HPLC）/photo-diode array （PDA） analysis was used to quantify the flavonoid glycosides in the samples collected in different seasons. Correlation studies were also carried out between antioxidant activities and TPCs. RESULTS： The highest TPC and TFC were found to be in the 95% ethanolic extract of the August sample and the lowest in the 50% hydro-alcoholic extract of the plant sample collected in winter season. It was observed that in both the assays used to determine the antioxidant activity, the 95% ethanolic extracts in all the seasons showed a higher activity than their respective 50% hydro- alcoholic extracts with an increase in activity as we go from cold to hot to rainy seasons. Based on correlation analysis, DPPH radical-scavenging activities as well as the spectrophotometrically measured phosphomolybdenum complex were also strongly correlated with TPC of the extracts, The most abundant flavonoid glycoside was quercetin-3-O-

Tissue Engineered Osteogenesis in Bone Defects by Homologous Osteoblasts Loaded on Sterile Bioresorbable Coral Scaffold in Rabbits

Objectives: This study explores feasibility of tissue-engineered osteogenesis using sterile coral implants loaded with homologous osteoblasts to repair bone defects. Study Design: A unilateral 4 mm transverse dis- continuity defect was produced approximately mid-way along left radius of young female rabbits using ro- tary diamond disc under continuous saline irrigation and stabilised with autoclaved steel miniplate and screws. The defect was then fitted with sterile bioresorbable coral implant loaded with homologous neonatal calvarial osteoblasts or control implants without osteoblasts. All animals underwent radiography immedi- ately post-operative, at weekly intervals for four weeks and at fortnightly intervals thereafter. Operated bones were histologically evaluated for osteogenesis at 12 weeks. Results: Findings demonstrate osteogenesis and complete repair of bioresorbable coral implant by homologous osteoblasts loaded on coral scaffold. Conclu- sions: Single stage surgery using this technique to induce osteogenesis and closure of discontinuity bone de- fects including palatal clefts and peripheral reduction of large craniofacial defects might prove better thera- peutic modality than autologous bone grafting or tissue distraction osteogenesis.
