Despite the current threat from climate change,plastic collecting in the world's oceans,and the steady loss of biodiversity,the world continually fails to take action with regard to our rapidly changing ***,waiting on governments to act is no longer a viable *** change is needed and the pace of diplomacy is simply too *** governments are reactionary and taking action to solve future problems is not a priority,even as the threat of potential ecological catastrophe draws ever *** is in the hands of individuals,and it is our decisions and behaviors that will influence the future of our planet and our ability to inhabit ***,building momentum for sustainable behavior must begin with *** neoliberal approach to environmental protection posits that individuals are motivated by rational self-interest,and that economic incentives are necessary to achieve environmental ***,recent research suggests that monetary gain alone actually negatively impacts behavior,and often neglects the rural *** a result,models for projects designed to benefit the environment need more than just a monetary incentive,they must incorporate all three pillars of sustainability:environment,economy and *** approach for building momentum for sustainable behavior with regard to municipal solid waste management,particularly in the developing world,is by implementing Locally Managed Decentralized Circular Economy(LMDCE)*** contribution will describe the role behavioral economics plays in the choices made by producers and *** results of a case study on applying LMDCE principles in Uganda to manage waste plastic accumulation by conversion to fuel oil will be presented.

Population I Cepheids and understanding star formation history of the Small Magellanic Cloud

In this paper, we study the age and spatial distributions of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud （SMC） as a function of their ages using data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. A period - age relation derived for Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud （LMC） has been used to find the ages of Cepheids. The age distribution of the SMC Classical Cepheids is found to have a peak at log（Age）： 8.40 ± 0.10 which suggests that a major star formation event might have occurred in the SMC about 250 4- 50 Myr ago. It is believed that this star forming burst had been triggered by close interactions of the SMC with the LMC and/or the Milky Way. A comparison of the observed spatial distributions of the Cepheids and open star clusters has also been carried out to study the star formation scenario in the SMC.

Luminescence properties of Eu^(2+),Gd^(3+) and Pr^(3+) doped translucent Sialon phosphors

Optical properties of hot pressed Sialon ceramics doped with different rare earth oxides（REOs） i.e. Eu2O3, Gd2O3, and Pr2O3 were investigated. The α-Sialon phase was the main phase obtained after sintering as observed by X-ray diffraction（XRD）. The transparency of different samples of varying thickness measured from UV to IR region revealed that the samples were translucent in the visible region while transparent in IR region. The thin samples of 150 μm thickness had transmittance as high as 30% in the visible region. The luminescence was observed in transmittance mode to investigate the effect of sample thickness on luminescence intensity. We observed blue, yellow and red emissions in Sialon doped with Gd2O3, Eu2O3, and Pr2O3, respectively. The excitation wavelength for Gd2O3 and Pr2O3 doped samples were in UV region i.e. 280 and 270 nm, respectively, whereas, for Eu2O3 doped samples was in the blue region（460 nm）. The Eu2O3 doped Sialon having 300 μm thickness showed better white light extraction as coupled with blue LED. Moreover, the fabricated phosphor samples exhibited high hardness around 20 GPa and fracture toughness above 5 MPa·m1/2.

Integrated approach for understanding spatio-temporal changes in forest resource distribution in the central Himalaya

Intense anthropogenic exploitation has altered distribution of forest resources. This change was analyzed using visual interpretation of satellite data of 1979, 1999 and 2009. Field and interactive social surveys were conducted to identify spatial trends in forest degradation and data were mapped on forest cover and land use maps. Perceptions of villagers were compiled in a pictorial representation to understand changes in forest resource distribution in central Himalaya from 1970 to 2010. For- ested areas were subject to degradation and isolation due to loss of con- necting forest stands. Species like Lantana camara and Eupatorium adenophorum invaded forest landscapes. Intensity of human pressure differed by forest type and elevation. An integrated approach is needed to monitor forest resource distribution and disturbance.

Modelling effect of magnetic field on material removal in dry electrical discharge machining

One of the reasons for increased material removal rate in magnetic field assisted dry electrical discharge machining （EDM） is confinement of plasma due to Lorentz forces. This paper presents a mathematical model to evaluate the effect of external magnetic field on crater depth and diameter in single- and multiple-discharge EDM process. The model incorporates three main effects of the magnetic field, which include plasma confinement, mean free path reduction and pulsating magnetic field effects. Upon the application of an external magnetic field, Lorentz forces that are developed across the plasma column confine the plasma column. Also, the magnetic field reduces the mean free path of electrons due to an increase in the plasma pressure and cycloidal path taken by the electrons between the electrodes. As the mean free path of electrons reduces, more ionization occurs in plasma column and eventually an increase in the current density at the inter-electrode gap occurs. The model results for crater depth and its diameter in single discharge dry EDM process show an error of 9%-10% over the respective experimental values.

Standardizing and Centralizing Datasets for Efficient Training of Agricultural Deep Learning Models

In recent years,deep learning models have become the standard for agricultural computer *** models are typically fine-tuned to agricultural tasks using model weights that were originally fit to more general,non-agricultural *** lack of agriculture-specific fine-tuning potentially increases training time and resource use,and decreases model performance,leading to an overall decrease in data *** overcome this limitation,we collect a wide range of existing public datasets for 3 distinct tasks,standardize them,and construct standard training and evaluation pipelines,providing us with a set of benchmarks and pretrained *** then conduct a number of experiments using methods that are commonly used in deep learning tasks but unexplored in their domain-specific applications for *** experiments guide us in developing a number of approaches to improve data efficiency when training agricultural deep learning models,without large-scale modifications to existing *** results demonstrate that even slight training modifications,such as using agricultural pretrained model weights,or adopting specific spatial augmentations into data processing pipelines,can considerably boost model performance and result in shorter convergence time,saving training ***,we find that even models trained on low-quality annotations can produce comparable levels of performance to their high-quality equivalents,suggesting that datasets with poor annotations can still be used for training,expanding the pool of currently available *** methods are broadly applicable throughout agricultural deep learning and present high potential for substantial data efficiency improvements.

Recent Progress in Deciphering the Biosynthesis of Aspartate-Derived Amino Acids in Plants

Plants are either directly or indirectly the source of most of the essential amino acids in animal diets. Four of these essential amino acids--methionine, threonine, isoleucine, and lysine--are all produced from aspartate via a well studied biosynthesis pathway. Given the nutritional interest in essential amino acids, the aspartate-derived amino acid pathway has been the subject of extensive research. Additionally, several pathway enzymes serve as targets for econom- ically important herbicides, and some of the downstream products are biosynthetic precursors for other essential plant metabolites such as ethylene and S-adenosylmethionine. Recent and ongoing research on the aspartate-derived family of amino acids has identified new enzyme activities, regulatory mechanisms, and in vivo metabolic functions. Together, these discoveries will open up new possibilities for plant metabolic engineering.

Three-dimensional computational characterization of grain size and texture effects in magnesium alloys

This work systematically investigates the microstructure-property relationship in Mg alloys. Emphasis is placed on understanding, through high resolution crystal plasticity modeling, how grain size and texture collectively impact material strengthening and hardening, net plastic anisotropy, and tension-compression asymmetry. To achieve this, 528 fully three-dimensional finite element calculations are performed, which comprise eleven textures, four grain sizes, six loading orientations, and two uniaxial loading states(tension and compression). The grain size effect follows Hall-Petch relation that depends on both, loading orientation and initial texture. The reduction in extension twinning with grain size refinement is influenced by texture as well. Below a threshold textural strength, grain size refinement leads to an appreciable reduction in the net plastic anisotropy at yield, quantified using Hill anisotropy, and reduced tension-compression asymmetry. Using a micromechanical basis, the effect of grain size and texture on material ductility is predicted to be non-monotonic. The computational predictions serve as synthetic data sets for experimental validation and reduced-order modeling.

Disturbance Observer Based Speed Control of PMSM Using Fractional Order PI Controller

In this paper, fractional order PI(FOPI) control is developed for speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM). Designing the parameters for FOPI controller is a challenging task, especially for nonlinear systems like *** three PI controllers in the conventional vector controlled speed drive are replaced by FOPI controllers. Design of these FOPI controllers is based on the locally linearized model of PMSM around an operating point. This operating point changes with the load torque. The novelty of the work reported here is in use of Non Linear Disturbance Observer(NLDO) to estimate load torque to obtain this new operating point. All three FOPI controllers are then designed adaptively using this new operating point. The scheme is tested on simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK and results are presented.

Uganda has been implementing the Global Health Security Agenda(GHSA)since 2015 to build its capacity according to World Health Organization(WHO)Benchmarks on International Health Regulations *** country remains prone to outbreaks,with more than 20 disease outbreaks reported in the past five years,including Ebola virus disease,Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever,Marburg haemorrhagic fever,measles,yellow fever,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),and *** resistance(AMR)is an ongoing *** scored capacity level 3 on infection prevention and control(IPC)and antimicrobial stewardship(AMS)in the 2017 Joint External Evaluation(JEE)*** gaps were being addressed after a self-assessment in *** paper describes the technical assistance approaches provided to Uganda by the Medicines,Technologies,and Pharmaceutical Services Program,funded by the United States(U.S.)Agency for International development,and implemented by Management Sciences for *** program,through a One Health approach,supported systematic capacity strengthening based on the JEE's capacity advancement framework for global health security,specifically relating to *** program's interventions impacted 32 WHO benchmark actions(7 for AMR multisectoral coordination,16 for IPC,and 9 for AMS),contributing to Uganda's strengthened GHSA *** success built on the AMR platform,the program trained 745 health workers in IPC for the Ebola virus and provided support for simulation exercises by eight district IPC *** program also worked with the Ministry of Health to coordinate IPC for the COVID-19 response in five health regions,covering 45 districts and reaching 5,452 health workers at 858 health facilities.
