Morphological Diversity within <i>Pterocarpus erinaceus</i>Poir. (Fabaceae), an Overexploited Species in the Savannahs of Côte d’Ivoire

Pterocarpus erinaceus is a high socio-economic tree of African savannahs. It is overexploited due to technological qualities of its wood, forage value and medicinal uses. The main objective of this study is the assessment of the morphological variability within this species in Cote d’Ivoire, in sight of rational management. Fourteen morphological traits were used to appraise the variability within 144 trees in production from six sites (Yalo, Moyenne Marahoué, Kahanso, Kouassi-Ndawa, Ouarigué and Téguirdouo). The results indicate that the variability reaches 6.60 for the height of the fruit and 45.99 for the weight of the fruit. The results reveal also that there are three morphological groups of P. erinaceus in Cote d’Ivoire. Of the four traits that revealed a distinction among the three morphotypes, only the width of leaves and the number of leaflets enabled their complete distinction. Trees of group 1 have long leaves with a high number of leaflets and large fruits. Trees of group 2 have small leaves with a reduced number of leaflets and large fruits. Then trees of group 3 have intermediate value of width of leaves and number of leaflet and small fruits. The three morphological groups could be useful for varietal selection of P. erinaceus in Cote d’Ivoire.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Intestinal Metaplasia in Chronic Helicobacter pylori Gastritis in a Country with High Endemicity: Ivory Coast Case

Context/Objective: Few studies have been carried out in a country with high endemicity for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in Sub-Saharan Africa looking for the association of intestinal metaplasia (IM) with chronic gastritis. We hypothesize that IM is correlated with the intensity of H. pylori infection in a country with high endemicity, Ivory Coast. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal metaplasia in chronic H. pylori gastritis in Ivory Coast. Methods: This was a prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study, carried out over a period of 5 months, in the reference hospital centers of Abidjan, specialized in Gastroenterology. All patients who had undergone Gastroscopy with biopsies according to the criteria of the Sydney System for the anatomopathological study, those with chronic gastritis and/or H. pylori intestinal metaplasia on histology and in whom all the parameters of the Sydney system classification had been well informed. The quantitative variables were expressed by their means accompanied by their standard deviations and the qualitative variables by their numbers and percentages. Chi-square and Fischer tests were used to look for associations between variables. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: 152 patients were retained. The mean age was 44.9 ± 12.9 years. The prevalence of intestinal metaplasia was 11.8%. In univariate analysis, no significant association was found between clinical and pathological sociodemographic factors (age, sex, ethnicity, educational level, profession) and intestinal metaplasia in chronic Helicobacter pylori gastric cases. In multivariate analysis we found that prolonged use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and a history of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) were significantly associated with the absence of IM. Cassava is the second most important food crop produced and consumed in Côte d’Ivoire, after yam. White-fleshed varieties, which are low in total carotenoids, are widespread, while coloured-fleshed varieties (yellow to orange), carotenoid-rich, are rare. However, the consumption of carotenoid-rich cassava varieties could help to alleviate health problems related to vitamin A deficiency. This study aims to identify high agronomic performance, carotenoid-rich and versatile cassava varieties among 31 clones introduced from IITA. They were compared to three controls, Bocou2, Yacé and Bonou2, according to agronomic and technological parameters. Results found that out of the 31 clones, six (I082425, I084157, I084563, I085894, I083774 and I070520) were more productive than the control Bocou2 (46.01 ± 14.88 t·ha-1);the clone I083774 had the highest yield (55.88 ± 6.16 t·ha-1). Twenty-one clones had dry matter contents, ranging from 37% to 41%, significantly similar to Yacé control (42.70%). Thirteen clones had highest total carotenoid contents than the control Bocou2. Clones I084157 and I082425 recorded the highest total carotenoid contents with 17.57 ± 1.92 and 18.39 ± 1.19 μg·g-1 respectively. Overall 31 tested clones were fibrous to varying degrees while 27 clones had mild or neutral post-cooking flavours and 17 clones had poor cooking. The clone I084157 is the best compromise of agronomic and technological desired traits.

Since a longtime considered as functional and psychological, children’s abdominal pains (CAP) is a public health problem. Advances in digestive endoscopy and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) discovery have reignited the debate of the organicity of CAP. The aim of this study is to determine the diagnosis rentability of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) in CAP in Ivory Coast. Patients and Methods: This a retrospective analytical study based on reports of UGIE performed in 2 university hospital and 3 private clinics of Abidjan from march 2007 to march 2016. The children (from 1 day to 15 years) in which UGIE were performed for abdominal pains were included in the study. Results: 116 UGIE were performed in children for abdominal pains during the study period. Epigastric pain was the main indication of UGIE (88%). The diagnosis rentability of UGIE was more than 70% in this study. The main anomalies observed in UGIE were gastropathies. Ulcers were rarely found. Conclusion: UGIE play an important diagnosis role in CAP in Ivory Coast. However gastric biopsies for Helicobacter pylori research are not common practice in our country.

Factors Associated with Hepatic Steatosis in Black African Subjects with Chronic Viral Hepatitis B in Côte d’Ivoire

Context/Objectives: With the progression of the global epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome, the coexistence of hepatic steatosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis B (VHB) is becoming significant. The aim of this work was to determine the factors associated with hepatic steatosis assessed by a Fibroscan with Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) in patients with chronic viral hepatitis B in Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: This was a cross-sectional and analytical study. Data was collected from February 15 to July 31, 2020 in a private hospital structure in the city of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. We included 83 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B. These were black patients, having performed a Fibroscan/CAP during the recruitment period and consenting to participate in the study. Patients with significant alcohol consumption, a secondary cause of hepatic steatosis, or other liver disease regardless of the etiology associated with hepatitis B were not included. Results: The frequency of hepatic steatosis in chronic VHB carriers assessed by the CAP in our study population was 48.19% including 24.10% severe steatosis. Obesity and high LDL cholesterol were statistically correlated with the presence of steatosis in our patients. Patients who had steatosis on ultrasound were 5 times more likely to have steatosis on CAP. Significant fibrosis was not significantly associated with steatosis. Conclusion: Obesity and LDL hypercholesterolemia are the main factors associated with hepatic steatosis detected by Fibroscan/CAP in patients with chronic viral hepatitis B.

To determine the occurrence of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enerobateriaceae in commercial powdered infant formula (PIF), 185 packages of PIF from different manufacturers, supermarkets and drug-stores in Abidjan were analyzed. Ten g of sample was homogenized in 90 ml of buffered peptone water (PBW, Biorad, Paris) for further studies. Enterobacteriaceae (coliforms) were enumerated according to French Association of Standardization methods. E. sakazakii was detected according to Kandhai’s method. Bacteria were identified using API20 system. Thirty-eight samples (20.5%) were positive for Enterobacteriaceae. Twenty-four samples (13%) yielded Enterobacter sakazakii. Other Enterobacteriaceae isolated included Pantoea spp. 21 (11.5%), Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. Pneumonia 8 (4.3%), Citrobacter diversus 1 (0.5%), Citrobacter freundii 1 (0.5%), Enterobacter cloacae 1 (0.5%), Salmonella reading 1 (0.5%), Serratia ficara 1 (0.5%) Serratia odorifera 1 (0.5%). This study is the first report to describe the contamination of PIF from Abidjan with E. sakazakii and several other Enterobacteriaceae that could be opportunistic pathogens. Therefore, well-controlled studies need to be conducted to assess the extent of risk associated with contaminated PIF for infants in Abidjan.

Industrial effluents from textile, tannery or printing activities often have a significant pollutant load composed of dyes that are difficult to biodegrade. These dyes pose a threat to the environment. To overcome this problem, various processes have been developed to eliminate these dyes in wastewater before their release into nature. Conventional biological or physical processes most often prove to be ineffective and expensive. It is therefore necessary to resort to other processes such as advanced oxidation processes (POA). This work therefore focuses on the study of the influence of clay in the degradation of Methylene Blue by the photo-Fenton process which is one of the advanced oxidation processes (POA), with the source of irradiation, natural light. To do this, two clays from Côte d’Ivoire referenced AB and Aga were the subject of a physicochemical and mineralogical characterization. The results showed that Aga clay is composed of 75.43% quartz, 12.72% kaolinite, 8.75% illite and 3.12% goethite and AB clay consists of 61, 36% kaolinite, 28.6% quartz and 10.10% illite. Under natural light irradiation the optimal amounts of Fenton reagents (iron: 10 mg;H2O2: 0.1 mL) were determined. Finally, the addition of clay to the photo-Fenton process made it possible to improve the degradation of the pollutant (Methylene Blue). Indeed, the yield increased from 92% for the photo-Fenton process to 98.43% with the addition of AB clay and 98.13% for the addition of Aga clay. The results of the degradation kinetics clearly show that the degradation follows the pseudo-second order kinetics with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99.
