Stratification of the Degree of Hepatic Involvement in HIV-HCV Coinfection Using Two Biomarkers: APRI and FIB-4

Hepatitis C infection in people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) poses management challenges. Of the world’s population, 3% are estimated to have chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection, which is responsible for about 70% of cases of chronic hepatitis (accelerated chronicity in the presence of HIV and for such major complications as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The fibrosis 4 (FIB-4) and Aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index (APRI) scores are simple, inexpensive tests accessible to most people, and their performance has not yet been studied in C?te d’Ivoire. Objective: To prospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of APRI and FIB-4 scores in liver damage in those co-infected with HIV/HCV in C?te d’Ivoire. Methods: This study was conducted over three months. The patients came from national blood transfusion center of the cities of Man and Daloa. The criteria for selecting respondents were at least 18 years of age and a positive test for HIV and HCV. APRI and FIB-4 scores were calculated for each patient from biological data obtained by COBAS C311 (Roche Hitachi, Japan). Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad and MED-CALC software. Results: Our study involved 30 patients (men) of middle age (25 - 52 years), with extremes ranging from 0.67 to 8 for APRI and 0.201 to 22 for FIB-4. A predictive APRI and FIB4 score of significant hepatic fibrosis was observed in 23% of patients;however, 46% and 54% of patients for the APRI and FIB-4 score, respectively, would not have significant fibrosis. An APRI and FIB4 score not included in the classification limits of the type of fibrosis hepatitis was observed in 31% and 23% of patients, respectively. Conclusion: The performance of the APRI and FIB-4 biological scores analyzed according to the interpretation of their cut-off values would enable classifying about 70% and 77%, respectively, of the patient population in the stages of hepatitis C fibrosis.

Influence of the Granular Class of Crushed Granites on the Litho-Stabilization of Samo Laterites (South-East of Côte d’Ivoire)

Most of the laterites found in Ivory Coast do not meet the technical conditions to be used in their natural state for the design of road foundations. Also, to meet the growing needs for road materials, various amendments are made to them, including litho-stabilization. Thus, this study proposes to understand the influence of the granular class of natural aggregates on the performance of laterites. To achieve this objective, different proportions of crushed granites of class 0/5, 0/15 and 5/15 have been incorporated into the soils of southern Côte d’Ivoire, especially in Samo. This modified soil has been subjected to mechanical tests such as the modified Proctor and CBR test. The results obtained show that the dry densities of the incorporated laterites containing crushed granites increase with the content of natural aggregates and decrease with the increase in the water content. Likewise, the CBR bearing indices at 95% of the Modified Optimum Proctor of the different compositions (laterites + crushed granites) increase with the proportion of aggregates. The addition of coarse aggregates to the laterites therefore promotes the establishment of a framework which improves its bearing capacity. From 20% to 30% crushed granites respectively of class 0/15;0/5 and 5/15, the values of the CBR obtained are greater than those of 30% therefore these modified soils can be used as a foundation layer for traffic of T1, T2 and T3 type. Likewise, the laterites’ mixtures with at least 40% crushed granites of class 0/15 and 0/5 can also be used for the foundation and base layers.

Assessment of Meteorological Drought in Climate Variability Context within the Comoe River Transboundary Watershed

In the context of climate variability resulting in a decrease in rainfall with a severe drought, a spatio-temporal study of this phenomenon remains imperative for the efficient management of water resources. This paper aims to assess the long-term rainfall drought trend and breakpoints within the Comoe River watershed. From monthly rainfall data series (1960-2000), Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) values were calculated for a time scale of 3 months (SPI.3). Statistical tests for breaks (CUSUM, and t-Student) and trends (Man-Kendall and Linear Regression) as well as the Sen’ slope method for estimating the magnitude of trends was applied. The breaks dates observed are mostly located after the 1970s. Based on SPI.3 values below the threshold of 0.84 chosen as an indicator of drought, rarely has more than half of the catchment area been affected by drought. The average watershed affected is about 20% over the study period (1960-2000). The most representative years, in terms of spatial expansion of the drought, in decreasing order of importance are: 1983, 1992, 1972 and 1982. The years 1982 and 1983 stand out for their exceptional condition, as the drought-affected 50% to 90% of the total catchment area. SPI.3 series from 1960 to the various break dates recorded slopes between -0.01 and 0.00 with a slight drought trend for most of the catchment. After the break periods, almost the entire northern part of the basin is characterized by slight moisture with Sen’s slopes between 0.000 and 0.005. The southern part will remain slightly subject to normal rainfall conditions.

Green coal or bio-coal is coal produced with rich biodegradable materials, elaborated from agricultural and household residues with a high percentage of carbon. This green charcoal (fuel briquettes) is an alternative to charcoal. Well known for its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, charcoal is one of the causes of tree felling. The valorization of waste by the manufacture of biofuels could be an alternative to the use of charcoal. The general objective of the present study is the valorization of nine biomasses from Togo as raw materials. Specifically, physico-chemical characteristics such as dehydration, acidity, and conductivity were determined. Information on the structure and composition of the biomass was found. These data on the nature of the biomass were found through the use of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Thermogravimetry (TGA). The promising results inform on the nature of the analyzed samples and allow the selection of the best biomass which would give an important thermal conductivity for the manufacture of the briquettes, but also of the binders to be used according to the physico-chemical characteristics like the pH.

Phytochemical Constituents of the Stem Barks of Uvaria tortilis, an Endemic Annonaceae from Côte d’Ivoire

Uvaria tortilis is a lianescent annonaceous species endemic to the Côte d’Ivoire where it is used to treat amenorrhea and as uterotonic. Thus, the MeOH crude extract of its stem barks was investigated in order to determine the chemical composition. A new C-benzyl hydroxlated, uvriatortilisin (1), together with six known compounds, dichamanetin (2), β-sitosterol (3), stigmasterol (4), chamanetin (5), uvaretin (6) and (-)-epicatechin (7), were isolated. Structure of these compounds was elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, including IR, UV, MS and NMR (1D and 2D). Certain compounds could be considered to have chemotaxonomic value.

The analysis of data from the National Observation Network (RNO) of the water quality of the Ivorian Anti-Pollution Center (CIAPOL) relating to the physico-chemical quality and the trophic state of the lagoon bays of Côte d’Ivoire has allowed apprehending the degree of pollution of the bays of Biétry. This bay is heavily polluted, overall, there is a high salinity at depth between 22.5‰ and 27.5‰, a slightly basic character with a pH oscillating between 7.8 and 8.1 for surface waters and between 7, 6 and 7.8 for bottom waters. This is a very marked surface oxygenation between 100.94% and 114.72%;a slightly elevated temperature oscillating between 28.6°C and 29°C for surface waters and between 26.6°C and 27.1°C for bottom waters. This is high turbidity due to suspended solids and high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations as well. As a result, these waters evolve towards a “mesotrophic” character according to the OECD (1982) and they are “eutrophic” according to Carlson (1977). This water is therefore impure according to the WHO concerning water intended for bathing activities.

Hydrochemical Characterization of Groundwater in the Sub-Prefecture of Kokumbo (Ivory Coast)

In the Kokumbo sub-prefecture, groundwater extraction related to gold panning remains a major concern, not to mention the deterioration of its quality. Among the work carried out on water resources, no scientific interest has been shown in groundwater to characterise it. The objective of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of its physico-chemical quality. In situ measurements and physico-chemical analyses using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) were carried out on five (5) human-powered pump (HPP) water samples and six (6) well water samples collected during low and high water seasons. The results show that the physico-chemical quality of the water, which is sometimes turbid, is satisfactory in terms of the mineralization of the borehole and well water, and the pH of the boreholes, while the temperatures of the two waters and the pH of the wells do not comply with WHO standards. The levels of major ions are recommended for consumption. The waters are classified as predominantly bicarbonate-calcium and magnesium (73%) in the dry season and in the flood season, with an equal split between bicarbonate-calcium and magnesium (45.5%) and chloride-calcium and magnesium (45.5%). The elimination of materials responsible for the turbidity of certain waters by managers or populations is essential for drinking water use. The risk linked to this element means that these turbid waters are not recommended for drinking water.

Evaluation of the Geological and Metallogenic Potential of Koffissiokaha Permit, Area of Katiola, Côte d’Ivoire

The semi-industrial permit of Koffissiokaha, south-eastern area of Katiola, is located in the northern part of Fêtêkro Birimian Greenstone Belt (Côte d’Ivoire). This permit, applicated by the company Blue-Hill Exploration Sarl (BHEX), is in the southern continuity area of Lafigué permit (Endeavour Mining). Blue-Hill will have to work to highlight potential gold mineralization, quantify it (resource calculation) and initiate administrative procedures to obtain a Semi-Industrial Exploitation Authorization (AESI). Our recent works, including field mapping coupled with petrographic and microstructural studies, are therefore intended to contribute to the knowledge of the geology and to the evaluation of the gold potential of this permit. They suggest that Koffissiokaha permit includes four major lithologic units: 1) a sedimentary unit formed by metaarenites and metasiltites, 2) a unit of mafic pyroclastites (cinerites, tuffs and volcanic breccias) 3) a plutonic unit of metagabbro and finally, 4) a lode-type unit made up of metarhyodacites. The metamorphism that affected the volcano-sedimentary rocks is of low grade to greenschist facies. On the structural level, deformations with variable gradients are noted. The major planary structure, the schistosity, is oriented N20 - 40 with weak (°), moderate (50°- 60°) and steep dips (>70°) or subvertical. The faults generally correspond to narrow dextral or senestral shear-zones (75°) towards south-east or subvertical. They are most often intersected by late strike-slip faults-oriented NW-SE, NNW-SSE and N-S. Quartz veins are associated with faults or deformation zones. They are generally oriented N20 to N40, with weak (°), moderate (55°- 65°) and steep dips (>75°). Orientations of joints and fractures are mostly subparallel to the plans of schistosity, shears and most of quartz veins. However, ENE, WNW and N-S fractures are also distinguished. The objective of this work was to determine the suitability of poultry methacompost from the 2nd methanizer of the BRIN FOUNDATION in Yaokokoroko (Bondoukou, Côte d’Ivoire), to be used in the improvement of soil fertility. The methacompost studied has a C/N ratio = 17.26, which could characterize a stable methacompost with high amending power. It also contains mineral elements Nitrogen (N) = 0.68% DM;Phosphorus (P) = 0.084% DM;Potassium (K) = 0.67% DM;Calcium (Ca) = 0.65% DM;Magnesium (Mg) = 0.15% DM. red in the standard relating to the organic amendments (NFU 44-051). The methacompost has fertilizing and amending properties and could not present any risk for vegetation and soils.

Biotolerance Study of the Hydroalcoholic Extract of Terminalia mantaly H. Perrier on Rat Renal Activity

Terminalia mantaly H. Perrier is one of the plants of the Combretaceae family that is widely used in traditional African medicine for its antibacterial, antifungal, and especially in the treatment of malaria. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Terminalia mantaly (HAETM) on the tissue and kidney biochemical markers of rats. Forty (40) rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, assigning 10 animals within each group (5 males and 5 females per group). Animals in group 1 received distilled water and were used as the control group;on the other hand, groups 2, 3, 4 received by gavage a volume of the extract corresponding to 1 ml/100g body weight at 150 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, respectively. The hydroalcoholic extract was administered at the same time daily for 28 days, and blood was collected once a week to evaluate renal biochemical parameters;the kidney tissues were used to perform the histopathological study. The creatinine rate increased significantly (p Terminalia mantaly should be globally well tolerated by the body when used in doses ranging from 150 to 600 mg/kg of the body weight in animals (for this study, rats). However, further in-depth studies would be needed to get a more thorough and complete picture of the safety profile of the extract.
