A body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 is associated with a poor prognosis in patients with acute pancreatitis: a study of Japanese patients

BACKGROUND:In Asian population, there is limited infor mation on the relevance between obesity and poor outcomes in acute pancreatitis(AP). The objective of this study was to examine the clinical impact of obesity based on body mass index(BMI) on prognosis of AP in Japanese ***:A total of 116 patients with AP were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine relations between BMI and patients’ outcomes. Additionally, to investigate whether including obesity as a prognostic factor improved the predic tive accuracy of a Japanese prognostic factor score(PF score)a receiver-operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis of mortality was ***:Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that BMI ≥25 kg/m2was associated with a significant higher mor tality [odds ratio(OR)=15.8; 95% confidence interval(CI):1.1-227; P=0.043]. The area under the ROC curve(AUC) for the combination of PF score and BMI ≥25 kg/m2(AUC=0.881;95% CI:0.809-0.952) was higher than that for the PF score alone(AUC=0.820; 95% CI:0.713-0.927)(P=0.034).CONCLUSIONS:The negative impact of a high BMI on the prognosis of AP was confirmed in a Japanese population Including BMI ≥25 kg/m2 as an additional parameter to PF score enhanced the predictive value of the PF score for AP-related mortality.

Quantitative Visualization of Two-Phase Acoustic Streaming Emitted from Ultrasonic Scaler

This study experimentally investigated two-phase acoustic streaming and droplet properties of aerosols, which were generated by a dental ultrasonic scaler. The velocity field of acoustic streaming was measured using particle image velocimetry with the generated liquid droplets as tracers, and the shadowgraph technique was adopted to measure the droplet diameter. In the PIV measurement of the gas-liquid two-phase flow, the injection of oil smoke substantially suppressed the number of invalid vectors. The acoustic streaming of the ultrasonic scaler showed maximum velocity at a region away from the scaler tip, and the maximum velocity increased with an increase in the liquid flow rate. The droplets of the ultrasonic scaler were generated by capillary waves and had a diameter on the order of tens of micrometers. These droplets effectively enhanced the velocity of the acoustic streaming in the two-phase case compared to the single-phase case without the droplets.

Experimental study on dynamic pipe fracture in consideration of hydropower plant model

In the case of sudden valve closure, water hammer creates the most powerful pressure and damage to pipeline systems. The best way to protect the pipeline system is to eliminate water hammer. The main reasons for water hammer occurrence are valve closure, high initial velocity, and static pressure. However, it is difficult to eliminate water hammer. Water hammer tends to occur when the valve is being closed. In this study, the pipe fracture caused by static water pressure, gradually increasing pressure, and suddenly increasing pressure were compared experimentally in a breaking PVC test pipe. The quasi-static zone, the dynamic zone, and the transition zone are defined through the results of those experiments, with consideration of the fracture patterns of test pipes and impulses. The maximum pressure results were used to design the pipeline even though it is in the dynamic zone.

Enabling Solution Growth of Insoluble Organic Materials in Common Solvents

Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) amorphous film was successfully deposited on a silicone substrate by physical vapor deposition. When the film was in contact with a common solvent such as aniline, 1-propanol and toluene, the CuPc solid film was partially dissolved followed by nucleation and crystal growth in the solution. Based on these experimental results, we propose a novel method for preparation of the organic thin film by combination of dry and wet processes.

The Japanese interplanetary probe Hayabusa2 was launched on December 3,2014 and the probe arrived at the vicinity of asteroid 162173 Ryugu on June 27,*** its 1.4 years of asteroid proximity phase,the probe successfully accomplished numbers of record-breaking achievements including two touchdowns and one artificial cratering experiment,which are highly expected to have secured surface and subsurface samples from the asteroid inside its sample container for the first time in *** Hayabusa2 spacecraft was designed not to orbit but to hover above the asteroid along the sub Earth *** orbital and geometrical configuration allows the spacecraft to utilize its high-gain antennas for telecommunication with the ground station on Earth while pointing its scientific observation and navigation sensors at the *** paper focuses on the regular station-keeping operation of Hayabusa2,which is called“home position”(HP)-keeping ***,together with the spacecraft design,an operation scheme called HP navigation(HPNAV),which includes a daily trajectory control and scientific observations as regular activities,is *** the description on the guidance,navigation,and control design as well as the framework of optical and radiometric navigation,the results of the HP-keeping operation including trajectory estimation and delta-V planning during the entire asteroid proximity phase are summarized and evaluated as a first ***,this paper states that the *** operation in the framework of HPNAV had succeeded without critical incidents,and the number of trajectory control delta-V was planned fficiently throughout the period.
