Co-Occurring Plant Species of the West African Critically Endangered Aubregrinia taïensis Heine, in Côte d’Ivoire

The Upper Guinea Forest is subject to heavy deforestation. In this context, many endemic and/or rare plant species are threatened with extinction. This is the case of Aubregrinia taïensis (Aubrév. & Pellegr.) Heine, a critically endangered sapotaceae species, endemic to Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. After 3 years of investigation in and around the Tai National Park (TNP) in the West of Côte d’Ivoire, only one individual of this species was located and no sexual reproductive organs (fruits, seeds) were observed. Woody plant species around this individual were inventoried in order to know the species that can co-occur with Aubregrinia taïensis. For that a plot of 30 m of diameter was established around the individual and all of the woody species of this circle were inventoried. Then, the taxonomic diversity, the chorology of the species, the conservation status and their life-form were recorded. A total of 130 woody plant species belonging to 51 families were collected in the site. The most represented families are Euphorbiaceae (12 spp.), Rubiaceae (10 spp.), Annonaceae (7 spp.), fabaceae, Moraceae, Malvaceae (6 spp. each) while the most represented genera are Diospyros L. (4 spp.), Cola Schott & Endl. and Vitex L. (3 spp.). Species from the Guineo-Congolese Region (GC) are the most abundant (72%). They are followed by West African endemic species (GCW, 19%). Microphanerophytes (mp) are the most abundant and represent more than 40% of the species. Three vulnerable species were found in this plot: Campylospermum amplectens, Placodiscus boya and Trichoscypha cavalliensis. Thus, the preservation of this forest is more than necessary.

Optimal biliary drainage for inoperable Klatskin's tumor based on Bismuth type

AIM： To investigate differences in the effects of biliary drainage procedures in patients with inoperable Klatskin＇s tumor based on Bismuth type, considering endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage （ERBD）, external percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage （EPTBD） and internal biliary stenting via the PTBD tract （IPTBD）. METHODS： The initial success rate, cumulative patency rate, and complication rate were compared retrospectively, according to the Bismuth type and ERBD, EPTBD, and IPTBD. Patency was defined as the duration for adequate initial bile drainage or to the point of the patient＇s death associated with inadequate drainage. RESULTS： One hundred thirty-four patients （93 men, 41 women; 21 Bismuth type Ⅱ, 47Ⅲ, 66 Ⅳ; 34 ERBD, 66 EPTBD, 34 IPTBD） were recruited. There were no differences in demographics among the groups. Adequate initial relief of jaundice was achieved in 91% of patients without a significant difference in the results among different procedures or Bismuth types. The cumulative patency rates for ERBD and IPTBD were better than those for EPTBD with Bismuth type Ⅲ. IPTBD provided an excellent response for Bismuth type IV. However, there was no difference in the patency rate among drainage procedures for Bismuth type Ⅱ. Procedure-related cholangitis occurred less frequently with EPTBD than with ERBD and IPTBD. CONCLUSION： ERBD is recommended as the firstline drainage procedure for the palliation of jaundice in patients with inoperable Klatskin＇s tumor of Bismuth type Ⅱ or Ⅲ, but IPTBD is the best option for Bismuth type Ⅳ.

Fungal Flora on Weeds in the Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) Orchard in Côte d’Ivoire

Since 2015, Côte d’Ivoire has been the world’s largest cashew producer. However, cashew orchards in Côte d’Ivoire are infected by fungal diseases that weaken production. And the contribution of weeds to the spread of these diseases is not yet understood. This study was initiated with the aim of establishing the role of weeds in the proliferation of pathogenic fungi in orchards. It consisted of a survey of weeds showing disease symptoms in cashew orchards in Côte d’Ivoire from February 2021 to July 2022. The itinerant method was used for the weed inventory. Symptomatic leaves were collected and sent to the laboratory for diagnosis on PDA (Potatoes Dextrose Agar) medium. In total, 50 species in 46 genera and 23 families were recorded. Laboratory diagnosis of the samples showed that 80% of the weeds identified harboured pathogenic fungi. The highest infection rates were obtained on Danielia oliveri R. (99.33% to 100%), Vitellaria paradoxa G. (100%), Pterocarpus erinaceus P. (83.91% to 99.33%), Micuna pruriens L. (98.33% to 100%) and Isoberlinia doka C. et S. (56.33% to 100%). The diagnosis revealed the presence of Lasiodiplodia sp, Colletotrichum sp, Pestalotia sp, Alternaria sp and Curvularia sp on weeds in the cashew orchard in Côte d’Ivoire.

Right Testicle Ectopy Associated with Left Renal Agenesis

Testicular ectopia is a rare genital malformation belonging to the spectrum of testicular migration abnormalities. Renal agenesis can be unilateral or bilateral, isolated or associated with other malformations (1/4 of renal agenesis is accompanied by genital malformations, and more often affects the left kidney. Few cases are reported in the literature. We report a case in a 28-year-old patient with ectopia of the right testicle in the suprapubic position associated with agenesis of the left kidney, and surgical management consisted of an orchiectomy, with good surgical results.

Spatial Availability of Nitrogen and Pesticides in the Surface Layers of Agricultural Soils of Tropical Hydrosystems in the Wet Season: Case of the BéréWatershed in Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa)

The objective of this study was to assess the contribution of the spatial organization of cropping systems and the physicochemical properties of surface layers of the agricultural zones soils in tropical hydrosystems to the spatial availability of nitrogen and pesticides during the wet season, such as the Béré watershed (BW) in C?te d’Ivoire. For this purpose, after mapping the spatial distribution of the BW cropping systems based on the likelihood classification methodology of satellite images of the study area, 27 samples from the 0 - 20 cm horizon of the soil surface layers of the agricultural areas were taken during the wet and agricultural season of the year 2016. The Kjeldahl method has been used to evaluate the total nitrogen concentration and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) chain made it possible for the analysis of pesticide residues in the soil solutions. Geostatistical analysis and processing of spatial data and physicochemical and agrochemical soil parameters revealed that two major agricultural areas stand out in the BW, namely the Béré upstream watershed (BUW) dominated at 32.65% by annual croppings (maize, cotton, rainfed or lowland rice, market gardening, etc.) and the Béré downstream watershed (BDW) by large areas of perennial croppings (cashew nuts, cocoa, etc.), i.e. 21.47%. Agricultural soils in BW are usually of the moderately desaturated ferralitic type with a low acid pH and a quite strong temperature, such as those of tropical soils’ characteristics. However, agricultural soils in the BUW are characterized by higher proportions of sand and coarse sand. The parameters such as total porosity, cation exchange capacity, clay, organic matter, silt, fine silt, coarse silt, and potassium ions, are higher in the soils of the agricultural area of the BDW. Helicobacter pylori Infection and Gastroduodenal Lesions: Prevalence and Associated factors in Cote d’Ivoire

Objective: The objective is to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and highlight the determinants of the infection as well as the gastric histopathological lesions associated with this infection. Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out from August 01, 2015 to December 31, 2020 in Bouaké. It included all patients with gastric and/or duodenal lesion on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in whom gastric biopsies and histopathology results are available. Results: The study involved 510 patients (301 men and 209 women). The prevalence of Hp was 66.47% (339/510 patients). The presence of Hp was not significantly related to age and gender. Epigastralgia was the most common indication with no significant difference between the positive and negative Hp groups (65.37% vs 34.63%, p = 0.35). A significant difference was only observed for duodenal ulcers (84.31% Hp+ vs 15.69% Hp-, p = 0.004). Regarding histological lesions: Chronic and active gastritis was strongly related to the presence of Hp (p < 0.05). Intestinal metaplasia and gastric atrophy were not significantly associated with the presence of Hp. These precursor lesions of gastric cancer (metaplasia and atrophy) were, however, significantly related to chronic gastric disease with p = 0.02 and p Conclusion: The prevalence of Hp is high in Bouaké. Our study confirms the link between Hp infection and chronic and active gastritis.

Study of Malaria in Patients Operated on at the Reference Health Center of Commune I Bamako

Malaria is a febrile and hemolyzing erythrocytopathy due to the development and multiplication of one or more of the five plasmodial species dependent on humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, P. vivax and P. knowlesi. These parasites are inoculated into humans by the infective bite of a female mosquito, female anopheles of the genus Anopheles, during a blood meal. The study aimed to: determine the frequency of fever due to malaria after surgery;describe malaria symptomatology and clinical evolution after surgical intervention;determine the average length of hospital stay for operated patients with malaria;evaluate the average cost of malaria treatment. This was a prospective study which involved 110 operated patients, which took place over a period of 12 months from March 2017 to February 2018 in the general surgery department at the Reference Health Center of commune I of the Bamako district. The frequency of malaria was 11.82% before the intervention and 3.64% after the intervention, with an average age of 29.80 years;extremes of 2 years and 76 years and a sex ratio of 1.5 in favor of the male sex. The main clinical signs were fever (38.18%), headache (20.91%) and vomiting (36.36%) and physical asthenia (18.18%). Diagnosed and treated early, malaria progressed favorably. The outcome was simple for all our patients and we did not record any deaths. The cost of treatment was borne by the patients and/or their families. The average cost of treatment was 7915 Cfa francs, significantly below the Malian minimum wage which is around 30,000 FCfa. The implementation of preventive measures is necessary to reduce the importance of malaria in hospitals: staff awareness, indoor spraying, use of impregnated mosquito nets.

Appropriateness of colonoscopy in Cocody teaching hospital center in 2010: A prospective study using criteria established by the European panel on the appropriateness of gastrointestinal endoscopy (EPAGE)

Aims: 1) To assess the feasibility of EPAGE criteria in clinical practice;2) To assess appropriateness colonoscopy using EPAGE criteria;3) To compare colonoscopy appropriateness and endoscopic lesions. Method: Hundred thirtynine consecutive patients explored by colonoscopy were included. The appropriateness of colonoscopy was evaluated by EPAGE criteria. Results: EPAGE criteria were applicable among 127 patients (91% of the cases). Colonoscopies were appropriate, uncertain and inappropriate in respectively 40%;27% and 24% of the cases. Rate of abnormal colonoscopies was significantly different between the 3 groups (p = 0.03). Cancers were diagnosed exclusively in the groups with appropriate and uncertain colonoscopies (11% and 5%). Colonic adenomas were observed in the three groups (appropriate (7%), uncertain (5%) and inappropriate (6%)). Subjects with uncertain indication were older (58.25 years;p = 0.035). Conclusion: EPAGE criteria are feasible in clinical practice in Cocody’s teaching hospital center. Colonoscopies are generally appropriate in our hospital. However, within sight of the significant number of normal colonoscopies and discovered lesions in uncertain indication, colonoscopy cannot concern exclusively calculation of a score of appropriateness.

Malware Detection Using Deep Learning

Malware represents a real threat to information systems, because of the damage it causes. This threat is growing today, as these programs take on more complex forms. This means they escape traditional malware detection methods. Hence the need for artificial intelligence, more specifically Deep Learning, which could detect malware more effectively. In this article, we’ve proposed a model for malware detection using artificial neural networks. Our approach used data from the characteristics of machines, particularly computers, to train our Deep Learning algorithm. This model demonstrated an accuracy of around 83% in predicting the presence of malware on a machine. Thus, the use of artificial neural networks for malware detection has shown his ability to assimilate complex, non-linear patterns from data.

Effect of Herbicides Used in Horticulture (2,4-D, Glyphosate and Nicosulfuron) on Snails <i>Achatina fulica</i>(Bowdich, 1720)

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic (2,4-D), glyphosate, and nicosulfuron, because of their modes of action and selectivity, are the most widely used herbicides in Ivorian horticulture. Fuels toxicity was the reason of many debates in the world because of their massive and uncontrolled use. They are frequently blamed for the reduction of soil fertility and terrestrial biodiversity observed in agricultural areas. In view of the debates raised by their toxicities, the use of these herbicides requires the greatest caution and clear information on the real risk incurred by the edaphic fauna by conducting ecotoxicity studies. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of 2,4-D, glyphosate and nicosulfuron herbicides on the growth and reproduction of Achatina fulica snails in microcosm. To do this, we treated each plot on which snail microcosms were placed with 2,4-D, glyphosate or nicosulfuron herbicides according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The results showed for all the herbicides used, that after 28 days of exposure, the growth of juvenile snails was slowed down. The number of eggs laid per pair was reduced in adult snails. The egg hatchability test revealed a reduction in egg hatchability. In addition, each effect was dependent on the herbicide used. Thus, toxicity was found to be greater according to the following order: nicosulfuron ? glyphosate ? 2,4-D. From the results obtained, we concluded that 2,4-D, glyphosate, and nicosulfuron treatments under field conditions are a potential threat to the sustainability of snail species and therefore to soil life. The intensity of the effect depends on the toxicity of the herbicides used.
