Tentative New Terminology: Initial Comedonal Phase Preceding Acute Inflammatory Phase of Acne Vulgaris—Importance of Early Treatment

We report a case of a 12-year-old female with closed and open comedo without inflammatory lesions at the first visit. She had been treated with topical adapalene once daily, and closed and open comedo subsided without inflammatory lesions one month after the treatment without any side effects induced by adapalen. The recurrence of comedo had not been observed afterwards. In the Japanese Dermatological Association (JDA) guidelines for the treatment of acne vulgaris, comedonal phase has not been stated. Then we propose the tentative new terminology of a comedonal phase and emphasize its importance in the early initial treatment for comedo to prevent the development of the acute inflammatory phase such as red papules and pustules and formation of acne scars.

Landscape process and pattern are closely related, hence recognition of landscape pattern is very important to recognize landscape process, and vice versa. Two new methods have been introduced: variable clumping method (VCM) and variable core area method (VCAM) which may be used to analyze spatial structure of landscape. VCM is used to quantify patch distribution while VCAM is for quantifying patch shape. To evaluate these methods, two different landscapes in southwestern Japan were applied. Saijo is selected as agricultural landscape and Hiwa is selected for region of mountainous rural landscape. By applying the two methods, several landscape elements showed that spatial structures depend on spatial scales. It can be concluded that the two tested methods are effective in understanding the characteristics of landscape structure which are difficult to detect by traditional analytic methods.

通过土壤温度预报校正(TDEC)法验证了地表下5 mm处测量土壤热通量的准确性,并以此代表地表热通量.总结了上海地区3种典型日(晴天、多云、雨天)地表下5 mm处土壤热通量的日变化情况,并通过控制变量法综合分析不同因素(太阳辐射量、土壤含水量、云量等)对土壤热通量的影响.结果表明:土壤热通量的波动晴天时最剧烈,波动范围为-23.62~111.81 W/m^2;随着土壤深度的递减,土壤热通量在多云和雨天的波动范围依次减小;未下雨时太阳辐射量与土壤热通量之间的相关性较强(R^2>0.74);土壤热通量的波动范围随土壤含水量的增加而缩小;在不同典型日,土壤热通量受到不同因素的影响.

The purpose of this research was to elucidate the relationship between tonsillar hypertrophy and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in terms of cephalometric analysis, as well as to determine factors that affect OSAS severity. 25 patients were enrolled in this study. Lateral cephalograms of the subjects were taken. Disease severity was evaluated by the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI). Cephalometric measurements (angle between line S-N and line N-A (SNA), angle between line S-N and line N-B (SNB), distance between the Mandibular Plane and the Hyoid (MPH), posterior airway space, the width of the airway behind the base of tongue along the B-Go line (PAS), upper airway space, the distance parallel to long axis of the airway, between a horizontal plane tangent to the superior aspect of the hyoid and a horizontal plane tangent to the posterior palate (UAL), multiplication of PAS and UAL (PAS × UAL)) were analyzed and compared between the groups with and without tonsillar hypertrophy. PAS and PAS × UAL were lower in the no hypertrophy group. SNB was significantly lower in the severe apnea group than mild to moderate group in no hypertrophy group (p = 0.035). In conclusion, patients with tonsillar hypertrophy had severe obstruction, but they had a relatively larger pharyngeal space on cephalometric analysis. After exclusion of the tonsillar hypertrophy group, cephalometric analysis could be more effective for analyzing OSAS severity.

This paper presents small-signal study based on eigenvalue analysis as a preliminary study to observe the interaction between multimass turbine-generator system and inverter-based distributed generation in a microgrid. The multimass turbine model is included in the overall distributed generation system model. Two case studies are demonstrated to observe the interaction between turbine-generator set and power electronics-based distributed generation system. Both case studies are in stand-alone and grid-connected operation. It can be shown that under stand-alone operation, unstable oscillatory modes may occur and be highly influenced by the operating points of the system.
