A child with severe inner ear malformations with favorable hearing utilization and balance functions after wearing hearing aids

Infants with congenital deafness caused by severe bilateral inner ear malformations frequently suffer from severe hearing loss and poor balance. Unfortunately, the use of hearing aids is usually ineffective in recovering hearing, necessitating cochlear implants. We report a case of a 6-year-old boy with congenital deafness and bilateral inner ear malformations(right side, incomplete partition type I [IP-I]; left side, common cavity deformity). Hearing aids had a remarkable effect in this patient, enabling sufficient and favorable hearing recovery such as to allow the patient to engage in daily conversations. Per-rotatory nystagmus was recorded on an electronystagmogram for both right and left rotations in a damped rotational chair test. It is rare for deaf children with severe bilateral inner ear malformation to demonstrate favorable development in hearing and good equilibrium function. Our findings suggest that auditoryevestibular hair cells in this patient may have been partially preserved despite IP-I in the right ear and common cavity deformity of the left ear.

Since the anti-inflammatory effect of hydrogen has been widely known,it was supposed that hydrogen could suppress tissue damage by inhibiting virus-related inflammatory ***,hydrogen is slightly soluble in water,which leads to poor effect of oral hydrogen-rich water *** this study,the nano-bubble hydrogen water(nano-HW)(about 0.7 ppm)was prepared and its therapeutic effect against viral infection was investigated by utilizing spring viraemia of carp virus(SVCV)-infected zebrafish as ***-month-old zebrafish were divided into nano-HW treatment-treated group and aquaculture water treated group(control group).The results revealed that the cumulative mortality rate of SVCV-infected zebrafish was reduced by 40%after treatment with nano-bubble hydrogen water,and q RT-PCR results showed that SVCV replication was significantly *** examination staining showed that SVCV infection caused tissue damage was greatly alleviated after treatment with nano-bubble hydrogen ***,SVCV infection caused reactive oxygen species(ROS)accumulation was significantly reduced upon nano-HW *** level of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β,IL-8,and TNF-αwas remarkably reduced in the nano-HW-treated group in vivo and in *** together,our data demonstrated for the first time that nano-HW could inhibit the inflammatory response caused by viral infection in zebrafish,which suggests that nano-HW can be applied to antiviral research,and provides a novel therapeutic strategy for virus-caused inflammation related disease.

AIM： To assess the validity of our selection criteria for hepatectomy procedures based on indocyanine green disappearance rate （KICG）, and to unveil the factors affecting posthepatectomy mortality in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. METHODS： A retrospective analysis of 198 consecutive patients with HCC who underwent partial hepatectomies in the past 14 years was conducted. The selection criteria for hepatectomy procedures during the study period were KICG≥0.12 for hemihepatectomy, KICG≥0.10 for bisegmentectomy, KCG≥0.08 for monosegmentectomy, and KICG≥ 0.06 for nonanatomic hepatectomy. The hepatectomies were categorized into three types： major hepatectomy （hemihepatectomy or a more extensive procedure）, bisegmentectomy, and limited hepatectomy. Univariate （Fishers exact test） and multivariate （the logistic regression model） analyses were used. RESULTS： Postoperative mortality was 5% after major hepatectomy, 3% after bisegmentectomy, and 3% after limited hepatectomy. The bhree percentages were comparable （P = 0.876）. The platelet count of ≤ 10× 10^4/μL was the strongest independent factor for postoperative mortality on univariate （P = 0.001） and multivariate （risk ratio, 12.5; P= 0.029） analyses. No patient with a platelet count of 〉7.3× 10^4/μL died of postoperative morbidity, whereas 25% （6/24 patients） of patients with a platelet count of ≤7.3×10^4/μL died （P〈0.001）. CONCLUSION： The selection criteria for hepatectomy procedures based on KICG are generally considered valid, because of the acceptable morbidity and mortality with these criteria. The preoperative platelet count independently affects morbidity and mortality after hepatectomy, suggesting that a combination of KICG and platelet count would further reduce postoperative mortality.

As a prototype material of colossal barocaloric effects, neopentylglycol is investigated by combining high-precision differential scanning calorimetric measurement and high-energy x-ray diffraction measurement. The diffraction data at constant temperatures indicate a first-order phase transition with thermal hysteresis as well as the phase transition asymmetry,specifically, the phase transition is completed faster at cooling than at heating. The analysis of resulting pair distribution function confirms the intermolecular disorder in the high-temperature phase. The phase transition asymmetry is quantitatively characterized by time-resolved x-ray diffraction, which is in agreement with the thermal measurement. Also, such an asymmetry is observed to be suppressed at high pressures.

Backgrounds: Aquaporins (AQPs), the mammalian water channels, have been localized in various organs, including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. We examined AQPs expression in rat models of massive intestineal resection to determine the functions of AQPs in the GI tract. Methods: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 15) underwent 90% resection of the small intestine, and Female Wistar-Kyoto rats (n = 10), received subtotal colectomy, and were sacrificed following the operations. RNase protection assay and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were performed to measure the AQPs mRNA expression in the GI tract. Immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm AQP8 protein expression. Results: AQP8 mRNA expression (mean ± standard error), was enhanced in the jejunum of the short bowel rats at days 7 and 14 (37.6% ± 1.4% and 18.5% ± 2.4%, respectively, p < 0.01). Enhancement of AQP8 mRNA was also observed in the remnant rectum of the subtotal colectomized rats at both days 21 and 42 (116.1% ± 4.5% and 143.3% ± 7.4%, respectively, p < 0.01). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated enhanced AQP8 expression in the remnant rectum of the subtotal colectomized rats. No intensive change was observed with other AQPs in both models. Conclusions: Our results suggest a compensatory role of AQP8 in the maintenance of intestinal fluid balance.
