Obj.ctive. Syndecan- 1 binds to various extracellular matrix components via its heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans (HS- GAG) and most of its biological functions are considered to be associated with this process. The aims of this study are to investigate its expression in cervical neoplasms. Methods. We investigated the expression of both the syndecan- 1 core protein and cell- surface HS- GAG by immunohistochemistry in 53 cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN), 19 microinvasive, 143 invasive cervical cancers, and 29 metastatic lymph node samples, and analyzed correlations with various clinicopathological features. Results. The progression of CIN to early invasive cancer was found to associate with reduced levels of both syndecan- 1 and HS- GAG expression. In squamous cell carcinomas, HS- GAG expression was significantly lower in cases with lymph- vascular space invasion. Additionally, the overall survival rates for patients exhibiting low HS- GAG expression was significantly lower than patients exhibiting high HS- GAG expression (P = 0.019). Low HS- GAG expression in positive nodes was determined to be a disease- free and overall survival prognostic factor (P = 0.028 and P = 0.018, respectively). Conclusion. The loss of syndecan- 1 and HS- GAG expression is an early event in cervical carcinogenesis. The loss of HS- GAG expression particularly in positive nodes can serve as an indicator of aggressive disease potential and poor prognosis in patients with invasive cervical cancer.

Obj.ctive: In this study, we measured both thymidine phosphorylase (TP) and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) levels, and then determined the TP/DPD ratios, in a number of invasive cervical cancers. Our aim was to investigate the association between these values and the clinicopathological features of invasive cervical cancer, including patient prognosis. Study design: Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, the TP and DPD activities were quantitatively measured in 51 patients with cervical cancer who had also undergone a radical hysterectomy. Results: The TP, DPD and TP/DPD values in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were found to be significantly higher than the levels in non-SCC. Furthermore, in a SCC subgroup, the TP/DPD levels were significantly higher in cases where parametrial invasion was evident, and in a non-SCC subgroup, these levels were also significantly higher in cases with deep stromal invasion, lymph-vascular space invasion, large tumor size and parametrial invasion. The disease-free survival rate is shown to be significantly higher in patients with low TP/DPD levels indicating that this ratio may be associated with both the progression and recurrence of invasive cervical cancer. Conclusion: TP/DPD ratios may be associated with both the progression and recurrence of invasive cervical cancer.

Obj.ctive: The purpose of the present study was to identify prognostic factors in surgically treated patients with stage IB- IIB cervical cancers, who also presented with positive pelvic nodes. Method: The patient population consisted of 68 individuals presenting with stage IB-IIB cervical cancers and with histologically proven pelvic lymph nodes. Result: We found no association between the type of adj.vant therapy and patient outcome. Multivariate analysis revealed that non-squamous histology was an independent prognostic factor for disease-free and overall survival rates. In squamous cell carcinomas, the bilateral nature of the positive nodes was found to be a significant factor for disease-free survival rates. In non-squamous cell carcinomas, positive nodes of more than 2 cm in size were found to be a signi-ficant factor for disease-free survival rates. Conclusion: Non-squamous histology was an independent prognostic factor and chemoradiotherapy did not improve the survival outcomes of the patients in this study population.

Reviewed are the present status and future prospects of the laser fusionresearch at the ILE Osaka. The Gekko XII and Peta Watt laser system have been operated forinvestigating the implosion hydrodynamics, fast ignition, and the relativistic laser plasmainteractions and so on. In particular, the fast ignition experiments with cone shell target havebeen in progress as the UK and US-j.pan collaboration programs. In the experiments, the implodedhigh density plasmas are heated by irradiating 500 j.level peta-watt laser pulse. The thermalneutron yield is found to increase by three orders of magnitude by inj.cting the peta-watt laserinto the cone shell target. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability experiment results are also reviewed isthis paper.

We have routinely performed staging with pelvic and/or paraaortic lymphadenectomy in patients with endometrial cancer having moderate to high risk for lymph node metastasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for the occurrence of early and late postoperative complications in patients managed primarily by surgery in our institution. Study design: Two-hundred and fifty-nine consecutive cases of endometrial cancer were enrolled in the study. Past history, body mass index, type of surgery, intraoperative findings, and follow-up information were collected from patient charts. Of these, 200, 127, and 30 patients underwent systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy, systematic paraaortic lymphadenectomy, and radical hysterectomy, respectively. The median numbers of dissected pelvic and paraaortic lymph nodes were 32 and 14, respectively. Results: None of the complications resulted in death. Of the study population, 36 early complications and 34 late complications occurred. Overall 65 patients (25.1% ) had at least one complication. Multivariate analysis revealed that a longer operative time and paraaortic lymphadenectomy were independent predictors for the occurrence of early and late postoperative complications, respectively. Conclusions: Since the therapeutic value of lymphadenectomy is still under evaluation, the indications for systematic pelvic and paraaortic lymphadenectomy should be carefully considered.

Understanding the behavior of matter at extreme pressures of the order of a megabar(Mbar)is essential to gain insight into various physical phenomena at macroscales—the formation of planets,young stars,and the cores of super-Earths,and at microscales—damage to ceramic materials and high-pressure plastic transformation and phase transitions in *** dynamic compression of solids up to Mbar pressures,even a solid with high strength exhibits plastic properties,causing the induced shock wave to split in two:an elastic precursor and a plastic shock *** phenomenon is described by theoretical models based on indirect measurements of material *** advent of x-ray free-electron lasers(XFELs)has made it possible to use their ultrashort pulses for direct observations of the propagation of shock waves in solid materials by the method of phase-contrast ***,there is still a lack of comprehensive data for verification of theoretical models of different ***,we present the results of an experiment in which the evolution of the coupled elastic-plastic wave structure in diamond was directly observed and studied with submicrometer spatial resolution,using the unique capabilities of the x-ray free-electron laser(XFEL).The direct measurements allowed,for the first time,the fitting and validation of the 2D failure model for diamond in the range of several *** experimental approach opens new possibilities for the direct verification and construction of equations of state of matter in the ultra-high-stress range,which are relevant to solving a variety of problems in high-energy-density physics.

The influence of a strong external magnetic field on the collimation of a high Mach number plasma flow and its collision with a solid obstacle is investigated experimentally and numerically. The laser irradiation （I - 2 × 10^14 W. cm-2） of a multilayer target generates a shock wave that produces a rear side plasma expanding flow. Immersed in a homogeneous 10 T external magnetic field, this plasma flow propagates in vacuum and impacts an obstacle located a few mm from the main target. A reverse shock is then formed with typical velocities of the order of 15-20 4- 5 km/s. The experimental results are compared with 2D radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the FLASH code. This platform allows investigating the dynamics of reverse shock, mimicking the processes occurring in a cataclysmic variable of polar type.
