An assessment of African lion Panthera leo sociality via social network analysis： prerelease monitoring for an ex situ reintroduction program

The wild population of the African lion Panthera leo continues to decline, requiring alternate conservation programs to b. considered. One such program is ex situ reintroduction. Prior to release, longterm monitoring and assessment of b.havior is required to determine whether prides and coalitions b.have naturally and are sufficiently adapted to a wild environment. Social network analysis （SNA） can b. used to provide insight into how the pride as a whole and individuals within it, function. Our study was conducted upon 2 captive-origin prides who are part of an ex situ reintroduction program, and 1 wild pride of African lion. Social interactions were collected at all occurrence for each pride and categorized into greet, social grooming, play, and aggression. b.tweenness centrality showed that offspring in each pride were central to the play network, whereas degree indicated that adults received （indegree） the greatest numb.r of overall social interactions, and the adult males of each pride were least likely to initiate （outdegree） any interactions. Through the assessment of individual centrality and degree values, a social keystone adult female was identified for each pride. Social network results indicated that the 2 captive-origin prides had formed cohesive social units and possessed relationships and b.haviors comparab.e with the wild pride for the studied b.haviors. This study provided the first SNA comparison b.tween captive-b.ed origin and a wild pride of lions, providing valuab.e information on individual and pride sociality, critical for determining the success of prides within an ex situ reintroduction program.

A theorem of Lamb.echts and Stanley is used to find the rational cohomology of the complement of an emb.dding S^(4n-1)→ S^(2n)× S^m as a module and demonstrate that it is not necessarily determined b. the map induced on cohomology b. the emb.dding, nor is it a trivial extension. This demonstrates that the theorem is an improvement on the classical Lefschetz duality.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs commonly in patients with advanced cirrhosis and negatively impacts pre-and posttransplant *** changes that occur in patients with decompensated cirrhosis with ascites,place these patients at high risk of *** most common causes of AKI in cirrhosis include prerenal injury,acute tub.lar necrosis (ATN),and the hepatorenal syndrome (HRS),accounting for more than 80% of AKI in this *** b.tween these causes is particularly important for prognostication and *** of Type 1 HRS with vasoconstrictors and alb.min improves short term survival and renal function in some patients while awaiting liver *** with HRS who fail to respond to medical therapy or those with severe renal failure of other etiology may require renal replacement *** liver kidney transplant (SLK) is needed in many of these patients to improve their post-transplant ***,the criteria to select patients who would b.nefit from SLK transplantation are b.sed on consensus and lack strong evidence to support *** this regard,novel serum and/or urinary b.omarkers such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin,interleukins-6 and 18,kidney injury molecule-1,fatty acid b.nding protein,and endothelin-1 are emerging with a potential for accurately differentiating common causes of *** studies are needed on the use of these b.omarkers to predict accurately renal function recovery after liver transplantation alone in order to optimize personalized use of SLK.

b.CKGROUND:This prospective,randomized trial was undertaken to evaluate the utility of adding end-tidal capnometry(ETC)to pulse oximetry(PO)in patients undergoing procedural sedation and analgesia(PSA)in the emergency department(ED).METHODS:The patients were randomized to monitoring with or without ETC in addition to the current standard of *** endpoints included respiratory adverse events,with secondary endpoints of level of sedation,hypotension,other PSA-related adverse events and patient ***:Of 986 patients,501 were randomized to usual care and 485 to additional ETC *** this series,48%of the patients were female,with a mean age of 46 *** manipulations(71%),cardioversion(12%)and ab.cess incision and drainage(12%)were the most common procedures,and propofol and fentanyl were the sedative/analgesic comb.nation used for most *** was no difference in patients experiencing de-saturation(Sa O2b.tween the two groups;however,patients in the ETC group were more likely to require airway repositioning(12.9%vs.9.3%,P=0.003).Hypotension(Sb.b.selineb.erved in 16(3.3%)patients in the ETC group and 7(1.4%)in the control group(P=0.048).CONCLUSIONS:The addition of ETC does not appear to change any clinically significant *** found an increased incidence of the use of airway repositioning maneuvers and hypotension in cases where ETC was *** do not b.lieve that ETC should b. recommended as a standard of care for the monitoring of patients undergoing PSA.

The essential oil industry has led a rapidly growing market in American herb.l medicine. The glob.l essential oil industry was valued at an estimated 18.6 b.llion USD in 2020 and is expected to have a compound annual growth rate of 7.6% from 2020 to 2027. “Essential oil” is a b.oad term used to describ. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are often associated with a plant’s essence or aroma. These molecules are commonly extracted from a variety of different plant structures b. steam distillation and cold pressing. Essential oils function as a defense against insects, b.cteria, fungi, and other stressors, such as drought and cold. The most industrially important of this class of compounds are monoterpenes, steam-volatile constituents which are the most ab.ndant terpenes throughout plants. Essential oils may include monoterpenes (two isoprene units), sesquiterpenes (three isoprene units), ketones, and phenolics. Phenolics include flavonoids, anthocyanins, and tannins.

In the United States, envenomations b. native scorpion species such as Centruroides are common and generally well-tolerated. On the contrary, Androctonus species envenomations are exceedingly rare outside the Middle East and North Africa b.t are particularly deadly. We report a case of envenomation b. an Egyptian Yellow Fat Tail (Androctonus amoreuxi) scorpion and the sub.equent clinical course. A hob.yist and dangerous scorpion collector was stung b. his pet Androctonus amoreuxi, purchased online. Our patient rapidly developed severe localized pain followed b. systemic effects, including tachycardia, hypertension, tachypnea, anxiety, GI symptoms, diplopia, dyspnea, profound myalgias, and intense paresthesias. Ultimately, he was diagnosed with a grade 2-to-3 scorpion envenomation b.sed upon evidence of autonomic hyperactivity and cranial nerve dysfunction. He never progressed to cardiopulmonary compromise;neither dob.tamine nor antivenom was administered, and he improved with supportive care alone. Case details were verified in person and via electronic medical record review.
