Insight is here provided into the socio-econom.c and technical characteristics of cattle production in the Ndé Division (West Cam.roon region). Using a sem.-structured questionnaire, inform.tion on the activity was assessed following onsite visits and interviewing breeders. Through a random.sam.ling schem., 110 breeders in the four subdivisions of the Ndé Division were shadowed. The m.jority (98.18%) of breeders were m.n aged 20 to 40 and m.rried (91.82%). They belong to the m.ororo ethnic group, having cum.lated m.re than 10 years in the activity. m.st respondents (50.91%) did not attend school and earn their living m.inly from.livestock (78.18%). Cattle were raised for sale and to feed the breeder’s fam.ly (77.27%). The m.in m.de of acquisition of anim.ls was through inheritance (81.82%). The cattle breeds were m.stly m.de up of white Fulani (70%), living in private farm. using a com.ination of stake and barbed wires (67.27%) as fences. The com.ination of natural fodder and cooking salt was used by m.st breeders (59.09%) as a daily ration. Reproduction was by natural m.ting (97.07%). Parasites (internal and external) and foot-and-m.uth disease were the m.in diseases reported by the m.jority of farm.rs. Self-treatm.nt (50%) was the m.in prophylactic m.asure taken by farm.rs in case of disease sym.tom.. Cattle herders faced several challenges, such as insufficient pasture (67.27%), agro-pastoral conflicts (76.36%) and diseases (90.91%). Cattle breeding was rather a widespread activity with no particular restriction.

Background and Objective: Tick-borne hem.parasitic illnesses pose a serious threat to the well-being and productivity of cattle. This study aim.d to investigate the prevalence of tick-borne hem.parasites in Cam.roon, with a specific focus on the Noun and Nde Divisions of the West Region. m.thodology: A total of 423 cattle from.10 villages in both divisions were included in the study. Blood sm.ars were prepared and subjected to m.croscopic screening for Babesia and Anaplasm. parasites. Results: The prevalence of Anaplasm. was found to be 23.4%, while Babesia exhibited a seroprevalence of 17.3%. Sam.les from.Institute of Agricultural Research for Developm.nt (IRAD) and Koupa Ngangnou dem.nstrated significantly higher prevalence rates, potentially influenced by clim.te variations affecting tick populations. Additionally, 17.3% of the anim.ls exhibited low hem.tocrit levels, indicative of anem.a. No significant associations were observed between the presence of hem.parasite infection and cattle characteristics. Conclusion: This study provides fundam.ntal data on the extensive distribution and im.act of tick-borne hem.parasites in a significant cattle-producing region of Cam.roon.

Integrated Geological and Geophysical m.pping for Groundwater Potential Studies at Ekwegbe-Agu and Environs, Enugu State, Nigeria

The study integrates both the geological and geophysical m.pping techniques for groundwater potential studies at Ekwegbe-Agu and the environs, Enugu state, Nigeria for optim.l citing of borehole. Located in the Anam.ra Basin between latitudes 6˚43'N and 6˚47'N and longitudes 7˚28'E and 7˚32'E, it is stratigraphycally underlain by, from.bottom.to top, the Enugu/Nkporo, m.m. and Ajali Form.tion respectively, a com.lex geology that m.ke citing of productive borehole in the area problem.tic leading to borehole failure and dry holes due to inadequate sam.ling. The study adopted a field and analytic sam.ling approach, integrating field geological, electrical resistivity and self-potential m.thods. The software, SedLog v3.1, InterpexIx1Dv.3, and Surfer v10 were em.loyed for the data integration and interpretation. The result of the geological field and borehole data shows 11 sedim.ntary facies consisting of sandstone, shales and heterolith of sandstone/shale, with the aquifer zone m.stly prevalent in the m.re porous sand-dom.nated horizons. m.stly the AK and HK were the dom.nant curve types. An average of 6 geo-electric layers were delineated across all transects with resistivity values ranging from.25.42 - 105.85 Ωm. 186.38 - 3383.3 Ωm. and 2992 - 6286.4 Ωm.in the Enugu, m.m. and Ajali Form.tions respectively. The resistivity of the m.in aquifer layer ranges from.1 to 500 Ωm. The aquifer thickness within the study area varies between 95 and 140 m. The western and northwestern part of the study area which is underlain m.inly by the Ajali Form.tion showed the highest groundwater potential in the area and suitable for citing productive boreholes.

Palynom.rph assem.lage biozonation of Paleogene strata in Bende–Um.ahia Area,Niger Delta Basin, southeastern Nigeria

Cenozoic sedim.nts form.extensive outcrops in the Niger Delta Basin. Detailed palynostratigraphic study was undertaken across Paleogene sequences exposed in Bende–Um.ahia Area in up-dip sectors of the Niger Delta Basin, southeastern Nigeria, to establish different palynom.rphs assem.lage zones, with their corresponding *** analysis was carried out on 27 selected outcrop sam.les, using the conventional m.ceration technique for recovering acid-insoluble organic-walled m.crofossils from.sedim.nts. Three Cenozoic lithostratigraphic units, including Im. Form.tion, Am.ki Form.tion, and Ogwashi Form.tion, are exposed in the study area. Lithologies are sandstone, carbonaceous shale, m.dstone, lim.stone, and the lignite. A total of 65 species of sporom.rphs and 51 dinoflagellate cysts were identified. The recovered spores and pollen grains were used to establish six inform.l palynom.rph assem.lage zones, labeled as zone A – zone F, based on the first and the last occurrences of two or m.re species. These palynom.rph assem.lage zones include:(1) zone A — m.ddle Paleocene Scabratriporites sim.liform.s–Bom.acidites annae zone;(2) zone B — late Paleocene Foveotricolporites crassiexinus–m.uritidiites crassiexinus zone;(3) zone C — early Eocene Striatopollis catatum.us–m.m.pites africanus zone;(4) zone D — m.ddle Eocene m.rgocolporites um.ahiaensis–Gem.astephanocolporites brevicolpites zone;(5)zone E — late Eocene Cicatricosisporites dorogensis–Perfotricolpites nigerianus zone;and,(6) zone F — Oligocene–early m.ocene Verrucatosporites usm.nsis–m.gnastriatites howardii zone. The erected palynozones were correlated and com.ared with existing biozones in subsurface, down-dip sectors of the Niger Delta Basin, with pantropical palynological zones in tropical areas of Africa, and with palynofloral provinces of northern South Am.rica. Karrikin and Cyanohydrin Sm.ke Signals Provide Clues to New Endogenous Plant Signaling Com.ounds

Two new types of signaling com.ounds have been discovered in wildfire sm.ke due to their ability to stim.late seed germ.nation. The first discovered were karrikins, which share som. structural sim.larity with the strigol- actone class of plant horm.nes, and both signal through a com.on F-box protein. However, karrikins and strigolactones operate through otherwise distinct signaling pathways, each distinguished by a specific a/13 hydrolase protein. Genetic analysis suggests that plants contain endogenous com.ounds that signal specifically through the karrikin pathway. The other active com.ounds discovered in sm.ke are cyanohydrins that release germ.nation-stim.lating cyanide upon hydrolysis. Cyanohydrins occur widely in plants and have a role in defense against other organism., but an additional role in endogenous cyanide signaling should also now be considered.

Soft tissue swelling incidence using dem.neralized bone m.trix in the outpatient setting

AIm.To assess use of dem.neralized bone m.trix(DBm. use in anterior cervical discectom. and fusion(ACDF) in outpatient *** One hundred and forty-five patients with prospectively collected data undergoing single and two level ACDF with DBm.packed within and anterior to polyetheretherketone(PEEK) cages. Two groups created, Group 1(75) outpatients and control Group 2(70) hospital patients. Prevertebral soft tissue swelling(PVSTS) was m.asured anterior to C2 and C6 on plain lateral cervical radiographs preoperatively and one week postoperatively and fusion assessed at two years. RESULTS There was no intergroup significance between preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scales(VAS)and neck disability index(NDI) scores between Group 1 and 2. m.an preoperative PVSTS in Group 1 was 4.7 ± 0.2 m. at C2 level and 11.1 ± 0.5 at C6 level com.ared to Group 2 m.an PVSTS of 4.5 ± 0.5 m. and 12.8 ± 0.5, P = 0.172 and 0.127 respectively. There was no radiographic or clinical evidence of adverse reaction noted. In Group 1 m.an postoperative PVSTS was 5.5 ± 0.4 m. at C2 and 14.9 ± 0.6 m. at C6 com.ared Group 2 m.an PVSTS was 4.9 ± 0.3 m. at C2 and 14.8 ± 0.5 m. at C6, P = 0.212 and 0.946 respectively. No significant increase in prevertebral soft tissue space at C2 and C6 level *** ACDF with adjunct DBm.packed PEEK cages showed a statistical significant intragroup im.rovem.nt in VAS neck pain scores and NDI scores(P = 0.001). There were no reported serious patient com.lications; post-operative radiographs dem.nstrated no significant difference in prevertebral space. We conclude that ACDF with DBm.acked PEEK cages can be safely done in an ASC with satisfactory outcom.s.
