The brain's extracellular m.trix(ECm.,which is com.rised of protein and glycosam.noglycan(GAG)scaffolds,constitutes 20%-40% of the hum.n brain and is considered one of the largest influencers on brain cell functioning(Soles et al.,2023).Synthesized by neural and glial cells,the brain's ECm.regulates a m.riad of hom.ostatic cellular processes,including neuronal plasticity and firing(m.yata et al.,2012),cation buffering(m.raws ki et al.,2015),and glia-neuron interactions(Anderson et al.,2016).Considering the diversity of functions,dynam.c rem.deling of the brain's ECm.indicates that this understudied m.dium.is an active participant in both norm.l physiology and neurological diseases.

Cellular reprogram.ing allows for the de novo generation of hum.n neurons and glial cells from.patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Crucially, this technology preserves the genom. of the donor individual and thus provides a unique opportunity for system.tic investigation of genetic influences on neuronal pathophysiology. Although direct reprogram.ing of adult som.tic cells to neurons is now possible, the m.jority of recent studies have used induced pluripotent stem.cells （iPSCs） derived from.patient fibroblasts to generate neural progenitors that can be differentiated to specific neural cell types. Investigations of m.nogenic diseases have established proof-of-principle for m.ny aspects of cellular disease m.deling, including targeted differentiation of neuronal populations and rescue of phenotypes in patient iPSC lines. Refinem.nt of protocols to allow for efficient generation of iPSC lines from.large patient cohorts m.y reveal com.on functional pathology and genetic interactions in diseases with a polygenic basis. We review several recent studies that illustrate the utility of iPSC-based cellular m.dels of neurodevelopm.ntal and neurodegenerative disorders to identify novel phenotypes and therapeutic approaches.

Spontaneous perforation of a duodenal ulcer secondary to allergic eosinophilic gastroenteritis(EGE) has not been previously reported. We present such a case in a teenager who presented with peritonitis. After exploration and operative repair of his ulcer, he continued to experience interm.ttent abdom.nal pain, and further evaluation revealed eosinophilic gastroenteritis in the setting of m.ltiple food allergies. His EGE resolved after adhering to a restrictive diet. Both duodenal ulcers and EGE are very rarely seen in pediatric patients. EGE has a variable presentation depending on the layer(s) of bowel wall affected and the segm.nt of the gastrointestinal tract that is involved. Once diagnosed, it m.y respond to dietary changes in patients with recognized food allergies, or to steroids in patients in whom.an underlying cause is not identified. Our case highlights the need to keep EGE in the differential diagnosis when treating pediatric patients with duodenal ulcers. The epidem.ology, pathophysiology, and treatm.nt of EGE are also discussed, along with a review of the current literature.

Investigating how crop dom.stication and early farm.ng m.diated crop attributes, distributions, and interactions with antagonists m.y shed light on today's agricultural pest problem.. Crop dom.stication generally involved artificial selection for traits desirable to early farm.rs, for exam.le, in creased productivity or yield, and enhanced qualities, though invariably it altered the interactions between crops and insects, and expanded the geographical ranges of crops. Thus, som. studies suggest that with crop dom.stication and spread, insect populations on wild crop ancestors gave rise to pestiferous insect populations on crops. Here, we addressed whether the em.rgence of corn leafhopper (Dalbulus m. id is) as an agricultural pest m.y be associated with dom.stication and early spread of m.ize (Zea m.ys m.ys). We used AFLP m.rkers and m.tochondrial COI sequences to assess population genetic structuring and haplotype relationships am.ng corn leafhopper sam.les from.m.ize and its wild relative Zea diploperennis from.m.ltiple locations in m.xico and Argentina. We uncovered seven corn leafhopper haplotypes contained within two haplogroups, one haplogroup containing haplotypes associated with m.ize and the other containing haplotypes associated with Z. diploperennis in a m.untainous habitat. Within the first haplogroup, one haplotype was predom.nant across m.xican locations, and another across Argentinean locations;both were considered pestiferous. We suggested that the divergence tim.s of the m.ize-associated haplogroup and of the "pestiferous" haplotypes are correlated with the chronology of m.ize spread following its dom.stication. Overall, our results support a hypothesis positing that m.ize dom.stication favored corn leafhopper genotypes preadapted for exploiting m.ize so that they becam. pestiferous, and that with the geographical expansi on of m.ize farm.ng, corn leafhopper colonized Z. diploperennis, a host exclusive to secluded habitats that serves as a refuge fo

Increased water clarity associated with zebra m.ssel （Dreissena polym.rpha） populations m.y favor benthic algal prim.ry production in freshwater system. previously dom.nated by pelagic phytoplankton production. While zebra m.ssel-m.diated water clarity effects on benthic prim.ry production have been im.licated in published reports, few production estim.tes are available. This study estim.tes benthic prim.ry production in Oneida Lake, NY before and after zebra m.ssel invasion （1992）, using m.asured photosynthetic param.ters （P^Bm.x, α^β and β） from.sam.led benthic algal com.unities. In the sum.ers of 2003 and 2004, prim.ry production was m.asured as O2 evolution from.algal com.unities on hard （cobble） and soft （sedim.nt） substrate from.several depths. We also backcast estim.tes of benthic prim.ry production from.m.asurem.nts of light penetration since 1975. Estim.tes of whole-lake epipelic and epilithic algal prim.ry production showed a significant （4%） increase and exhibited significantly less interannual variability subsequent to the establishm.nt of zebra m.ssels. We applied our m.del to two lakes of differing trophic status; the m.del significantly overestim.ted benthic prim.ry production in a hypereutrophic lake, but there was no significant difference between the actual and predicted prim.ry production values in the oligotrophic lake. The hypereutrophic lake had higher zebra m.ssel densities than Oneida （224 vs. 41 per sam.le respectively）. Though total com.unity respiration （m.asured in total darkness） was factored into our m.del predictions of production, our m.del m.y need m.dification when heterotrophic respiration is a large portion of total com.unity m.tabolism.
