Increased Benthic Algal Primary Production in Response to the Invasive Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in a Productive Ecosystem,Oneida Lake,New York

Increased water clarity associated with zebra mussel （Dreissena polymorpha） populations may favor benthic algal primary production in freshwater systems previously dominated by pelagic phytoplankton production. While zebra mussel-mediated water clarity effects on benthic primary production have been implicated in published reports, few production estimates are available. This study estimates benthic primary production in Oneida Lake, NY before and after zebra mussel invasion （1992）, using measured photosynthetic parameters （P^Bmax, α^β and β） from sampled benthic algal communities. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, primary production was measured as O2 evolution from algal communities on hard （cobble） and soft （sediment） substrate from several depths. We also backcast estimates of benthic primary production from measurements of light penetration since 1975. Estimates of whole-lake epipelic and epilithic algal primary production showed a significant （4%） increase and exhibited significantly less interannual variability subsequent to the establishment of zebra mussels. We applied our model to two lakes of differing trophic status; the model significantly overestimated benthic primary production in a hypereutrophic lake, but there was no significant difference between the actual and predicted primary production values in the oligotrophic lake. The hypereutrophic lake had higher zebra mussel densities than Oneida （224 vs. 41 per sample respectively）. Though total community respiration （measured in total darkness） was factored into our model predictions of production, our model may need modification when heterotrophic respiration is a large portion of total community metabolism.

Background: Orthopedic surgeons often refer patients to hand therapy following orthopedic injury or surgery to facilitate recovery and maximize outcomes. Patients should be a key part of the shared decision-making process when it comes to their rehabilitation. While there is existing literature investigating factors considered by patients when choosing other medical providers, there are currently no studies investigating factors considered by patients when choosing a hand therapist. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate public perception of factors which are important when choosing a hand therapist. Methods: A convenience sample (N = 220) of adults over the age of 18 completed an anonymous online survey using an internet crowdsourcing platform. Respondents were asked to quantitatively rank the importance of 10 predetermined factors related to selecting a hand therapist. Results: Respondents ranked insurance coverage and credentialing as a certified hand therapist as highest in terms of importance. Conclusion: We found that the factors people consider important when selecting a hand therapist are similar to the factors described in the medical literature that are important when selecting a physician or other healthcare provider. The results have implications for physicians when ensuring continuity of care for their patients.

Background:The incorporation of legumes,specifically alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.),into bermudagrass(Cynodon spp.)-based pasture systems in the southeastern United States has increased in recent years as an alternative to synthetic nitrogen(N)***:A small plot evaluation was conducted in Shorter,Alabama,and Tifton,Georgia,USA,to evaluate the impact of harvest height(HH)and harvest frequency(HF)on agronomic characteristics of alfalfa+bermudagrass mixtures in southeastern United ***:Results from both locations revealed that the longer the HF and the shorter the HH,the greater the alfalfa retention was in the stand(p<0.01).HH did not impact any of the reported nutritive value parameters,while longer HF resulted in lower total digestible nutrients,lower crude protein,higher acid detergent fiber,and lower 48 h in vitro dry matter digestibility(p<0.01).Both HH and HF impacted forage accumulation at both locations(p<0.01).HH resulted in different trends at each location,while longer frequencies generally increased forage ***:This research confirmed recent findings from comparable evaluations in the southeastern United States,in that increasing HH and decreasing HF improved alfalfa retention while having a negligible effect on nutritive value or forage accumulation.

This review,which was adapted from a Tenth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones(IWTC-10)report,discusses research findings and operational practices relevant to cyclone types and phase transitions(extratropical,subtropical,and tropical).The cyclone phase space(CPS)method is widely used in both historical investigations and real-time evaluation of cyclone type and transition;however,CPS parameter values depend on input data resolution,and universal thresholds do not currently exist to delineate when a cyclone transitions from one type to *** of phase transitions in a changing climate highlight potential latitude shifts in extratropical transition and increased potential for tropical transition,but realistic projections of future trends likely require high-resolution simulations that can capture the cyclone warm *** meteorological centers apply varied approaches to cyclone classification via CPS parameters and other criteria,some of which depend on the tropical basin,yet these approaches cannot fully address challenges in operational classification and subsequently in communicating risks associated with these phase *** recommend a multivariate historical assessment of tropical and subtropical cyclones across all basins in which they occur,including the South Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea,to identify the potential for a more universal cyclone classification approach that meets operational needs.

Accuracy of abdominal ultrasound for the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction in the emergency department

BACKGROUND: Emergency physicians frequently encounter patients with acute small bowel obstructions(SBO). Although computed tomography(CT) imaging is the current gold standard in the assessment of patients with suspected SBO in the emergency department, a few studies have examined the use of ultrasound as an alternative imaging technique. METHODS: We evaluated the accuracy of ultrasound performed in the ED by a variety of providers(physicians with various levels of training, physician assistants) compared to CT imaging in 47 patients with suspected SBOs. RESULTS: Our data demonstrated a sensitivity of 93.8% and a specificity of 93.3% when compared to abdominal CT, and a sensitivity of 94.3% and specificity of 95.2% using a composite endpoint of abdominal CT and discharge diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound can play an important role in the identification of small bowel obstructions in ED patients.

Climate Change Community-Based and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Strategies in Selected Coastal Barangays in Masinloc, Zambales, Philippines

Climate change continues to intensify existing disaster risks and vulnerabilities in the Philippines. Thus, implementation of climate change adaptation strategies is vital to counter the effects of climate change. It is in this context that this study was undertaken to analyze the need or urgency to adopt community and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies among selected coastal barangays (villages) of Masinloc, Zambales, Philippines. Various methods of data collection were utilized such as secondary data collection, primary data collection through household survey, key informant interviews, and focus group. Results of the study indicate that in terms of community-based adaptation strategies, all of the seven barangays in Masinloc have moderate necessity. However, only Barangays Bani and Collat have high adaptation capacity in terms of infrastructure and disaster preparedness. The execution of several community-based adaptation strategies helps these barangays to respond immediately and appropriately to the moderate risk posed by floods and storm surges. On the other hand, in terms of ecosystem-based adaptation strategies, all of the seven barangays have moderate necessity which implies that they have moderate vulnerability and risk to flood and storm surge but have high adaptation capacity in terms of the conservation and protection of coastal resources (mangroves and sea grasses). The barangays implemented the necessary ecosystem-based adaptation mechanisms that they might need in the future. This only means that when they are faced with disaster, the local communities are prepared to respond appropriately and to cope up with the effects of extreme weather events which lead to floods and storm surge. Even though most of the ecosystem-based adaptation strategies are conducted by the seven barangays, there are several community-based adaptation strategies that are still lacking which will protect them from the effect of floods and storm surges. Invasive species are considered one of the greatest threats to native ecosystems, second only to habitat loss and fragmentation. Despite this, the temporal dynamics of invasions are poorly understood, with most studies focusing on a single time point, providing us with only a snapshot of the biology and genetics of the invader. We investigated the invasion of Lord Howe Island by the delicate skinkLampropholis delicataand assessed the introduction history and genetic structure of this species over a 5-year period. Using genetic data taken from 2007, and again in 2011/12, we examined changes in the population genetic structure (whether new haplotypes had been introduced to the island, and shifts in haplotype frequencies) of the species on the island between these two time points. No new haplotypes were introduced to the island between 2007 and 2011/12; however, significant shifts in haplotype frequencies across the island were detected. We conclude that the delicate skink is expanding its range into the southern regions of the island and that the haplotype frequencies on Lord Howe Island are still in a state of highly dynamic flux. Our study highlights the importance of considering invasions as dynamic and studying them in such a way that enable us to better manage their impacts.

Stroke is the leading cause of death and ***,there is no effective pharmacological treatment for this disease,which can be partially attributed to the inability to efficiently deliver therapeutics to the *** we report the development of natural compound-derived nanoparticles(NPs),which function both as a potent therapeutic agent for stroke treatment and as an efficient carrier for drug delivery to the ischemic ***,we screened a collection of natural nanomaterials and identified betulinic acid(BA)as one of the most potent antioxidants for stroke ***,we engineered BA NPs for preferential drug release in acidic ischemic tissue through chemically converting BA to betulinic amine(BAM)and for targeted drug delivery through surface conjugation of AMD3100,a CXCR4 *** resulting AMD3100-conjugated BAM NPs,or A-BAM NPs,were then assessed as a therapeutic agent for stroke treatment and as a carrier for delivery of NA1,a neuroprotective *** show that intravenous administration of A-BAM NPs effectively improved recovery from stroke and its efficacy was further enhanced when NA1 was *** to their multifunctionality and significant efficacy,we anticipate that A-BAM NPs have the potential to be translated both as a therapeutic agent and as a drug carrier to improve the treatment of stroke.
