Pituitary Lesions, Obesity, and m.senteric Lipom.s in Insulin-Resistant Horses

The aim.of the current study was to identify associations between pituitary lesions, body condition scores, and m.senteric lipom.s in horses with insulin resistance. Necropsy exam.nations were perform.d following euthanasia in 30 adult horses designated as insulin resistant (n = 11) or insulin sensitive (n = 19). Insulin sensitivity was determ.ned using the insulin-m.dified frequently sam.led intravenous glucose tolerance test and resting insulin concentrations. At necropsy, m.senteric lipom.s were m.asured. The pituitary and adrenal glands, pancreas, and liver were evaluated histologically;pituitary glands were scored based on published criteria. Insulin-resistant horses had significantly higher pituitary scores (p = 0.0035) and body condition scores (p = 0.0001), even when adjusting for age, and a greater frequency of m.senteric lipom.s (p = 0.014) and greater lipom. area (p = 0.0332) than insulin-sensitive horses. Regardless of insulin status, horses with pituitary scores ≥3 (diffuse hyperplasia;n = 25) had higher body condition scores (p = 0.0313) and a greater frequency of m.senteric lipom.s (p m.senteric lipom.s. Detection of higher pituitary scores in insulin-resistant horses suggested an association between insulin resistance and pituitary m.rphology. Horses in the insulin-resistant group and those with high pituitary scores had higher body condition scores and a greater frequency of m.senteric lipom.s. These horses m.ght be at increased risk for lipom.-associated colic.

目的旨在描述制定及评估一项短期留学生研究和教育项目。方法研究分为项目制定与实施及评价2部分。根据1名国际学生的短期访学需求,护理学院的全球护理项目协调员和首席导师共同确定项目基本内容和团队成员。该项目学习活动考虑了该国际学生对老年人和居家临终关怀的兴趣,包括4项内容:.开展研究工作,参与教学活动,参与临床实践活动,以及特殊活动和专业发展培训课程。在为期6个月的访学结束时,对参与此次教学活动的教师、研究生及留学生进行访谈和简短问卷调查。结果通过访谈了解到3个方面的内容:通过参与该项目中获得的经验(增强了教育和研究的多样性,获得了新的全球医疗保健知识,对文化意识的自我反思和促进);项目实施的障碍和挑战(签证申请过程,英语语言障碍,缺乏公共交通设施,时间安排冲突);克服这些障碍和挑战的策略(在课程中增加文化多样性信息;与其他同学一起学习英语;使用不同的沟通技巧;在签证申请过程中与大学全球事务办公室持续合作;提供互动体验)。所有项目参与者都对该项目表示非常满意(4.67±0.50),认为对他们在科研、教学和临床实践方面的护理技能有很大影响(4.67±0.50)。结论此次项目的参与者均获得了相关经验,可用于今后的教学指导活动。国际护理专业学生需要得到帮助才能更好地适应访学环境,教师必须具有文化敏感性,了解学生的学习需求,并倡导营造适合学生学习的环境。

Use of Critical Ethnography to Study the Pm.CT Program

Background: Despite the efforts at establishing Prevention of m.ther to Child Transm.ssion (Pm.CT) program. in Rwanda, there are still children who are becom.ng infected through m.ther-to-child transm.ssion of HIV. The purpose of our research study was to explore the experiences of HIV positive wom.n using Pm.CT program.to prevent HIV transm.ssion in Rwanda. m.thodology: In this study, a qualitative approach using a critical ethnographic design was used to answer to our research question and with the aim.to discover the m.aning, process, and context of the studied phenom.non. In this paper, we discussed ethnography, critical ethnography, and its related philosophical assum.tions as well as illustrating the rational for the use of critical ethnography to study the Pm.CT program. Critical ethnography ultim.tely will contribute to raising awareness on how we can prevent new infections am.ng children born from.HIV positive m.thers who are using the Pm.CT program. The findings suggested a wide range of challenging factors that are shaped by social, political, cultural, econom.c, ethnic, and gender values, and that directly and indirectly affect the uptake of the Pm.CT program. While using the critical realist ontology, we discovered m.ltiple truths about the challenging factors for HIV+ m.thers experience to uptake the Pm.CT program. We triangulated their experiences with the findings gathered from.healthcare providers, Pm.CT leaders and policym.kers, field observation, and docum.nt analysis. No previous studies on this phenom.non used a critical lens to explore the reality behind a wide range of experiences of m.thers using the Pm.CT program.to prevent HIV transm.ssion in Rwanda. Conclusion: The critical nature of this inquiry contributed to the depth and breadth of knowledge related to the delivery of the Pm.CT program.to prevent m.CT of HIV.

Photosystem.II （PSII）, a m.m.rane protein com.lex, catalyzes the photochem.cal oxidation of water to m.lecular oxygen. This enzym. com.lex consists of approxim.tely 20 stoichiom.tric protein com.onents. However, due to the highly energetic reactions it catalyzes as part of its norm.l activity, PSII is continuously dam.ged and repaired. With advances in protein detection technologies, an increasing num.er of sub-stoichiom.tric PSII proteins have been identified, m.ny of which aid in the biogenesis and assem.ly of this protein com.lex. Psb32 （SII1390） has previously been identified as a protein associated with highly active purified PSII preparations from.the cyanobacterium.Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. To investigate its function, the subcellular localization of Psb32 and the im.act of deletion of the psb32 gene on PSII were analyzed. Here, we show that Psb32 is an integral m.m.rane protein, prim.rily located in the thylakoid m.m.ranes. Al- though not required for cell viability, Psb32 protects cells from.oxidative stress and additionally confers a selective fitness advantage in m.xed culture experim.nts. Specifically, Psb32 protects PSII from.photodam.ge and accelerates its repair. Thus, the data suggest that Psb32 plays an im.ortant role in m.nim.zing the effect of photoinhibition on PSII.

Application of reprogram.ed patient cells to investigate the etiology of neurological and psychiatric disorders

Cellular reprogram.ing allows for the de novo generation of hum.n neurons and glial cells from.patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Crucially, this technology preserves the genom. of the donor individual and thus provides a unique opportunity for system.tic investigation of genetic influences on neuronal pathophysiology. Although direct reprogram.ing of adult som.tic cells to neurons is now possible, the m.jority of recent studies have used induced pluripotent stem.cells （iPSCs） derived from.patient fibroblasts to generate neural progenitors that can be differentiated to specific neural cell types. Investigations of m.nogenic diseases have established proof-of-principle for m.ny aspects of cellular disease m.deling, including targeted differentiation of neuronal populations and rescue of phenotypes in patient iPSC lines. Refinem.nt of protocols to allow for efficient generation of iPSC lines from.large patient cohorts m.y reveal com.on functional pathology and genetic interactions in diseases with a polygenic basis. We review several recent studies that illustrate the utility of iPSC-based cellular m.dels of neurodevelopm.ntal and neurodegenerative disorders to identify novel phenotypes and therapeutic approaches.

颗粒材料在自然界和工程应用中极为常见,深入理解并合理利用其流变性对于预测与减轻自然灾害以及描述多种工程材料力学性质至关重要.然而,现有研究仍未建立起颗粒之间摩擦特性与颗粒集合体宏观的力学特性之间的物理联系.本文利用离散单元法(DEm.考察了不同颗粒间摩擦系数对定压剪切条件下的颗粒材料的流变性的影响,试图建立基于粒间摩擦的颗粒流变学模型.本研究计算显示,增加颗粒之间的摩擦系数可以显著改变颗粒集合体的整体流变特性,增加颗粒系统的有效摩擦系数µeff,并减小定压剪切条件下的稳态固体体积分数ϕs.在此基础上,本报告提出用于描述不同粒间摩擦特性颗粒材料流变性的无量纲数m.并建立摩擦流变模型.同时考察了m.无量纲颗粒温度Θ之间的关系,分析了摩擦系数对于粒间作用力概率分布函数的影响.进一步延伸了传统的流变模型的应用范围,有助于建立更为普适的颗粒材料本构模型.

Spatial coherence of electrically pum.ed random.terahertz lasers

Light sources with high radiance and tailored coherence properties are highly desirable for im.ging applications in the m.d-infrared and terahertz(THz) spectral regions, which host a large variety of m.lecular absorptions and distinctive fingerprints to be exploited for sensing and tom.graphy. Here, we characterize the spatial coherence of random.m.ltim.de THz quantum.cascade lasers(QCLs) em.tting > m.W optical power per m.de and showing low divergence(10°–30°), perform.ng a m.dified Young’s double-slit experim.nt. Partial spatial coherence values ranging between 0.16 and 0.34 are retrieved, depending on the specific degree of disorder. These values are significantly lower than those(0.82) of conventional Fabry–Perot THz QCLs exploiting an identical active region quantum.design. We then incorporate the devised low spatial coherence random.lasers into a confocal im.ging system.with m.crom.ter spatial resolution and dem.nstrate notable im.ging perform.nces, at THz frequencies,against spatial cross talk and speckles.
