Gender differences of lower urinary tract symptoms in older Chinese Americans

Objective to describe whether or not there are gender differences in lower urinary tract symptoms(LUtS)prevalence and risk factors in community-dwelling older Chinese *** We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective cross-sectional population-based survey of Chinese Americans aged 60 years and older between January 2011 and December 2013 in English,Mandarin,Cantonese,taishanese,or teochew.A clinical review of systems was used to assess LUtS,which included urinary frequency,urgency,burning and/or pain,blood in urine,and urinary *** Of the total 3157 people queried,42%were men and 58%were *** men reported LUtS compared to women(32.9%vs.28.6%,p=0.01).In a multivariable analysis,female gender(adjusted odds ratio[aOR]0.60,95%confidence interval[CI]0.49-0.73),being married(aOR 0.79,95%CI 0.65-0.97),and smoking(aOR 0.66,95%CI 0.49-0.88)were found to be protective,while traditional Chinese medicine use(aOR 1.51,95%CI 1.28-1.78),heart disease(aOR 1.54,95%CI 1.24-1.91),and anxiety(aOR 1.69,95%CI 1.25-2.28)were most strongly associated with increased odds of *** examining genders separately,being married was found to be protective only in ***,unique factors found in men were hypertension,heart disease,and practice of tai *** In this large population-based study,LUtS were more prevalent in older Chinese American men than *** also found gender-specific factors that influenced the odds of reporting LUtS;however,traditional Chinese medicine use was the only factor that was shared by both *** longitudinal investigations are needed to elucidate these underlying mechanisms to provide evidence-based and culture-specific guidelines for this rapidly growing population.

颗粒材料在自然界和工程应用中极为常见,深入理解并合理利用其流变性对于预测与减轻自然灾害以及描述多种工程材料力学性质至关重要.然而,现有研究仍未建立起颗粒之间摩擦特性与颗粒集合体宏观的力学特性之间的物理联系.本文利用离散单元法(DEM)考察了不同颗粒间摩擦系数对定压剪切条件下的颗粒材料的流变性的影响,试图建立基于粒间摩擦的颗粒流变学模型.本研究计算显示,增加颗粒之间的摩擦系数可以显著改变颗粒集合体的整体流变特性,增加颗粒系统的有效摩擦系数µeff,并减小定压剪切条件下的稳态固体体积分数ϕs.在此基础上,本报告提出用于描述不同粒间摩擦特性颗粒材料流变性的无量纲数M,并建立摩擦流变模型.同时考察了M和无量纲颗粒温度Θ之间的关系,分析了摩擦系数对于粒间作用力概率分布函数的影响.进一步延伸了传统的流变模型的应用范围,有助于建立更为普适的颗粒材料本构模型.

Dear Editor,Genetics-focused approaches have been widely used to uncover major genetic variants associated with performance ***,manipulating,and editing genetic variants significantly improve crop ***,the genetic component explains a portion of performance variation,and the environ-mental component contributes to the remaining,often large,portion(Laidig et al.,2017;Bonecke et al.,2020;Li et al.,2021).to ensure superior and robust performance,elite varieties are extensively tested across multiple years and *** extensive performance records,coupled with climatic profiles,could be leveraged to understand climate's impact on agriculture through approaches parallel to quantitative genetics approaches(Figure 1A).

Climate change poses many risks to economically and ecologically crucial *** pine(Pinus palustris Mill.)trees are keystone species that were once dominant across the southeastern United States,but now occupy less than 5%of their historic range and are thus classified as *** we review the current status and challenges facing longleaf pine trees,what is known on how changing climate will impact longleaf growth and reproduction,and gaps in the literature that are important to *** found that many fundamental aspects of longleaf pine growth and reproduction are ***,these systems are complex,and not all is known about each factor that influences the relationship between climate,growth,and reproductive ***,long-term data sets capable of examining all relevant factors in these relationships do not currently *** fill necessary gaps,we recommend a joint approach between using readily available data sets and establishing new long-term monitoring plots targeted to collect data on missing or poorly understood *** review provides a clue from an ecological complexity perspective to understand and manage longleaf pine forests under climate change.

Social challenges from rival conspecifics are common in the lives of animals, and changes in an animal's social environment can influence physiology and behavior in ways that appear to be adaptive in the face of continued social instability (i.e. social priming). Recently, it has become clear that testosterone, long thought to be the primary mediator of these effects, may not always change in response to social challenges, an observation that highlights gaps in our understanding of the proximate mechanisms by which animals respond to their social environment. Here, our goal is to address the degree to which testosterone mediates organismal responses to social cues. to this end, we review the behavioral and physiological consequences of social challenges, as well as their underlying hormonal and gene regulatory mechanisms. We also present a new case study from a wild songbird, the dark-eyed junco (), in which we find largely divergent genome-wide transcriptional changes induced by social challenges and testosterone, respectively, in muscle and liver tissue. Our review underscores the diversity of mechanisms that link the dynamic social environment with an organisms' genomic, hormonal, and behavioral state. this diversity among species, and even among tissues within an organism, reveals new insights into the pattern and process by which evolution may alter proximate mechanisms of social priming.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)are at an increased risk for venous thromboembolism(VtE).VtE events carry significant morbidity and mortality,and have been associated with worse outcomes in patients with *** have suggested that the hypercoagulable nature of the disease stems from a complex interplay of systems that include the coagulation cascade,natural coagulation inhibitors,fibrinolytic system,endothelium,immune system,and ***,clinical factors that increase the likelihood of a VtE event among IBD patients include older age(though some studies suggest younger patients have a higher relative risk of VtE,the incidence in this population is much lower as compared to the older IBD patient population),pregnancy,active disease,more extensive disease,hospitalization,the use of certain medications such as corticosteroids or tofacitinb,and IBD-related *** the increased risk of VtE among IBD patients and the safety of pharmacologic prophylaxis,adherence rates among hospitalized IBD patients appear to be ***,recent data suggests that there is a population of high risk IBD patients who may benefit from post-discharge *** review will provide an overview of patient specific factors that affect VtE risk,elucidate reasons for lack of VtE prophylaxis among hospitalized IBD patients,and focus on recent data describing those at highest risk for recurrent VtE post-hospital discharge.

Longitudinal bone growth relies on endochondral ossification in the cartilaginous growth plate,where chondrocytes accumulate and synthesize the matrix scaffold that is replaced by *** chondroprogenitors in the resting zone maintain the continuous turnover of chondrocytes in the growth *** is a leading cause of growth retardation in children;however,after recovery from nutrient deprivation,bone growth is accelerated beyond the normal rate,a phenomenon termed catch-up *** nutritional status is a known regulator of long bone growth,it is largely unknown whether and how chondroprogenitor cells respond to deviations in nutrient ***,using fate-mapping analysis in Axin2CreERt2 mice,we showed that dietary restriction increased the number of Axin2+chondroprogenitors in the resting zone and simultaneously inhibited their *** nutrient deficiency was resolved,the accumulated chondroprogenitor cells immediately restarted differentiation and formed chondrocyte columns,contributing to accelerated ***,we showed that nutrient deprivation reduced the level of phosphorylated Akt in the resting zone and that exogenous IGF-1 restored the phosphorylated Akt level and stimulated differentiation of the pooled chondroprogenitors,decreasing their *** study of Axin2CreERt2 revealed that nutrient availability regulates the balance between accumulation and differentiation of chondroprogenitors in the growth plate and further demonstrated that IGF-1 partially mediates this regulation by promoting the committed differentiation of chondroprogenitor cells.

Aerosol technology provides efficient methods for producing nanoparticles with well-controlled composition and size distribution. this review provides an overview of methods and results obtained by using aerosol technology for producing nanostruetures for a variety of applications in semiconductor physics and device technology. Examples are given from： production of metal and metal alloy particles： semiconductor nanoparticles; semiconductor nanowires, grown both in the aerosol phase and on substrates; physics studies based on individual aerosol-generated devices; and large area deviees based on aerosol particles.
