comparison between tocotrienol and omeprazole on gastric growth factors in stress-exposed rats

AIM To investigate and compare the effects of tocotrienol and omeprazole on gastric growth factors in rats exposed to water-immersion restraint stress(WIRS).METHODS Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups of seven rats. The two control groups were administered vitamin-free palm oil(vehicle) and the two treatment groups were given omeprazole(20 mg/kg) or tocotrienol(60 mg/kg) by oral gavage. After 28 d of treatment, rats from one control group and both treated groups were subjected to WIRS one time for 3.5 h. Gastric lesions were measured and gastric tissues were obtained to measure vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), epidermal growth factor(EGF), basic fibroblast growth factor(b FGF), and transforming growth factor-alpha(TGF-α) m RNA expression. RESULTS Rats exposed to WIRS for 3.5 h demonstrated the presence of considerable ulcers in the form of gastric erosion. The lesion index in the stressed control(S) group was increased(P < 0.001) compared to the tocotrienol treated and omeprazole treated groups. Stress led to a decrease in gastric VEGF(P < 0.001), b FGF(P < 0.001) and TGF-α(P < 0.001) m RNA levels and caused an increase in EGF m RNA(P < 0.001) that was statistically significant compared to the nonstressed control group. Although both treatment agents exerted similar ulcer reducing ability, only treatment with tocotrienol led to increased expression of VEGF(P = 0.008), b FGF(P = 0.001) and TGF-α(P = 0.002) m *** Tocotrienol provides gastroprotective effects in WIRSinduced ulcers. Compared to omeprazole, tocotrienol exerts a similar protective effect, albeit through multiple mechanisms of protection, particularly through up-regulation of growth factors that assist in repair of gastric tissue injuries.

GAPDH expression as a measurement of transfection efficiency for p<sup>16INK4a</sup>gene silencing (siRNA) in senescent human diploid fibroblasts

Human diploid fibroblasts (HDFs) undergo a limited number of cell divisions in culture. After certain population doublings, they reach a state of irreversible growth arrest known as replicative senescence. Senescent HDFs showed several molecular and cytological changes such as large flat morphology, expression of senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA β-gal) activity and altered gene expression. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) has been demonstrated to be a potential research tool to analyse gene function and pathway. Expression of an appropriate housekeeping or reference gene can be used as a measurement of transfection efficiency in siRNA. Therefore this study was designed to determine the suitability of GAPDH expression as a measurement of transfection efficiency for p16INK4a gene silencing in HDFs aging model. GAPDH knockdown with an appropriate transfection reagent was measured by quantitative real time RT-PCR while cellular senescence was characterized based on morphological changes, expression of SA β-gal and p16INK4a expression levels. Our findings showed that GAPDH knockdown represents silencing efficiency and down regulation of p16INK4a in senescent transfected HDFs caused morphological alterations which results in the formation of spindle shaped fibroblasts. This study demonstrated the suitability of GAPDH expression as a measurement of transfection efficiency for p16INK4a gene silencing in HDFs aging model.

Attribute Weighted Naïve Bayes Classifier

The naïve Bayes classifier is one of the commonly used data mining methods for *** its simplicity,naïve Bayes is effective and computationally *** the strong attribute independence assumption in the naïve Bayes classifier makes it a tractable method for learning,this assumption may not hold in real-world *** enhancements to the basic algorithm have been proposed in order to alleviate the violation of attribute independence *** these methods improve the classification performance,they do not necessarily retain the mathematical structure of the naïve Bayes model and some at the expense of computational *** approach to reduce the naïvetéof the classifier is to incorporate attribute weights in the conditional *** this paper,we proposed a method to incorporate attribute weights to naïve *** evaluate the performance of our method,we used the public benchmark *** compared our method with the standard naïve Bayes and baseline attribute weighting *** results show that our method to incorporate attribute weights improves the classification performance compared to both standard naïve Bayes and baseline attribute weighting methods in terms of classification accuracy and F1,especially when the independence assumption is strongly violated,which was validated using the Chi-square test of independence.

A diverse range of remarkable boron n itride (BN) nano structures subsumi ng nano-homs, nano-rods, nano-platelets, and clusters of hollow nano spheres (nano-onions, arguably of greatest applied and fun damental in terest) have bee n produced exclusively from crystalline BN precursor powder via lamp ablation. The procedure is safe, devoid of toxic reagents, simple, rapid and scalable—generating some genres of nan oparticles that had previously proved elusive. Product structure and composition were unambiguously assessed by high-resoluti on transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy.

Influence of Size of ZnO Nanorods on Light Extraction Enhancement of GaN-Based Light-Emitting Diodes

We investigate the influence of size of ZnO nanorods on the light extraction efficiency(LEE)enhancement of GaN-based light-emitting diodes(GaN-LEDs).ZnO nanorods with different sizes are hydrothermally grown on patterned indium-doped tin oxide(ITO)electrodes of the GaN-LEDs in zinc acetate aqueous solutions of different *** are conducted for the LEE enhancement of the LEDs with ZnO nanorods,compared to these without ZnO *** results suggest that the LEE of the LEDs with ZnO nanorods increases with the increasing size of ZnO ***,a saturation trend for the LEE improvement is also observed,which is attributed to the maximum limitation of light coupled into ZnO nanorods from GaN-based LEDs,and the reflection is increased by the increasing top surface of the ZnO nanorods.

The drying kinetics of Roselle （Hibiscus sabdariffa L） of variety Terengganu （UMKL-1） and the quality attribution of Roselle were studied. The experiments were conducted using four different drying methods, including solar greenhouse drying （SD）, solar greenhouse with intermittent heat pump drying （SIHP）, hot air drying （HA） and heat pump drying （HP）. Among the four drying methods, HP achieved the highest drying rate at a range from 0.054 g H20-（g DM）-1. rain-1 to 0.212 g H20-（g DM）-1. rain 1 while SD had the lowest drying rate, measured at 0.042 g H2O. （g DM） ***- 1. The analysis on colour kinetics revealed that there is no significant colour loss （p 〉 0.05） observed from HP＇s dried Roselle. Greater amount of flavonoid compounds i.e. protocatechuic acid was found in SD and SIHP dried finished product whereas HP＇s dried Roselle contains higher percentage of catechin as compared to other drying methods.

Core outcome set for stable angina pectoris in traditional Chinese medicine(COS-SAP-TCM)

Objective:This study aimed to develop a core outcome set(COS)for use in future studies of stable angina pectoris(SAP)in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).Methods:Systematic literature reviews and qualitative interviews with cardiologists and patients with SAP treated using TCM were conducted to generate a set of *** were prioritized by stakeholders via two rounds of an online Delphi survey and face-to-face consensus *** the final consensus meeting,a final COS was ***:An initial set of 324 outcomes was identified.A preliminary list of 65 outcomes was employed in the Delphi *** total,223 participants from seven stakeholder groups were invited to score outcomes in the first Delphi round:87 completed round 1 and 47 completed round ***-one participants attended the consensus meeting and agreed on a final core set of outcomes comprising six items across four domains:frequency of angina attack,duration of angina attack,Seattle angina questionnaire,total exercise duration in the exercise treadmill test,cardiovascular events,and QT interval on ***:The COS developed in this study provides the minimum requirements for measurement and reporting in future TCM clinical trials for the treatment of *** employment of this COS may reduce heterogeneity across trials and facilitate evidencebased decision-making for stakeholders.

Efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil in Asian men with erectile dysfunction

Aim： To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil, a phosphodiesterase type-5 （PDE-5） inhibitor, in men of Asian ethnicity with erectile dysfunction （ED）. Methods： In this prospective, double-blind, multinational study, Asian men were randomized to receive vardenafil （10 mg） or placebo （4：1 ratio） for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy variables were the International Index of Erectile Function erectile function domain （IIEF-EF）, and Sexual Encounter Profile （SEP） questions related to penetration and intercourse completion. Significant mean improvements were required in all three measures to show positive benefits of vardenafil treatment. Secondary efficacy variables included the Global Assessment Question （GAQ） on erection improvement. Results： Least-squares mean baseline IIEF-EF domain scores （vardenafil 14.6, placebo 13.4） were consistent with moderate ED. After 12 weeks, vardenafil treatment was associated with significant increases from the baseline in IIEF-EF domain scores compared with the placebo （22.4 vs. 14.3; P 〈 0.001）. Vardenafil was associated with significant improvements from baseline in least squares （LS） mean success rates for SEP-2 （vardenafil 82.2 vs. placebo 43.6; P 〈 0.001） and SEP-3 （vardenafil 66.1 vs. placebo 24.0; P 〈 0.001）. Positive GAQ responses were reported by 81.8% of vardenafil recipients vs. 24.3% of placebo recipients. Adverse events were reported by 25.4% of the vardenafil group, the majority mild and transient. Conclusion： Vardenafil （10 mg） is a highly effective and well-tolerated treatment for moderate ED in Asian men. These results add to the increasing amount of data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of vardenafil for the treatment of ED in a range of patient populations.

This paper presents a comprehensive study conducted to optimize the selective laser melting(SLM)parameters and subsequent heat-treatment temperatures for near-α high-temperature titanium alloy Ti-6 Al-2 Zr-1 Mo-1 V(TA15),which is widely used in the aerospace *** on the surface morphology and relative density analysis,the optimized process parameters were:laser power from 230 W to 380 W,scan speed from 675 mm/s to 800 mm/s,scan spacing of 0.12 mm,and layer thickness of0.03 *** effects of the laser power and the layer thickness on the phase constitutions,microstructure features,as well as room-temperature and high-temperature(500℃) tensile properties,were then studied to obtain an in-depth understanding of SLM-built *** typical temperatures(650,750,850,950,1000 and 1100℃) covering three representative temperature ranges,i.e.,martensite partial decomposition temperature range,martensite complete decomposition temperature range and above βtransus temperature,were subsequently selected as heat-treatment *** heat treatmentmicrostructure-mechanical property relationships of SLM-built TA15 were elucidated in *** results provide valuable information on the development of SLM-built TA15 alloy for industrial applications,and these findings are also beneficial to additive manufacturing of other near-α Ti alloys with desirable high-temperature properties.
