Unraveling the potential of 3D bioprinted immunomodulatory materials for regulating macrophage polarization:State-of-the-art in bone and associated tissue regeneration

Macrophage-assisted immunomodulation is an alternative strategy in tissue engineering, wherein the interplay between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory macrophage cells and body cells determines the fate of healing or inflammation. Although several reports have demonstrated that tissue regeneration depends on spatial and temporal regulation of the biophysical or biochemical microenvironment of the biomaterial, the underlying molecular mechanism behind immunomodulation is still under consideration for developing immunomodulatory scaffolds. Currently, most fabricated immunomodulatory platforms reported in the literature show regenerative capabilities of a particular tissue, for example, endogenous tissue (e.g., bone, muscle, heart, kidney, and lungs) or exogenous tissue (e.g., skin and eye). In this review, we briefly introduced the necessity of the 3D immunomodulatory scaffolds and nanomaterials, focusing on material properties and their interaction with macrophages for general readers. This review also provides a comprehensive summary of macrophage origin and taxonomy, their diverse functions, and various signal transduction pathways during biomaterial-macrophage interaction, which is particularly helpful for material scientists and clinicians for developing next-generation immunomodulatory scaffolds. From a clinical standpoint, we briefly discussed the role of 3D biomaterial scaffolds and/or nanomaterial composites for macrophage-assisted tissue engineering with a special focus on bone and associated tissues. Finally, a summary with expert opinion is presented to address the challenges and future necessity of 3D bioprinted immunomodulatory materials for tissue engineering.

OBJECTIVE:To systematically investigate the clinical effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese herbs(TCHs)as an alternative to conventional medicine(CM)in children with cough variant asthma(CVA).METHODS:Randomized controlled trial(RCT)studies that were published from their inceptions to March 31,2020,were identified from the electronic databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure,Wangfang,Pub Med,and Cochrane Central *** primary outcome of the review was the total effective rate(TER),and the secondary outcomes were immunoglobulin E(Ig E),peak expiratory flow(PEF),adverse drug reactions,and relapse rates of ***:For the Meta-analysis,13 studies involving 992 children with CVA were *** terms of TER and Ig E,the experimental interventions of TCH,when compared with the control interventions of CM,on pediatric CVA were found to be significantly effective(Phan those in the CM group(P=0.02 and P<0.0001,respectively).CONCLUSION:Compared with CM therapy,the effects of TCH therapy on pediatric CVA were significantly beneficial in terms of TER and Ig E,but not for PEF,and the methodological quality of included studies was ***,the results should be interpreted with *** randomized controlled trials with rigorous experimental methodologies are required for objectivity in the future.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White ***:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test *** skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize *** the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 *** other side of the skin was used as *** 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin *** the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of *** left eye was untreated and used as a ***,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt ***,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were *** degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation ***:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV *** 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not *** Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight *** EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV *** for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a ***:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.

Debris flows caused by heavy rainfall in mountain areas near expressways lead to severe social and economic losses and sometimes result in ***, the development of a real-time system for debris-flow hazard assessment is necessary to provide preliminary information for rapid decision making about evacuations or restoration measures, as well as to prevent secondary disasters caused by debris flows. Recently,various map-based approaches have been proposed using multi-attribute criteria and assessment methods for debrisflow susceptibilities. For the macrozonation of debris-flow hazard at a national scale, a simplified method such as the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) debris-flow hazard assessment method can be applied for systematic analysis based on geographic information systems(GIS) and monitoring networks. In this study, a GIS-based framework of real-time debris-flow hazard assessment for expressway sections is proposed based on the KEC debris-flow hazard assessment method. First, the KEC-based method was standardized in a systematic fashion using Arc GIS,enabling the objective and quantitative acquisition of various attribute datasets. The quantification of rainfall criteria also was considered. A safety management system for debris-flow hazard was developed based on the GIS platform. Finally, the method was applied and verified on three expressway sections in Korea. The grading standard for each individual influencing attribute was subsequently modified to more accurately assess the debris-flow hazards.

Objective:To examine the oral toxicity of repeated dosing of Strobilanthes crispus(***)ethanol leaves extract on the liver and kidney functions in Sprague Dawley ***:Young female rats aged between 8 and 12 week-old were randomly assigned into four groups with five animals each group(n=5).The first group served as control,while the second,third and fourth groups were orally treated with a single dose daily with 150 mg/kg,300 mg/kg,and600 mg/kg of *** ethanol leaves extract for 14 d ***-side observation was conducted for first 4h after each *** body weight changes,food consumptions and water intake were also *** biochemical parameters,i.e.,aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase,alkaline phosphatase,creatinine and urea were determined at *** results were expressed as mean±SD and analysed using Dunnett's ***:It was obtained that 14-day oral administration of *** ethanol leaves extract did not cause any adverse effects or lethality to the female Sprague Dawley rats,No significant changes in serum biochemical parameters,relative organs weights,body weights,food intake and water consumptions were observed between the treatment groups and ***:In conclusion,14-day oral administration of *** ethanol leaves extract was safe to be consumed in female rats without affecting the liver and kidney Functions.

This work reports the Au nanoparticles（NPs） deposited on TiO2nanotubes（NTs） which were successfully synthesized by a simple two-step anodization method. This fabrication process is notable for a simple and inexpensive method for obtaining pure TiO2NTs and Au NPs deposited TiO2NTs. The prepared samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope（FESEM）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）, and I-V curve. We found that the size of Au NPs can be controlled by changing the bias voltage during the deposition. The photodetectors of Au NPs/TiO2devices showed good wavelength selectivity with high photocurrent as compared to pure TiO2NTs devices. Subsequently, Au NPs deposited on TiO2NTs at bias voltage of 70 V was potentially used in fabrication of UV photodetector. At this applied voltage, a high density of Au NPs was uniformly deposited on TiO2NTs. As a result, it enables a high photocurrent and great responsivity in UV region. It is suggested that the Au NPs deposited TiO2NTs device shows good promise for UV photodetectors with possibility to fine-tune properties in both UV and visible regions and is worthy of further investigation.
