Precise evaluation of innerdiameter distribution of open carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is the basis of systematic investigation of physico-chemical processes occurring in nano-sized quasi-1-dimensional carbons. Due to the porosity characteristics and adsorption properties, this study evaluated the innerdiameter and its distribution of carbon nanotubes by analyses of nitrogen cryo-adsorption isotherms, and proved that the gas adsorption method is an effective method to characterize the inner cavity structure in comparison with that of electron microscopy observations and Raman measurements. The advantages of this method are as follows: Firstly, statistical information for innerdiameter distribution of open nanotubes can be obtained; Secondly, the method based on the adsorption process in inner cavities is of importance for investigation of other physico-chemical pro- cesses inside the cavities of carbon nanotubes. AIM： TO determine whether -1195 A→G and/or -765 G→C polymorphisms in Cyclooxygenase-2 CCOX-2） may have a risk modifying effect on the development of esophageal carcinoma in a Dutch Caucasian population. METHODS： Two study groups were recruited, 252 patients with esophageal carcinoma and 240 healthy controls, matched for race, age, gender and recruiting area. DNA was isolated from whole blood and used for genotyping. PCR products were digested with restriction enzymes and products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Odds ratios （OR） and 95% confidence intervals （CI） were estimated. RESULTS： The distribution of the -1195A→G polymorphism was significantly different in esophageal cancer patients compared to controls. The -1195 GG genotype resulted in a higher risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma （OR = 3.85, 95% CI： 1.45-10.3） compared with the -1195AA genotype as a reference. The -765 G→C genotype distribution was not different between the two groups. The GG/ GG haplotype was present more often in esophageal adenocarcinoma patients than in controls （OR = 3.45, 95% CI： 1.24-9.58; with AG/AG as a reference）. The same trends were observed in patients with squamous cell carcinomas, however, the results did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION： Presence of the COX-2 -1195 GG genotype and of the GG/GG haplotype may result in a higher risk of developing esophageal carcinoma.

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is characterized by the presence of multiple bile duct-derived epithelial cysts scattered in the liver parenchyma. PLD can manifest itself in patients with severe autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Isolated autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease (ADPLD) is genetically distinct from PLD associated with ADPKD, although it may have similar pathogenesis and clinical ***, mutations in two causative genes for ADPLD,independently from ADPKD, have been identified. We report here a family (a mother and her daughter) with a severe form of ADPLD not associated with ADPKD produced by a novel missense protein kinase C substrate 80K-H (PRKCSH) mutation (R281W). This mutation causes a severe phenotype, since the two affected subjects manifested signs of portal hypertension. Doppler sonography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are effective in documenting the underlying lesions in a non-invasive way.

A field trial was conducted to evaluate the role of boron （B） application at different growth stages in improving the growth,yield and net economic return of rice at farmer＇s fields during summer season,*** was soil applied （1.5 kg/hm2） at the transplanting,tillering,flowering and grain formation stages of rice;foliar applied （1.5% B solution） at the tillering,flowering and grain formation stages of rice,and dipped seedling roots in 1.5% B solution before transplanting;while control plots did not apply any *** application （except dipping of seedling roots in B solution,which caused toxicity and reduced the number of tillers and straw yield than control） substantially improved the rice growth and ***,soil application was better in improving the number of grains per panicle,1000-grain weight,grain yield,harvest index,net economic income and ratio of benefit to cost compared with the rest of ***,for improving rice performance and maximizing the net economic returns,B might be applied as soil application at flowering.

MOST previous studies of organic geochemistry in an ore deposit focus on the bitumen and kero-gen associated with ores and host rocks, not on that of fluid inclusions. However, organicmatter only in ore-forming fluids is directly involved in metallogenesis. In this note, a series ofbiomarkers in hydrocarbon inclusions were identified through gas chromatography-mass spec-trometry (GC-MS). Comparison and contrast on extractable organic matter (EOM) was madeamong inclusions, ores and host rocks. Metallogenesis related to EOM was also discussed.

AIM： Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 （PTGS2 or COX2） is one of the key factors in the cellular response to inflammation. PTGS2 is expressed in the affected intestinal segments of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases （IBD）. In IBD patients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which have been shown to reduce both the production and activity of PTGS2, may activate IBD and aggravate the symptoms. We aimed at examining genetic variants of PTGS2 that may be risk factors for IBD. METHODS： We genotyped 291 individuals diagnosed with IBD and 367 controls from the Dutch population for the five most frequent polymorphisms of the PTG52 gene. Clinical data were collected on all patients. DNA was extracted via normal laboratory methods. Genotyping was carried out using multiplex PCR followed by the Invader Assay and the 5＇ exonuclease assay （TaqMan）. New polymorphism screening was performed by pre-screening with denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography, followed by fluorescent sequencing. RESULTS： Allele 5209G was weakly associated with Crohn＇s disease （odds ratio [OR] 1.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-2.57）, and allele 8473T with ulcerativecolitis （OR 1.50, 95%CI 1.00-2.27）. The haplotype including both alleles showed a strong association with IBD （OR 13.15, 95%CI 3.17-116.15）. This haplotype, while rare （-0.3%） in the general population, is found more frequently in patients （3.5%）. CONCLUSION： Our data suggest that this haplotype of PTGS2 contributes to the susceptibility of IBD.

AIM： To detect the new serum biomarkers for colorectal cancer （CRC） by serum protein profiling with surfaceenhanced laser desorption ionisation - time of flight mass spectrometry （SELDI-TOF MS）. METHODS： Two independent serum sample sets were analysed separately with the ProteinChip technology （set A： 40 CRC ＋ 49 healthy controls; set B： 37 CRC ＋ 31 healthy controls）, using chips with a weak cation exchange moiety and buffer pH 5. Discriminative power of differentially expressed proteins was assessed with a classification tree algorithm. Sensitivities and specificities of the generated classification trees were obtained by blindly applying data from set A to the generated trees from set B and vice versa. CRC serum protein profiles were also compared with those from breast, ovarian, prostate, and non-small cell lung cancer. RESULTS： Mass-to-charge ratios （m/z） 3.1×10^3, 3.3× 10^3, 4.5×10^3, 6.6×10^3 and 28×10^3 were used as classitiers in the best-performing classification trees. Tree sensitivities and specificities were between 65% and 90%.Host of these discriminative m/z values were also different in the other tumour types investigated. M/z 3.3× 10^3, main classifier in most trees, was a doubly charged form of the 6.6× 10^3-Da protein. The latter was identified as apolipoprotein C-I. M/z 3.1×10^3 was identified as an N-terminal fragment of albumin, and m/z 28× 10^3 as apolipoprotein A-I. CONCLUSION： SELDI-TOF MS followed by classification tree pattern analysis is a suitable technique for finding new serum markers for CRC. Biomarkers can be identified and reproducibly detected in independent sample sets with high sensitivities and specificities. Although not specific for CRC, these biomarkers have a potential role in disease and treatment monitoring.
