A number of species （organic and inorganic） in airborne particulates cause the toxicity to living being. The potential of in vitro test methods were explored for toxicity assessment of trace toxic elements （inorganic species） present in ambient air on human being （lungs）. A year long sampling of airborne particles （PM2.5） was carded （April 2008 to March 2009） in Lahore, Pakistan. A total of thirty nine samples were collected on 47 mm Zefiuor Teflon filter membranes and each was analysed to characterize for the elements： Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Co, Pb, Mn, Hg using ICP-MS in water extract and total acid digestate. The samples cytotoxicity was also established using lung derived cells and MTS colorimetric assays. This generated dose response curves and IC50 values for the elemental mixtures identified on the Teflon filter membrane. The results indicated that even at low concentrations airborne elemental mixtures displayed an additive toxic effect.

The feedstock based on the binder 65%PW-30%EVA-5%SA has the best general rheological properties for the 17-4PH stainless steel powder. The 17-4PH stainless steel compacts sintered at 1 380 ℃ for 90 min have the best mechanical properties and the good microstructure with homogeneously distributed pore structure and the moderate-sized grains. Whereas the compacts sintered for 60 min and 120 min show an inadequate and an over-sintered microstructure respectively. The compacts sintered at 1380 ℃ for 90 min have the density of 7.70 g/cm^3, the strength of 1 275 MPa, the elongation of 5%, and hardness of HRC36. With the increase of sintering temperature, the density, strength and hardness increase, while the elongation decreases. The 17-4PH stainless steel has good corrosion resistance, showing an activation-passivation polarization curve. But the passivation potential range is narrow and the spot corrosion potential is low, indicating a low anti-spot corrosive properties.

Simulation-based environmental-impact assessment of glycerol-to-hydrogen conversion technologies

This simulation-based comparative assessment aims to quantify the environmental and human-health impacts of greener hydrogen(H2)production via three glycerol-based technologies,including:supercritical water reforming(SCWR),aqueous-phase reforming(APR)and autothermal reforming(ATR).The GaBi(2018 edition)life-cycle assessment(LCA)platform is used to develop cradle-to-gate product system models for these technologies and the TRACI 2.1 methodology is used to quantify their midpoint impact *** HYSYS(v11)process-simulation software is used to generate the life-cycle inventory(LCI)primary data required to produce 1 kg of H2 via each of the indicated glycerol-reforming *** ISO 14040:2006 reporting requirements for the LCA results interpretation step,three base case(BC)scenarios and four sensitivity scenarios(SS)are developed and quantified to compare the effects of different process electricity sources(US grid mix versus wind power)and thermal energy sources(natural gas versus biogas)on the LCA *** high operating pressure(viz.240 bar)of SCWR enabled assessment of the impact of in situ electricity generation to offset some of electricity required for this *** major insights from this research are as follows:(i)per 1 kg of produced H2,APR reduces CO_(2) emissions by≈95%compared to ATR and by≈92%compared to SCWR,(ii)for BC scenarios,the primary energy consumption(in MJ/kg of produced H2)is in the following order from highest to lowest:ATR>SCWR>APR and(iii)H2 production via glycerol APR is more environmentally sustainable than SCWR and ATR,and thus offers a promising path for greener H2 *** environmental sustainability studies should focus on expanding the scope of this study to include H2 production via water electrolysis using renewable electricity sources and via solar and nuclear-driven thermochemical water splitting.

A Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface(RIS)panel comprises many independent Reflective Elements(REs).One possible way to implement an RIS is to use a binary passive load impedance connected to an antenna element to achieve the modulation of reflected radio *** RE reflects incoming waves(incident signal)by using on/off modulation between two passive loads and adjusting its phase using a Phase Shifter(PS).However,this modulation process reduces the amplitude of the reflected output signal to less than ***,recent RIS works have employed Reflection Amplifiers(RAs)to compensate for the losses incurred during the modulation ***,these systems only improve the reflection coefficient for a single modulation state,resulting in suboptimal RE ***,this paper proposes a strategy for optimising RE by continuously activating the RA regardless of the switching load *** performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in two scenarios:(1)In the first scenario(Sc1),the RA only operates to compensate for high-impedance loads,and(2)in the second scenario(Sc2),the RA runs continuously regardless of the RE *** benchmark the performance of Sc1 and Sc2,various metrics are compared,including signal-to-noise ratio,insertion loss,noise figure,communication range,and power-added *** examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** is found that the proposed system in Sc2 leads to better overall performance compared to Sc1 due to the increased gain of the RIS reflection.

Six new thermally stable polyesters （4a-f） were synthesized through the solution polycondensation reaction of 2,5-pyridine dicarbonyldichloride （2） with six aromatic diols in N,N＇-dimethyl acetamide （DMAc） solution and in the presence of pyridine as a base. The polycondensation reactions produce a series of new polyesters （4a-f） in high yields, and inherent viscosity between 0.30 and 0.55 dL/g. The resulting polyesters were characterized by elemental analysis, viscosity measurements, thermal gravimetric analysis （TGA and DTG）, solubility test, Fourier transform infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography （GPC）.
