Standard method design considerations for semi-quantification of total naphthenic acids in oil sands process affected water by mass spectrometry： A review

Naphthenic acids are a complex class of thousands of naturally occurring aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids found in oil sands bitumen and in the wastewater generated from bitumen processing. dozens of analytical methods have been developed for the semiquantification of total naphthenic acids in water samples. However, different methods can give different results, prompting investigation into the comparability of the many methods. A review of important methodological features for analyzing total naphthenic acids is presented and informs the design of future standard methods for the semi- quantification of total naphthenic acids using mass spectrometry. The design considerations presented are a synthesis of discussions from an Environment and Climate Change Canada （ECCC） led taskforce of 10 laboratory experts from government, industry and academia during April 2016 and subsequent discussions between University of British Columbia and ECCC representatives. Matters considered are： extraction method, solvent, pH, and temperature; analysis instrumentation and resolution; choice of calibration standards; use of surrogate and internal standards; and use of online or offline separation prior to analysis. The design considerations are amenable to both time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

EXISTENCE ANd STABILITY OF VISCOUS SHOCK PROFILES FOR 2-d ISENTROPIC MHd WITH INFINITE ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY

For the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics （MHd） with γ-law gas equation of state, γ≥ 1, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave OdE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompressive, or undercompressive shock profiles. Considered as three-dimensional solutions, undercompressive shocks axe Lax-type （Alfven） waves. For the monatomic and diatomic cases γ= 5/3 and γ=7/5, with standard viscosity ratio for a nonmagnetic gas, we find numerically that the the nodes are connected by a family of overcompressive profiles bounded by Lax profiles connecting saddles to nodes, with no undercompressive shocks occurring. We carry out a systematic numerical Evans function analysis indicating that all of these two-dimensional shock pro- files are linearly and nonlinearly stable, both with respect to two- and three-dimensional perturbations. For the same gas constants, but different viscosity ratios, we investigate also cases for which undercompressive shocks appear; these are seen numerically to be stable as well, both with respect to two-dimensional and （in the neutral sense of convergence to nearby Riemann solutions） three-dimensional perturbations.

Role of microbial dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of esophageal mucosal disease:A paradigm shift from acid to bacteria?

Genomic sequencing,bioinformatics,and initial speciation(e.g.,relative abundance)of the commensal microbiome have revolutionized the way we think about the“human”body in health and *** interactions between the gut bacteria and the immune system of the host play a key role in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal diseases,including those impacting the *** relatively stable,there are a number of factors that may disrupt the delicate balance between the luminal esophageal microbiome(EM)and the *** changes are thought to be a product of age,diet,antibiotic and other medication use,oral hygiene,smoking,and/or expression of antibiotic products(bacteriocins)by other *** effects may lead to persistent dysbiosis which in turn increases the risk of local inflammation,systemic inflammation,and ultimately disease *** has suggested that the etiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease-related esophagitis includes a cytokine-mediated inflammatory component and is,therefore,not merely the result of esophageal mucosal exposure to corrosives(i.e.,acid).Emerging evidence also suggests that the EM plays a major role in the pathogenesis of disease by inciting an immunogenic response which ultimately propagates the inflammatory ***,we discuss the potential role for manipulating the EM as a therapeutic option for treating the root cause of various esophageal disease rather than just providing symptomatic relief(i.e.,acid suppression).

Trichomerium is a genus of foliar epiphytes with the appearance of sooty moulds,mostly occurring on the surface of living leaves and apparently gaining their nutrients from insect *** have ascostromata with setae and develop on a loosely interwoven mycelial mass of dark brown hyphae,while asci have a bitunicate appearance with hyaline *** this study,we made 16 collections of Trichomerium from *** were isolated,and the LSU and ITS rdNA gene regions *** analysis indicated that the Trichomerium species form a monophyletic clade within Chaetothyriales and warrant the introduction of a new family *** support for the Chaetothyriales is 100%and clearly separates Trichomeriaceae from Capnodiales which are morphologically very similar.A detailed account of Trichomerium is provided and we describe and illustrate three new species based on morphological and molecular *** propose that *** is adopted as the generic type of Trichomerium because it has been impossible to obtain the holotype specimen of *** and also no molecular data exists in worldwide databases for this species or genus.

The role of RAd9 in tumorigenesis

RAd9 regulates multiple cellular processes that influence genomic integrity,and for at least some of its functions the protein acts as part of a heterotrimeric complex bound to HUS1 and RAd1 ***9 participates in dNA repair,including base excision repair,homologous recombination repair and mismatch repair,multiple cell cycle phase checkpoints and *** addition,functions including the transactivation of downstream target genes,immunoglobulin class switch recombination,as well as 3′–5′exonuclease activity have been *** RAd9 expression has been linked to breast,lung,thyroid,skin and prostate tumorigenesis,and a cause–effect relationship has been demonstrated for the latter ***,human RAd9 overproduction correlates with prostate cancer whereas deletion of Mrad9,the corresponding mouse gene,in keratinocytes leads to skin *** results reveal that RAd9 protein can function as an oncogene or tumor suppressor,and aberrantly high or low levels can have deleterious health *** is not clear which of the many functions of RAd9 is critical for carcinogenesis,but several alternatives are considered herein and implications for the development of novel cancer therapies based on these findings are examined.
