Does a shift in shade tolerance as suggested by seedling morphology explain differences in regeneration success of northern red oak in native and introduced ranges?

Across North America, forests dominated by Quercus rubra L. (northern red oak), a moderately shade-tolerant tree species, are undergoing successional replacement by shade-tolerant competitors. Under closed canopies, Q. rubra seedlings are unable to compete with these shade-tolerant species and do not recruit to upper forest strata. In Europe, natural regeneration of introduced Q. rubra is often successful despite the absence of fire, which promotes regeneration in the native range. Considering that understorey light availability is a major factor affecting recruitment of seedlings, we hypothesized that Q. rubra seedlings are more shade tolerant in the introduced range than in the native range. Morphological traits and biomass allocation patterns of seedlings indicative of shade tolerance were compared for Q. rubra and three co-occurring native species in two closed-canopy forests in the native range (Ontario, Canada) and introduced range (Baden-Württemburg, Germany). In the native range, Q. rubra allocated a greater proportion of biomass to roots, while in the introduced range, growth and allocation patterns favored the development of leaves. Q. rubra seedlings had greater annual increases in height, diameter and biomass in the introduced range. Q. rubra seedlings in the introduced range were also younger;however, they had a mean area per leaf and a total leaf area per seedling that were five times greater than seedlings in the native range. Such differences in morphological traits and allocation patterns support the hypothesis that Q. rubra expresses greater shade tolerance in the introduced range, and that natural regeneration of Q. rubra is not as limited by shade as in the native range. The ability of Q. rubra seedlings to grow faster under closed canopies in Europe may explain the discrepancy in regeneration success of this species in native and introduced ranges. Accelerated intermetallic phase amorphization in a Mg-based high-entropy alloy powder

We describe a novel mechanism for the synthesis of a stable high-entropy alloy powder from an otherwise immiscible Mg-Ti rich metallic mixture by employing high-energy mechanical *** presented methodology expedites the synthesis of amorphous alloy powder by strategically injecting entropic disorder through the inclusion of multi-principal elements in the alloy *** from first principles and materials theory corroborate the results from microscopic characterizations that reveal a transition of the amorphous phase from a precursor intermetallic *** transformation,characterized by the emergence of antisite disorder,lattice expansion,and the presence of nanograin boundaries,signifies a departure from the precursor intermetallic ***,this phase transformation is accelerated by the presence of multiple principal elements that induce severe lattice distortion and a higher configurational *** atomic size mismatch of the dissimilar elements present in the alloy produces a stable amorphous phase that resists reverting to an ordered lattice even on annealing.

Effect of Long-Term Soil Management on the Mutual Interaction Among Soil Organic Matter, Microbial Activity and Aggregate Stability in a Vineyard

Vineyard management practices to enhance soil conservation principally focus on increasing carbon(C)input,whereas mitigating impacts of disturbance through reduced tillage has been rarely ***,information is lacking on the effects of soil management practices adopted in the under-vine zone on soil *** this work,we evaluated the long-term effects(22 years)of alley with a sown cover crop and no-tillage(S+NT),alley with a sown cover crop and tillage(S+T),and under-vine zone with no vegetation and tillage(UV)on soil organic matter(SOM),microbial activity,aggregate stability,and their mutual interactions in a California vineyard in *** biomass,microbial biomass and activity,organic C and nitrogen(N)pools,and SOM size fractionation and aggregate stability were *** characteristics only partially reflected the differences in vegetation biomass *** C and N pools and microbial biomass/activity in S+NT were higher than those in S+T,while the values in UV were intermediate between the other two ***,S+NT also exhibited higher particulate organic matter C in *** differences were found in POM C between S+T and UV,but the POM fraction in S+T was characterized by fresher *** stability was decreased in the order:S+NT>UV>S+***,even if shallow and performed infrequently,had a negative effect on organic C and N pools and aggregate ***,the combination of a sown cover crop and reduced tillage still limited SOM accumulation and reduced aggregate stability in the surface soil layer of vineyards,suggesting relatively lower resistance of soils to erosion compared to no-till systems.

Tai Ji Quan for the aging cancer survivor: Mitigating the accelerated development of disability, falls, and cardiovascular disease from cancer treatment

Currently there are more than 13.7 million cancer survivors living in the U.S., and that figure is projected to increase by 31% in the next decade, adding another 4 million cancer survivors into the healthcare system. Cancer is largely a disease of aging, and the aging of the population will sharply raise the proportion of older cancer survivors, many of whom will be long-term survivors (5+ years post diagnosis). This review will address the potential utility of exercise to address three health problems that are of particular concern for the aging cancer survivor and the healthcare system, i.e., disability, falls, and cardiovascular disease, because the development of these age-related problems may be accelerated by cancer treatment. While there are many different modes of exercise that each produce specific adaptations, Tai Ji Quan may be a particularly suitable strategy to mitigate the development of age- and cancer-treatment-related problems. Based on studies in older adults without cancer, Tai Ji Quan produces musculoskeletal and cardiometabolic adaptations and is more easily performed by older adults due to its low energy cost and slower movement patterns. Since cancer survivors are mostly older, inactive, and often physically limited by the lingering side effects of treatment, they need to engage in safe, practical, and effective modes of exercise. The dearth of published controlled trials examining the efficacy of Tai Ji Quan to mitigate cancer-treatment-related musculoskeletal and cardiovascular side effects points to ample research opportunities to explore the application of this non-Western exercise modality to improve long-term outcomes for aging cancer survivors.

An open-access endoscopy screen correctly and safely identifies patients for conscious sedation

Background and aims:Open-access scheduling is highly utilized for facilitating generally low-risk *** screening addresses sedation requirements;however,procedural safety may be compromised if screening is *** sought to determine the reliability of our open-access scheduling system for appropriate use of conscious ***:We prospectively and consecutively enrolled outpatient procedures booked at an academic center by open-access using screening after in-office gastroenterology(GI)*** collected the cases inappropriately booked for conscious sedation and compared the characteristics for significant ***:A total of 8063 outpatients were scheduled for procedures with conscious sedation,and 5959 were booked with *** 78 patients(0.97%,78/8063)were identified as subsequently needing anesthesiologist-assisted sedation;44(56.4%,44/78)were booked through open-access,of which chronic opioid(47.7%,21/44)or benzodiazepine use(34.1%,15/44)were the most common reasons for needing anesthesiologist-assisted *** on chronic benzodiazepines required more midazolam than those not on chronic benzodiazepines(P=0.03)of those patients who underwent conscious ***,patients with chronic opioid use required more fentanyl than those without chronic opioid use(P=0.04).Advanced liver disease and alcohol use were common reasons for patients being booked after in-office consultation and were significantly higher than those booked with open-access(both P<0.01).Conclusions:We observed that the majority of patients can be triaged for conscious sedation using a multi-tiered screening ***,few patients(<1.0%)were inappropriately booked for conscious *** most common reasons for considering anesthesiologist-assisted sedation were chronic opioid,benzodiazepine and/or alcohol use and advanced liver *** suggests that these entities could be included in screening proces
